Parents of very tall children - do they slow down??

My daughter is 2.5 and I took her to the shoe shop today to get her feet measured and the staff assumed that she’s starting school in September! She’s already a size 8.

I'm just wondering if the growth slows down? She’s always been above the 99th centile. I worry that more will be expected of her because she looks older. She talks like an older child too but still has the emotional maturity of a 2 year old.

Mine 99th centile child slowed down at 12 when she was 5'7" at which point she stopped.

Pinkflipflop85 · 23/07/2022 14:15

My just turned 8 year old has outgrown the need for car seats (he's 139cm) and his toes are now touching the end of his size 4 shoes.

I'm bloody hoping he slows down soon!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/07/2022 14:18

We're both very tall but ds stayed tiny until he was 12 and then shot up over night and kept going...and going! Every 6 weeks he needed a new pair of shoes ,trainers and football boots as he grew half a size 😱

Snap for my 8yr old DD (birthday in May) 140cm tall, size 4 shoes and 10-11 clothing to prevent T-shirts looking like crop tops.

glitterfarts · 23/07/2022 14:20

My DD was on 99+% at birth and is 5foot 11, at 14. She's quite thin.
She was 5foot 9 at 11, so slowed down now. Her feet haven't grown since age 12.
At one time, in primary school, she was going up a clothes size every 3 months.

NickyNora · 23/07/2022 14:22

My dc are all on the 99th centile.

I have a Dd8 she is 5'1, 3 shoe. Ds14 is 5'10, 10 shoe.
Ds17 is 6'2, 11 shoe.
Dd 21 is 6ft, 7 shoe.

I'm 5'2 & wear a 3 shoe
Exdp is 6'4 & wears a 12.

They all just take after their dad.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 23/07/2022 14:23

My 2.5 yo daughter is the exact same size. I didn't think it was particularly big - she's tall too but on 75th percentile so not dramatically so.

My eldest on the other hand was around a UK9 at the same age, and on 99th percentile for height. Age 5 he is 122cm and a U.K. size 1. So at least in his case, no sign of slowing down!

With him, people definitely thought he was older. I remember getting some awful stares once when he had a tantrum in a store. Felt I had to say, he's only 2!

fluffyducky21 · 23/07/2022 14:24

My DD started shooting up in height at around 6yrs old.By the time she left primary school aged 11yrs she was just under 5ft 8.She is now in her 30s and is 1 inch taller than she was aged 11.

CrabbyCat · 23/07/2022 14:26

She may not stand out quite as much when she starts school - there are kids like DS who accelerate in growth since age 2. He was on about the 50th centile then, age 7 he is now above the 90th. My experience is that unfortunately you are right, and taller DC are assumed to be older and expected to act more mature. My middle DC was short for her age aged 2/3, and I used to get approving comments about how well behaved she was - when she was just older than they would have guessed based on her height!

Skelligsfeathers · 23/07/2022 14:26

My sin was on the 99.6th centile for ages them went above the curve. He is an adult now and 6'8 with size 14 feet

Hellocatshome · 23/07/2022 14:26

My DS1 was always very tall as a child he is now 6ft 2 with size 12 feet at 15. He has definitely slowed down though. Dont worry unless they have some sort of growth problem they won't just keep growing forever.

shoofly · 23/07/2022 14:27

DS1 was always on 99th centile was always tallest in class through primary school and although he has definitely slowed down (he's 16) he's now over 6ft. He doesn't look out of place amongst his peers anymore. Although there's a range of heights there's a few now are similar height.

Pinkflipflop85 · 23/07/2022 14:29

The expectations from others based on their height can be frustrating. My son attends a sports club and parents recently complained to the coach that they were allowing a much older boy to be part of the club (my son) - when actually he is in the age bracket for it! Even got accused of lying about his birthday by one parent🙄

shoofly · 23/07/2022 14:30

It is very hard when they're younger though. I remember a stroppy woman commenting that he should be in school when he was still in a buggy on a day out. He was only 2.5

This is true, DS used to have to take a copy if his passport to matches to prove his age.

underneaththeash · 23/07/2022 14:33

DS's feet finally stopped when he was 15 at a size 15. In reception he wore an adult size 6! He's not stopped growing yet though and is currently around 6'4. He's one of the tallest at school, but I don't think the tallest.

His first toddler shoes were a size 7

CantaloupeMelon · 23/07/2022 14:34

My tall children didn't slow down! DS1 is 6'3" at age 16, DD is 6' at age 14, DS2 is 5'6" at age 12.

Luckily they like being tall.

Well they will won't they, no one keeps growing forever. If your tall as a child you are likely to be tall as an adult. Thats just how it works.

😲 how rude of them @Pinkflipflop85 ! It’s none of their business.

Thank you for your responses, they’re very interesting. My other children are small. Dd4 definitely gets her height from her dad’s side. His two grown up children are 6ft 4 (ds) and 5ft 10 (dd).

I had to buy DS new trousers every term when he was at primary school. He slowed down a bit around 10/11 and his feet stopped growing at 11/12. He was taller than me in year 6, and I’m pretty tall.
he’s fully grown now at 6’5

I got comments about him begin too old for stuff when he wasn’t. Before he started school my MIL took him to the park and someone stopped to ask why he wasn’t in school. He was 3.

I also had a row with a dad at a sports thing who complained about him being too old based on his height. Even stranger as this dad was really tall as well, well over 6ft.

anon2022anon · 23/07/2022 14:44

Hello bigger children club 😁
My girl is 2.10, can wear age 5-6 clothes comfortably at about 107cm, and has been consistently above the top lines in the red book for both height and weight since birth. She's a shoe size 9. She's also a September baby, so will be one of the oldest in her class when she starts school in 2 years time.

My eldest was always the tallest girl in her class at school by far, until the end of year 7. By the end of year 8 she was one of the shorter ones, she had stopped growing and barely moved since then, at about 5"3 with size 5 feet

glamourousindierockandroll · 23/07/2022 14:45

I hope my son stays tall. He's just turned 5 and in age 7-8 clothes for the length. BMI is well within normal.

Interestingly, he was fast growing even during pregnancy: I knew my dates because we were actively trying but I was dated over a week ahead. He was then born at 37 weeks at 7lb10 but by my dates, he was really closer to 36.

I've got an odd fear that he's going to do all his growing early and then end up being a comparitively short adult, which might be hard to accept having been the big one all his childhood!

RandomMess · 23/07/2022 14:49

I am exceptionally short so when it was me out with very tall DC it did look odd/people assumed they were much older then their actual age.

HerculesMulligan · 23/07/2022 14:49

My DD was tiny at birth (I'd been ill) - too small at full term and until she was 4 months old to be tracked in the red book. She thrived (on aptamil, fwiw) and is now on the 99th centile at 2y11m. I took her to a 4th birthday party and she was as big as the other children there.

resipsa · 23/07/2022 14:51

DD1 is 11 (Yr 6) and 171cms with size 8 feet. She has always been off the growth charts. She's the tallest in her class. She likes it. No signs of slowing down yet...
DD2 is 6 (Yr 2) and 141cms so following the theme!
