Chicken pox vaccine

Has any one had their baby/ toddler vaccinated against chicken pox? It’s not offered on the NHS but you can have it done privately. Offers the same immunity as if you have chicken pox in childhood. I just think it’s a good idea, no scratching, no pain, no upset, no surprise for when or if it happens. Just wondered if anyone had immunised their child from it?( but I guess excluding those who had to due to being immunosuppressed etc)

Yep! Got it done when DD was 1. No side effects and there have been a couple of CP outbreaks at nursery and she's never caught it.

PritiPatelsMaker · 29/06/2022 20:45

No but I really wish I had. DD had an awful case whilst we were on holiday. Poor little mite missed all of the activities that she's so desperately wanted to do.

welshweasel · 29/06/2022 20:47

Yes, had both mine vaccinated. Never understood why more people don’t do it.

Yes, DD was a few years ago. She’s 6 now.
It’s routine in the U.S and I don’t understand why we don’t do it here.
It can be disfiguring and if that can be avoided - then why not.

seven201 · 29/06/2022 20:49

Yes, I paid when my dd was about 2 I think. Pleased I did as CP has just torn through her year 1 class.

Ohtheaudacity · 29/06/2022 20:50

My eldest caught chicken pox three times (yes, really!) and I am absolutely not putting my youngest through the same. I’m getting him jabbed in 2 weeks time.

TheVillageBaker · 29/06/2022 20:53

I had my 3 DCs done in October and I'm so happy we made that choice. Chickenpox has gone around their schools and we've avoided the time off work, the pain and scars. Well worth the money.

SomePosters · 29/06/2022 20:53

No, i didn’t realise it wasn’t part of the childhood vaccination schedule until dd got it. Fortunately she had a run manageable with sudocreme and piriton.

My friend also did not realise that her child had not been vaccinated against it until she was in ICU with her. Sadly she didn’t go home with them.

I would 100% have had my dd vaccinated if I realised she’s wasn’t, luckily for us she wasn’t genetically predisposed to have a bad case.

We are so relaxed about childhood illnesses now, half an generation on from widespread vaccination it has been so effective that some people believe we don’t need it anymore!

FrodisCapering · 29/06/2022 20:54

We got both our children vaccinated as soon as possible.

Galaxyrippleforever · 29/06/2022 20:55

Got my dd vaccinated at 2. Really glad I did it.

Imohsotired · 29/06/2022 20:56

My two preschoolers had the first vaccine two weeks ago and they’re getting the second in a couple of weeks. They’ve had so many viruses lately I’m happy they can at least avoid chicken pox

AmbushedByCake · 29/06/2022 20:58

I didn't, and I've been very lucky because they both had incredibly mild doses, but if they hadn't had it I would get them vaccinated without hesitation. It has rampaged through DS's class at school, one child was hospitalised with full body sores and another ended up with a secondary bacterial skin infection and needed a skin graft. DS's best friend had spots on her genitals and wad in complete agony. Don't know if there's an unusually strong strain circulating but it seems to have been very very nasty.

Thursday37 · 29/06/2022 20:58

Yes we vaccinated just as DD started nursery at 13.5 months

RaceDayCrumbs · 29/06/2022 20:58

I’ve had my eldest and intend to get my baby done when he’s old enough.

He suffered no ill effects whatsoever from the vaccine. Definitely worth avoiding a week of misery.

Pudsocks · 29/06/2022 20:58

I've had both my children vaccinated, they've been exposed to chickenpox numerous times since and not caught it.
So many of my friends have had to reschedule holidays, miss weddings, miss job interviews, lose a week's pay etc because their kids got chickenpox at the worst possible time. Plus obviously I wanted to save my children from going through an unpleasant illness.

AmbushedByCake · 29/06/2022 21:00

There is some fairly sound reasoning on the NHS website for the vaccine not being part of the usual childhood schedule but it's about risk to the wider population in adulthood, not to the individual who has received the vaccine.

dnokeh · 29/06/2022 21:02

Yes mine are vaccinated, I paid for it at boots

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 29/06/2022 21:03

With DD1 we were advised not to because DH was immunosuppressed but then obviously she got CP. DD2 has been vaccinated against it.

MissConductUS · 29/06/2022 21:03

Both of mine had it with no problems. It's on the standard schedule in the US and many other countries.

PritiPatelsMaker · 29/06/2022 21:04

That's awful some Flowers

Abridget7 · 29/06/2022 21:04

Yes my ds has been vaccinated and my dd will be soon too.
I spoke to a paediatric consultant about it during a routine check up for my son (for an unrelated issue). They recommended it so took their advice.

Grissini50 · 29/06/2022 21:04

Yes, got DD vaccinated when she was 1 and she’s avoided several outbreaks of it at nursery and school now. So glad we did it, it can be nasty. Not to mention saving us a lot of inconvenience!

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 29/06/2022 21:06

Yes both of my children were vaccinated when they were around 12-18 months. Annoyingly my two both did catch it (post-covid rates have been astronomical!), but they had increeeedibly mild cases, I’m talking literally 5 or 6 spots on their tummies and nothing else. Our neighbours’ children are all recovering from bad bouts and their spots look so painful, I’m glad I could spare them the itching and scars.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 29/06/2022 21:06

Yep will have. No side effects at all

CheesePleaseLoueese · 29/06/2022 21:17

My DS (2) has had the first jab six months ago, and he is now awaiting his second jab.

Annoyingly, the pharmacy that offered it has now stopped offering private CP vaccination and I can't seem to find another one locally that offers CP vaccines.

Does anyone know the optimum gap between doses?
