22-month old - 10ml of Calpol

Please be kind, I feel terrible!

Gave DS two big spoons instead of 2 small spoons just before bed - so 10ml instead of 5ml.

DH has done all the maths (!) and reckons it's really not a big enough amount to worry about.

In our favour, another 6 weeks and he will be allowed 7.5ml as a 2-year old. Still though, he's been given the dosage for a 4 year-old...

Should I be worried? Anybody else done this? Grrrr.

Absolutely fine. Honestly, don't worry!

Beees · 14/07/2022 20:35

I think most people do this at some point. So you're in good company.

Just keep an eye on him but it's more than likely he will be 100% fine. He might be a little more drowsy but it won't actually be harmed by it.

presentandsometimescorrect · 14/07/2022 20:37

I've given my nearly 10 year old 10ml of six plus calpol and told the nurse at the hospital (she was being admitted for something else) and she mentioned her body may not be able to handle the extra 2.5 ml. If you're concerned ring 111.

We did this a few months back with DT1 who was the same age. I insisted DH took him to a&e….he was totally fine but they did refer us to the HV to check we aren’t shit parents.

Mandatorymongoose · 14/07/2022 20:47

Assuming your DC is about an average weight (around 11.5kg)then the dose you have given is about 22mg/kg.

Acutely toxic dose (that they would want to treat immediately) is about 150 - 200mg/kg.

You won't have done any harm, don't give another dose today so you stay under the total recommended amount in 24 hours.

Chichz · 14/07/2022 20:49

Eeek @Eek3under3 , they'd have a field day with me then - I had severe PND and psychosis! 🙈 Completely unrelated to this though - I've been discharged from the MH service over a year and just got distracted by DH, plus a toddler who loves Calpol!

I was trying to decide whether to give 2 small ones, or 1 big one, but did 2 big ones...

It sounds reassuring but I'll ring 111 to be sure.

Thanks all. X

@Mandatorymongoose thank you - pretty much what my DH did but we were working off closer to 15kg!

It sounds reassuring but I'll ring 111 to be sure.

Just be aware they will be pretty much garunteed to direct you to seek medical attention that's what 111 always do with small children.

I'd honestly let him sleep and just keep an eye on him.

Littlegoth · 14/07/2022 20:52

My 22 month old was given 9ml doses at the hospital. They based it on weight, which is 15kg (he’s a big boy!) and based on that he could have that dose 4 times daily.

you could seek advice from 111 if you are worried, but I’m not sure you need to panic yet x

Mandatorymongoose · 14/07/2022 20:52

Even better, I erred on the side of caution and used a lower average weight!

woody87 · 14/07/2022 20:54

Hello, I wouldn't stress about this. It's so easy to do. Your child is permitted to have 4 doses in 24 hours and this is only 2 doses. Just make sure you don't give anymore until tomorrow (if it's required) it's not ideal but one double dose won't cause any issues.

Chichz · 14/07/2022 20:58

Yes @Beees I know what you mean - we have had a couple of 111 calls before now!

A bit conflicted really. Just looked at the red book weight chart, as he's not been weighed in nearly a year and 15kg would put him on 98th centile, which I don't think he is. Perhaps he's around 13-13.5kg then...

Good to know that it is weight based though! I wondered if age would still play into it, as their kidneys etc aren't as well developed.

If it makes you feel any better DS is a tiny dot on about the 9th percentile and I've done it twice in his life and he's been fine despite his lack of weight.

Chichz · 14/07/2022 21:08

Thank you, @Beees. It does make me feel better, as did ringing my mum.

I think everything is so heightened with me when things like this happen, because of my history and just general anxiety - I cope well with life most of the time, but a small setback can really throw me off. It's all the more intense when related to DS!

I'll keep watching for now and decide before I go to bed...

Seems super sensible. It's stressful and absolutely normal to worry but he will be fine with his mum keeping a close eye on him although you probably won't sleep much tonight which is also totally normal, as is making the same mistake more than once despite all the worrying you did the first time. 😂

SoSo19 · 14/07/2022 21:19

I did the same with my 18 month old - gave the right dosage, forgot to tell her dad and he gave her another dose 15 minutes later!

We got her checked and the GP said it was fine as long as she stayed within the dosage limits for 24 hours, so no more given the next day for example.

PoTayToes80 · 14/07/2022 21:21

@Chichz I did this tonight! Gave my 5 month old 5 ml instead of 2.5 ml.

I spoke to my dad who is a retired gp and he did the calculation by my babiy’s weight and said it would be fine, just to not give him anymore during the next 24 hours. If you look online you can find the correct dosage per kg. Calpol is 120mg per 5 ml (I think - check the bottle)

Snowdropsarelovely · 14/07/2022 21:22

We did similar, I dosed my then 2 year old daughter, and then a bit later my husband did too! Lack of communication... I did take her to the walk-in centre who told me not to worry, but not to give any more within eight hours. The dosages on the bottles air on the side of caution, children in hosp are often given more based on weight. As a precaution though I would miss the next dose

Chichz · 14/07/2022 21:26

Thanks everyone. Really pleased to hear everyone was ok (children) and that I'm not the actual shittest of parents! 😜

Going to look for the weight chart now.

OP posts:
Bells3032 · 14/07/2022 21:27

The dosage max is actually for 24 hours. I was a bit anxious as when my daughter had her jabs she was only allowed 1.5ml due to her size and there was no marking in the syringe for that. Doc told it is was fine as we only gave three doses anyway and the reccomended dose was based on four a day so it was fine to go a bit over.

Just don't give him anymore in the next 24 hours.

Chichz · 14/07/2022 21:27

Not to suggest any of you are shitter! Totally get the lack of communication with DHs... Hehe.

OP posts:
TheHeartGoesLast · 14/07/2022 21:28

The NHS advice is if you give your child one extra dose, not to worry and just don't give them any more for 24 hours: www.nhs.uk/medicines/paracetamol-for-children/how-and-when-to-give-paracetamol-for-children/

So don't panic!

Choconuttolata · 14/07/2022 21:33

It will be fine, for post operative pain 20-30mg/kg is ok for 1 dose in that age range so long as you stick to the bottle dose from now on.

Chichz · 14/07/2022 21:37

Honestly, you've all been so kind 🙂 Was a bit loathe to post on here with the sorts of responses I sometimes see!

Weight chart would suggest a dose of 8-8.5ml for his estimated weight range and good to know about the doses over 24 hours - I wasn't intending to dose again anyway.

Sleep tight all, I will update tomorrow no doubt. X

ChloeHel · 14/07/2022 21:42

Pharmacist here, please do not worry! He will be fine. The maximum dose to give a child that age for pain is 20-30mg/kg for one dose. So given he is above 8kg then his body will eliminate it with no issues :)
