Parents of very tall children - do they slow down??

My daughter is 2.5 and I took her to the shoe shop today to get her feet measured and the staff assumed that she’s starting school in September! She’s already a size 8.

I'm just wondering if the growth slows down? She’s always been above the 99th centile. I worry that more will be expected of her because she looks older. She talks like an older child too but still has the emotional maturity of a 2 year old.

All of my kids were off the charts in height, when babies/toddlers. All of my daughters slowed down in their tween years and are only about 5'4 now and have been for years, my son just keeps getting taller, he's about 6'1 at 15.

I hope so! My 3 year old is now handing his clothes and shoes "down" to his 6 year old cousin 😳

The problem we have is that he's in 5-6/6-7 for height, but 2-3 fits him nicely around the waist! Tempted to start putting him in dresses instead to save the falling down bottoms problem

My DH was a huge child and is now 6”8!
His height has allowed him to be great at sport and he had a career in pro sport. DS is 6 months & also long! My DH had terrible confidence issues when at school because of his height but in the end it’s a great advantage and he has such a presence now. I think it depends on the child as I was tall too but stopped growing about 14! X

DD was always one of the tallest in her year until she went to High School. I bought her a generously sized blazer in yr8 and she never grew into it! Her yr 7 blazer still fits and she's going into yr 11 in September 😁

Presumably you are female, in which case stopping growing about 14/16 is normal. Males can continue growing into their early 20s.

I'm 5'3 so my very tall ds who is 4 and about to start reception in September always gets shocked looks when people find out he is only 4 (he's even had adults almost argue with him in disbelief when they've asked him his age and he replies that he is 4)
we have had some comments in the past with people assuming he is much much older, which to me he has a younger face when you actually look etc so it's so bloody obvious he's not 7+
It's so frustrating as he is a lovely smart kind boy who is mature for his age but at the end of the day people still expect him to behave as if he is years older than he is!!
Interestingly if my DH (who is 6'6) is with us or they're just out together without me people obviously see the height of DH and tend to age DS correctly or at least closer to his actual age and don't expect as much from him. 🤷

My 8 year old has size 5 feet and is 4ft8 and in age 12 clothing! I hope she slows down soon 😂 feels like her clothes and shoes only last a few months

They don't slow down ( in my experience anyway!) but other kids eventually catch up.

DS was always too tall for centile charts so his height had to be roughly marked in the margin ( I was given a bigger chart eventually so I could track him more accurately)

He is 16 now and 6ft4 - still the tallest in his year group but he doesn't stand out as much as he used to.

I echo the expectations placed on tall kids. He was always expected to act older than he was. I got him out of a buggy early because I was fed up getting judgy comments.

We also used to have to fight to pay the lower ticket cost at attractions as he would automatically be charged the older child rate rather than the under 3 or under 5 rate. Before he was 16 he often had no choice but to pay adult price on the bus to school as even though he was only 13-14. Used to happen a lot and the bus driver would refuse to believe he wasn't 16. He either had to it full price or be late for school.

DH is 6ft5 so it wasn't entirely unexpected that my daughters would be tall.

Dd 13 is 5ft8 and still growing although her feet haven't grown in about 2 years, she's a 6 same as me.

12yo DD is almost my height (5 ft 6) and both feet and height still increasing.

abovedecknotbelow · 24/07/2022 09:09

Dds best mate was the tallest in the class by a long way in reception. End of y6 she's now one of the shortest in the class.

vdbfamily · 24/07/2022 09:15

I have 3 kids and oldest was off the scale when born and is now a 6'3" DD. She had not grown since age 14.
DS was 99 centile and is currently 6'5" with size 13 feet and still growing.
Youngest DD is 5'10" and size 10 feet. I think she may have stopped growing at 14.
I think it is relatively normal to follow your centile.
For reference, I am 6'1" and DH 6'7" so tall kids were always on the cards.
Our shortie daughter had lots of health issues from a small baby and I think that may have slowed her growth . 5'10 is a nice height for a tall girl though.
Shoes are biggest issue but ASOS go up to a 10 in fashionable shoes which are affordable and there are now plenty online shops but not many places you can go and try on.

My DD 10 is 5ft 3 and size 6 feet. Doesn’t appear to be slowing down and has always been the tallest in her class (even above the boys). She’s recently shot up an inch and a half, very quickly.

Her dad is 6ft 1, I’m 5ft 7 - I’m wondering whether she’ll end up at around 5ft 10?

She’s all legs and very willowy - ends up stooping a lot as all of her friends are generally a fair bit shorter than her

Remainiac · 24/07/2022 10:43

DS1 was head and shoulders above the other kids in his year from day one until he was around 13 when everyone caught up. He finished at a respectable and totally normal 6’1”.

Remainiac · 24/07/2022 10:46

And DGS2 is heading the same way as his father. He’s enormous (99th centile fir height and weight) but I have every confidence that he too will be caught by his peers in due course.
