Would you put a 12 year old on her own in an Uber?

Our car has broken down and I need to get her to grans (20 min journey).

I am not sure DH thinks it's fine.

Would you do this?

Absolutely bloody no

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 29/07/2022 05:27

I wouldn't have an issue with this with my DD who is 12, but she probably wouldn't want to. If your child doesn't mind going on her own then I think it's fine.

Mumblechum0 · 29/07/2022 05:56

Only in an emergency and if she stayed on phone for whole 20 min trip

No I wouldn’t.

Not a chance in hell.
No way.

Uber requires you to be over 18 to have an account and under 18s to be accompanied by an adult.

I’d contact a local mini cab company and ask for a woman driver.

I would not put my 12 year old in a car with a stranger.

mum2bee2022 · 29/07/2022 06:04

Uber won’t take unaccompanied minors

MintJulia · 29/07/2022 06:13

No.I'd call a reputable cab company and ask if they have a female driver available.

Uber drivers can literally be anyone.

WinterMusings · 29/07/2022 06:13

Not in an Uber no.

In a booked Taxi, yes. With a photo of their taxi licence & their car reg. I'd book through an office & request one that's DBS checked (many are due to doing school runs).

JustJeans · 29/07/2022 06:13

Nope.

AegonT · 29/07/2022 11:55

No way to an Uber. Round here the council pays local registered taxi firms to take kids to and from the special schools. I don't know if the drivers they use have had any checks - they take kids of all ages, often just one kid and taxi driver per car. They are mostly male.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 29/07/2022 11:57

Not until hell freezes over.

karmakameleon · 29/07/2022 11:59

Nope but we have a local taxi company that takes unaccompanied children (mostly for school runs) and drivers are DBS checked. I would use them but not a normal taxi firm.

Maddogsandtoplessenglishmen · 29/07/2022 12:02

I would agree with finding your local taxi firm that either has a female driver or does the local school runs (preferably both)

The other option is do you have a neighbour you trust who would be willing to go with her if you paid for a taxi both ways, or who might even be willing to do a lift if you pay petrol money?

I am assuming this is for an emergency outside of your control and thats why one of you can't go in the taxi with her and come back?

Or could your gran get a taxi to you, pick up your child and get the same taxi back?

gogohmm · 29/07/2022 12:11

Yes but I'd use a local minicab firm who have dbs drivers (many have council contracts to get kids to school)

VimFuego101 · 29/07/2022 12:14

Uber, no. A local taxi company who has DBS checked drivers available for doing school runs etc - yes, if I knew they were reliable and trustworthy.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 29/07/2022 12:17

No I would pay for grandma to come and do a round trip with daughter. Not worth the risk

CuriousCatfish · 29/07/2022 12:27

Can you put her on a bus and grandma meets her the other end?

A lot of 12 year olds use public transport to get to school.

isntitapip · 29/07/2022 12:39

You can't put them in a taxi unaccompanied. Someone will have to do a round trip. Or send her on public transport as someone else suggested. But a minor needs a chaperone in a cab so it's not an option.

loulouljh · 29/07/2022 12:42

No.

orangeisthenewpuce · 29/07/2022 12:42

No but I'd put her in a local taxi firm car because I could have a conversation with office staff, explain situation and ask for a female driver. I never use Uber.

Imaginary · 29/07/2022 17:23

No.

I wouldn't do it at all. But Uber is the safest you instantly see a photo of the the driver and get the reg plate, car colour and a pic of the car also. You can track the journey on a map so if the driver veered off OP would see on her mobile at the present time.
Assuming all Ubers are registered and you can see a drivers rating and leave a review too.

I still would not though.

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 29/07/2022 17:33

Can her Gran come to you in an uber and collect her? Seems much less worrisome that way round.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 29/07/2022 17:38

Uber doesn’t allow unaccompanied minors.
