Giving 7 month old pizza for tea

Riddlemethisplz · 16/07/2022 17:18

Tea time is approaching and dc1 has been asking for pizza. With solids for dc2 we’re pretty much giving him what we have as finger food and he’s doing really well. But pizza, is that ok?

for the record it’s not a takeaway pizza, will be shop bought pizza base with homemade sauce and toppings, probably no meat as we don’t have any in.

Im surprised people have such a downer on bread, since when did it become poisonous to give 7 month olds toast or squares of bread?

Maybe they’re more used to purées and mashed up baby food rather than finger food? My mum for instance was horrified I gave him a slice of steak to suck the juices out of at 6 months, perhaps a different way of thinking?

It seems more than that to me, but you might be right.

Unless its made of unicorn juice with angel kisses its too high in fat, sugar, salt and general poison.

Could be the perfect mum crowd too… they’d be horrified he loves a chip shop chip too (no salt of course), but babies need fat for their growth sooo

also juicing a unicorn…? Sounds awfully processed to me 😜

I vividly remember seeing someone I went to school with who I still have on Facebook giving their circa 8 month old baby a substantial portion of chicken chasni pizza from an Indian takeaway.. so your pizza sounds entirely nutritious in comparison 😂

Lovebeingamummy2 · 17/07/2022 08:18

@Beees general advice if researched about giving a baby pizza is if you really want to then you should wait until your baby is a year is it's too high in salt and fat and the tomato based sauce even made yourself can be very acidic for a babies tummy it's not really just bread it's lots of different components mixed together and babies generally can't handle it all at once when under a year also there isn't much nutritional value to pizza

So? Not every single thing has to be of optimum nutritional value

Lovebeingamummy2 · 17/07/2022 08:48

@MiniMoosey it doesn't have to be no but I also believe while I'm in control of what my baby is eating I like to give them things that offer an actual purpose rather than something that is bad for them and can upset their tummies at such a young age

BertieBotts · 17/07/2022 08:54

It's fine, they eat such miniscule quantities to begin with that whatever you give them even if it's drowning in salt is unlikely to be a problem. I used to look at the salt content for a full pizza (or whatever) and keep dividing it by two until I got to an estimate of the size of piece the baby would be having.

Don't wean them purely onto instant mash with Bisto and they'll be alright. You can also look at their salt intake over 2-3 days, they should have no more than 1g salt per day or 0.4g sodium, but it's OK for that to average out over a couple of days, it's not like a limit which if it is exceeded means damage will be caused. A consistently high in salt diet can cause problems but the occasional high salt meal is really not a problem at all.

SwitcH123 · 17/07/2022 08:59

Don’t be so ridiculous pizza is definitely not a good idea for a baby, they need simple plain foods that they can easily digest.

BertieBotts · 17/07/2022 09:03

Bread is higher in salt than you would expect, though. I seem to remember this from weaning DS1. A single slice of bread has 0.5g salt which is half of their daily allowance. But, at 7mo my babies wouldn't have managed an entire slice of bread, probably half.

Mrsmch123 · 17/07/2022 10:41

😂😂all the people triggered at the thought of a baby eating pizza😂the salt content will be minimal they literally take a few bites🤷🏻‍♀️
@SwitcH123 that's not true they can eat what we eat.
@Lovebeingamummy2 except pizza isn't bad on the odd occasion....it's all part of a balanced diet.
is crisps, chocolate off the menu too??

Lovebeingamummy2 · 17/07/2022 10:45

@Mrsmch123 yes crisps and chocolate is definitely off the menu at 7 MONTHS old!

SwitcH123 · 17/07/2022 11:07

Why would any sane parent offer there baby Crisps an Chocolate? They grow up quickly an have all the time in the world to eat rubbish. Why would you want to introduce junk food at the first opportunity. That’s my view on the subject. Feel free to disagree with me.

SwitcH123 · 17/07/2022 11:13

@Mrsmch123 babies can’t eat what ever we eat , they can with in reason. You wouldn’t give your baby Pepsi , or junk food. Babies need food that they can easily digest. It’s not rocket science to be honest.

Mrsmch123 · 17/07/2022 11:18

Why not tho a wee taste is hardly going to do them any harm🤷🏻‍♀️So does that make me insane because my one year old has tried a crisp and a bit of chocolate🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️They have all the time in the world to inhale car fumes but I don't keep them in a air purifier room. Surely it's about moderation🤷🏻‍♀️

Mrsmch123 · 17/07/2022 11:20

@SwitcH123 well they can. Not a sensible choice but a choice none the less. They wouldn't combust if they drank some Pepsi.

Riddlemethisplz · 17/07/2022 11:24

To the person that said pizza is too high in fat, no it’s not, babies need a lot of fat for growth and brain development.

salt yes, Bread is v high in salt m.

never heard that a tomato based sauce is too acidic, i somehow don’t think you’d be saying that if I was giving him pasta with a homemade tomato sauce

Definitely recommend Solid Starts/their app. It has basically every food, if it’s okay at certain ages, how to serve etc… It’s all written by certified Pediatric Dietitians and Doctors.

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 11:34

It also entirely depends on the bread.

SwitcH123 · 17/07/2022 11:44

@Mrsmch123 we are not in control of car fumes an yes if it’s literally just 1 crisp or a tiny bit of Chocolate it’s not going to upset tummies, you didn’t state what quantity just said I suppose Crisps an Chocolate are off the menu? Yes they are. At a year you could safely introduce pizza we were taking about a 7 month old baby

Beees · 17/07/2022 12:11

Pizza as described by the OP is absolutely fine for a 7 month old baby to have a taste of.

Shes hardly serving her kids reheated dominoes so I honestly don't get the fuss.

At 7 months mine had munched on catfood and a slug so a bit of tomato sauce and cheese on bread wouldn't be giving me pause for thought.

Lovebeingamummy2 · 17/07/2022 12:33

The op asked for opinions of wether to give her 7 month old pizza for tea she got given peoples opinions and some were for and some were against but it's all just that peoples opinions although I don't know why anyone needs approval of mumsnetters on what to feed their baby 🤷‍♀️ although it's highly unlikely anything bad would come of it, if you research the matter you'll find out about the subject and that it's generally not recommended to give it to babies under 1 for a whole host of reasons. Feed YOUR baby what you like at the end of the day your the parent not any of us and I'll feed MY babies as I see fit.

SwitcH123 · 17/07/2022 12:34

@Beees Sorry your baby munched on cat food, how did that happen ? It’s a matter of opinion I personally wouldn’t offer my baby pizza until about 3yo but they say after a year is safe to do. It’s what you feel comfortable with an why would the OP even ask the question an not be prepared for a difference in opinion

ihavenocats · 17/07/2022 12:36

I think to answer whether it's okay we need to understand your reason for the query. Is there something in the pizza you think could be dangerous?

EV117 · 17/07/2022 12:41

Bread, cheese, tomatoes and veg - why would that be a problem? No one bats an eye lid at someone eating a sandwich but for some reason pizza, with its extra veg, is the devil’s food. I don’t get it.
