Baby fruit pouches

mummy2903 · 10/08/2022 20:31

I have started giving my 4 month old fruity pouches and would like to know why some are for 4month plus and some for 7 month plus babies . If it is just pure fruit why would it be for different age range.

could i not just blend my own banana's and peaches for her ?

As others have said, weaning is advised by both the NHS and WHO from 6m onwards, unless told differently by your own medical team - eg with DS1 I was advised to try early weaning to help with his reflux, it didn't work AT ALL but was worth a try.

4m pouches are a purée - no lumps at all.
7m starts to be lumpier
10m even more
12m have full chunks.

As for why 4m is sold - the same reason they sell "follow on" formula - to make money. There is no need at all for a baby to move off stage one formula but all companies make it because they can then advertise it which they're not allowed to do with Stage one and can offer promotions on them to entice you to buy theirs.

I herd it has higher iron which would compliment her development

So your saying she can still have stage 1 for the whole 12 months ?

Yes

Yes. There is zero need for Follow On formula. Companies only make it because they're not allowed to advertise Stage One formula. It's purely a money-making racket. Your baby will get everything they need from Stage One formula until they're ready for cows milk.

Marketing is insidious.

Its just marketing messages to get you to buy some now and others at 7 months.

Thing is though pureed fruit is very, very low calorie but will fill up space in baby's tummy. That space is needed for high calorie, high nutrition formula or breast milk. You would really be better waiting till about 6 months to start on food.

Also baby's digestive system and kidneys are not developed enough for food yet and you are risking problems in later life.

Best to just give baby another bottle or some more breast milk just now and wait a few more weeks.

That's absolute rubbish. So years back when it was 3 months and then 4 months all them people have stomach problems now. No they don't. Stop being dramatic.

BanditBluey · 10/08/2022 22:46

Hi OP! Some people are harsh! I waited til 6 months for both my babies as that's the reccomended age. Formula or breast milk is full of nutrients and all a baby needs until then. I also kept them both on stage 1 until 12 months then went over to cows blue top milk. As someone else mentioned, stage 2 is pointless , it says on NHS website about both of these so maybe worth a look if you get chance :) the pouches should have a long date I'd you wanna save them for another couple of months

RooniIWazlib · 10/08/2022 22:48

You don't need follow on milk for iron. You get iron in food.

Bigchezemakeme · 10/08/2022 22:48

It's absolutely fine. When I had my daughter it was 3 months

oh hi @jammiewhammie65 have you heard of research progressing and informing scientific opinion? Rather than spouting ill advised opinion that goes against NHS advice perhaps just take 10 mins to look at the latest research that shows weaning pre-6 months leads to an increase in allergies and damage to the gut. I don’t give a shit what you do with your child but please don’t spout rubbish that could damage someone else’s child without a care in the world

Housenoob · 10/08/2022 22:48

The only difference between stage 1 and 2 is that stage 2 has a higher proportion of casein which is digested more slowly therefore potentially keeping baby fuller for longer. But there is absolutely no nutritional benefit in going on to stage 2.

The NHS website really is a good thing to read when it comes to things like this, makes it very clear. www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/types-of-formula/

mummy2903 · 10/08/2022 22:50

To be totally honest guys i j
Also listen to alot of my older family members who have seemed to raise perfectly healthy kids with lots of advice to pass down.

I understand there is lots of research now and midwifes have alot more donts rather than do's with a baby eg dont give water.

Im probably going to get lots of hate for this but in this uk 33'c weather we have had i could tell agter a few sips my baby was gasping for some plain water rather than milk. She was absaloutely fine and is fine

@jammiewhammie65 no all those people don’t have stomach problems. But a higher amount have than would have had waited till 6 months. It’s not that hard….if you don’t get it….I guess fine but stop advising others

sorry I didn’t realise you were a baby whisperer. You should have said. And perhaps phone Public Health England to tell them your child is different from all the rest and expunge your knowledge to the world. Ffs

Times move on. What was the norm then - isn't recommended now. Due to scientific research. Did you also drink and smoke during pregnancy?

I did not say that "all them people have stomach problems now" those are your words. I said that there was a risk of problems in later life. Quite different and factually accurate.

Early weaning is linked to an increased risk in digestive disorders. That does not mean everyone will get them. Most wont. OP

I am afraid the dramatics are on your part.

Housenoob · 10/08/2022 22:56

To be fair the NHS website does say formula fed babies may need a bit of water in hot weather so a bit of cooled boiled water is fine.

WingBingo · 10/08/2022 22:57

Well my gran smoked fags and gave me chocolate buttons whilst looking after me at 6 months. But I’m ok so hey, who cares?

just stick to the guidelines. Early weaning never goes down on mn for a reason.

If you listen to the adverts she'll be on formula through to preschool.

Honestly stage one to 12m and then transition to cows milk. She'll be having a balanced diet by then as well so getting everything she needs through food. Might take a bit longer to transition if she's sensitive to cows milk - some are, some aren't.

Remember food is fun until they're one - so 6m - 12m is about trying new flavours and textures.
Start with savoury - cooked veg, one at a time so you can see how she reacts to it. Build up slowly and restrict the sweet stuff so she doesn't bypass the savoury for sweet. Increase quantity at her pace and her milk will gradually come down.

There is nothing wrong with water for formula fed babies in hot weather. It is advised that its boiled and then cooled for under 6 months.

Thank you for everyones feedback.

I can see some of you all have different views on this.

But why would they sell these things in the shops then ? For a 4 month old ??

They sell lots of things for babies that aren't good/safe for them! Good being just one..

The main ingredients in Liga after wheat flour are sugar and glucose-fructose syrup yet you'd swear by the marketing they were the best things ever for kids!

Read the nutritional information really closely.

@Housenoob

I think you need to revisit that post of yours because that is EXACTLY what you said, it was quoted verbatim 😂

Noob you have got me mixed up with someone else or you don't know what the word 'verbatim' means.

@MajorCarolDanvers shit sorry I completely misread and thought I was quoting jammie, ignore me
