When did you put DC in a cot bed?

DD is 15 months and stays at my mum’s house twice/three times a week. She’s currently in a travel cot but is almost too big for it as she’s quite small. My mum’s said she wants to get a cot bed for her but is she not too young?

I said to my mum I’ll have a look to see if I can see a bigger travel cot but they do tend to be similar sizes. DD still loves to roll over and bang into the bars at her cot at home and couldn’t imagine turning it into a bed just yet. Does anyone have any recommendations for what I can put her in at my mum’s house or is it not too young to try a cot bed?

For at your mums, I suggest just buying a regular single size mattress for now, and using on the floor. Then buy a single bed frame in 6-12 months to add to it. Can get a single bed then with storage drawers maybe underneath for her to store spare clothes and toys for him

My then 18 month old was a climber so went straight from a cot to a bed with a duvet on the floor beside them. For some reason that also cured their night time waking.

My oldest was about 22 months when she moved into a bed and my middle child was 14 months because he would not sleep in a cot at all. He climbed to sister's bed for a nap one day and actually slept, was the first time he'd napped for more than ten minutes so we got him a matching bed.

Mine were in a single bed with a roll out bar by 2 years old.

If your mum wants to deal with a wandering toddler then leave her to it i say 😂

i kept DD in a cot as long as possible, and then when she was in the cot bed we put a stair gate on her door to keep her in her room at night. I would say get a cot bed for your muma, you can get some cheap ones, as presume your mum can then use the small travel cot for the youngest when needed? Can your mum not help with the cost?

DS went into a standard single bed at 20 months. It lasted until he was 10 years old.

Middle child started climbing out of their cot at about 15 months .They went into a double bed and shared with sibling.DC1 came out of cot at 21 months to free it up for DC2 and moved into the double bed.I don't think there is a need for special toddler beds ; they sound like yet another marketing ploy to part parents from cash. I can see sense in mattress on floor because they do occasionally fall out and the mattress can continue to be used on normal bed when it is purchased.

15 months is a bit young for a bed. My ds stayed in a cot until he was 2½ years old.

P.s.a cot bed is a cot that converts to a toddler bed. Do you mean a cot or do you mean a bed?

Ds was in a floor bed from 14 months. Couldn't get him back into the cot at night and was cosleeping with him anyway. Started the night on his own then I joined him. Rarely fell out. Normal height single bed from about 2.5 years

Ds has never got out of bed and wandered around from 15 mo up to now 5 years. Not all children do. If he wakes up, he calls for us, including 'mummy is it morning yet '. So don't assume all children will behave as yours did

Then maybe don't assume all children will behave as yours did!

I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing thatvif DD did decide to wander at that age she could get into mischief or trouble in other rooms in the house while we slept

Caspianberg · 16/08/2022 06:13

If they are climbers though you have no choice. If they can climb easily out of cot and over gates, open bedroom doors then you have to just accept it’s a pain and they can wander. You can’t physically tie them down or lock them in.
Da found it novelty a day or so, now just wanders into our room when he wakes, which is far better than screaming like he was being murdered which is what he used to do the second he woke when contained

jadedspark · 16/08/2022 07:51

You can get a barrier to put on the side so she doesn't roll out if that's your worry. Is your mums house reasonably baby proof if she gets up and decides to have a wander? Maybe offer to pay the difference between a toddler bed and a cot bed? They can't be that much more expensive.

Or if your mums ok with it, get her a baby gate that she can put on the room your DD sleeps in.

Hauck Travel Cot Set Sleep N Play Center / for Babys and Toddlers from Birth up to 15 kg / 120 x 60 cm / Changing Table / 2nd Level / Wheels / Side Hatch / Foldable / Transport Bag / Multicolor Black amzn.eu/d/eSGyepI

we have this travel cot and really rate it. We use it when we are away and because the side zips down my daughter enjoys playing in it as a “den” and putting her dolls to bed. I also think it could still be of use when she’s older and out a cot for away trips because she can get in and out it herself. It’s the same size as a normal cot so definitely big enough.
