MrsSnape · 15/01/2008 23:25

My (almost) 9 year old son wants to have his ear pierced. I think I might let him have it done for his 9th birthday.

Any advice on best place to take him and am I mad for letting him? anyone elses son have a pierced ear?

You're not mad for letting him, 9 is old enough to look after a new piercing (and also, at 9 he is old enough to choose to have it done). As to where to go, ask around for recommendations - some jewellers do it, some hairdressing salons, I think the likes of Claires Accessories do ear piercing (but a 9-year-old boy might find that a bit too girly).
My DS is only 3 so it's not arisen for us yet but if he wants it done when he's older I shan't object as long as I think he is old enough and sensible enough (ie at least 7 or 8)

I wouldn't, I think he is too young but if you want to I think most Jewellers do it.

He's noticed that all his favourite bands wear earings, bowling for soup, chemical romance...I also have an feeling he might be trying to impress a certain someone but I'll say no more on that subject lol

I'm still not 100%, if he did it wouldn't be gold jewelery...probably black knowing him so it won't look as chavvy...

I wouldn't worry about the 'looking chavvy'. Once DC are old enough to make choices about their appearance, it's no longer your business whether they want to look chavvy, emo, posh or nerdy. And the great thing with peircings is that, should you get older and decide they no longer suit the image you wish to present, you can just take them out, the hole heals and leaves a barely perceptinble scar. (OK, if you have gone in for stretching/extreme body mods the scars will be a bit more visible but no one is going to let a 9 year old do that).

too young

rite of passage when entering teens IMO

Twiglett · 16/01/2008 17:49

same rule for girls

calzone · 16/01/2008 17:53

ugh! sooooo common!!

and same rule for girls....should be older!

colditz · 16/01/2008 17:55

HELL nO.

colditz · 16/01/2008 17:56

There's time enough to be a moody teenager when he is a moody teenager, otherwise what will he do when he is a moody teenager?

smeeinit · 16/01/2008 17:58

both my ds's have/had their ears pierced. ds1 was 16 and got bored with it very quickly! ds2 was 14 and now has a 10mm tunnel in his ear!

your ds is obviously very keen to have it done so if you are happy with it then it doesnt matter what anybody else thinks........go for it!

claires accesories (sp?) is proberly the best place to go.

TheodoresMummy · 16/01/2008 17:58

I would let him.

Not a biggy, IMO.

If there's one thing I have learned it's Pick Your Battles.

TheodoresMummy · 16/01/2008 18:00

Go somewhere proper, NOT CLAIRE'S ACC !!!

Tattoo place ?

smeeinit · 16/01/2008 18:03

whats wrong with going to claires accesorys TheodoresMummy?
ds1 had his ear pierced at tattooists, was fine, good job although he soon got bored!
ds2 had his at claires acceseries which was also fine.

Wisteria · 16/01/2008 18:06

Nothing wrong with Claire's (other than the price ) but 9??

smeeinit · 16/01/2008 18:07

claires was cheaper than a tattoist for piercing..........

Wisteria · 16/01/2008 18:09

Probably is smee, but I was shocked when I found out how much it is now; apparently a normal high st jeweller is cheaper.

Elphaba · 16/01/2008 18:11

Oh God no. Over my dead body.

smeeinit · 16/01/2008 18:14

your right wisteria, and i would much rather go to a jewellers than tatooist or claires but nowhere does it anymore!

smeeinit · 16/01/2008 18:15

elphaba.....are you a wicked fan by any chance????!

It will look chavvy...and I wasn't the first to mention that word

Blandmum · 16/01/2008 18:19

I think that it looks horrible.

I would not allow either of my children dd or ds to have it done at that age.

But that is my view. He is your child. Your call.
