When could your daughter brush own hair?

Would love to know when other people's daughters have started brushing their own hair effectively, maybe with a reminder, and help if they are very tangly.
I'm writing a picture book on this and only have a 2 yo son. My book agent is questioning the age I assumed. Thank you so much!!

Hm. I had to do a very high ponytail for school when she was 10. But apart from that I feel I hadn’t gone near it for a couple of years.

adhdforme · 23/06/2022 09:49

My daughter is 4 and has incredibly long hair. She still cannot brush it, but I don't mind. Me doing her hair is something we can sit and do together while we have a chat about the day. Saying that I bet if she had a proper brush with a handle and not the tangle teaser we currently use she might be able to do a better job of it. She can do the length ok. It's just the top of the head she messed up and then it gets all knotted

Afolnerd · 23/06/2022 09:51

My 8 year old can start it but needs help finishing and tying it up. It is nearly down to her bum though.

Googling suggests 6-8.

Labdo · 23/06/2022 09:53

My 7 year old struggles but then so do I. Her hair is down to her bum and is incredibly thick. It’s like horses hair.

The2Omicronnies · 23/06/2022 09:53

Like @Afolnerd I have an 8 year old with very long hair. It gets quite knotty, so she’ll start it, but I’ll give it a given brush over and put it up for her. She can do plaits & ponytails, but she likes me to do it for her snd I enjoy doing it.

I always brush it after the shower as it’s super knotty.

Thevoiceofreasonable · 23/06/2022 09:54

I was about 8 or 9 before I actually thought to brush my own hair TBH.

That child in the picture looks older then 2 BTW.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/06/2022 09:55

Could do it effectively by 4. Did it willingly by 11/12 😁

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 23/06/2022 09:55

My daughter is 7 and has brushed herself for a while, I'd say she's done a good job for the last six months or so. Tying up - she sometimes does this herself. It looks like she's been dragged through a hedge. But she's very proud and thinks it looks lovely, refuses any assistance so god only knows what school think of my hair skills 😆

My son is 8 and has hair down to the middle of his back. He has a good try at brushing it but always needs help to get all the knots out.

motogirl · 23/06/2022 09:56

Around the age they went to junior school so 7

PinkyU · 23/06/2022 09:56

Depending on hair type I’d say close to 11/12 years, but I only have experience of type 1/2a hair types.

What is the ethnicity of your character and what hair type does she have?

SomePosters · 23/06/2022 09:56

Age 5 when she got a pixie cut

utter bliss!

fiorentina · 23/06/2022 09:56

4 or 5 but she has very straight shiny hair so it isn’t that tangled.

RandomQuest · 23/06/2022 09:57

My 5YO tries but her hair is waist length, thick and curly so she can’t do it properly on her own. I know other 5YO girls with straight bobs and they manage it fine though!

Anon564354 · 23/06/2022 09:58

Age 5, I still give it a once over with a comb before putting it up, but she brushes it herself.

KilmordenCastle · 23/06/2022 09:58

My 6yo has a go at brushing her hair but she doesn't really get any tangles out of it 😂 if anything she creates more. Best she can do is sort of smooth out the top layer.

I think it's quite a difficult thing to do effectively when you have relatively short arms, especially with long hair.

dodgypodgy · 23/06/2022 09:58

4 nearly 5, she brushes it over and then I finish and tie it up. She has long, wavy thick hair and uses a tangle teaser which helps. Very independent tho 😬😬

coconuthead · 23/06/2022 09:58

Depends on the child and the hair surely? My five year old has medium length wavy hair and she can do the top but always leaves the tankers underneath so I do them and put it up for her.

coconuthead · 23/06/2022 09:59

*tangles

PinkyU · 23/06/2022 09:59

I should add that I’m assuming brushing effectively and a simple but neat style (ponytail/plait/bun).

AmberGer · 23/06/2022 10:00

Ds 10 has very long hair. He could brush it (not to my standards) a year or two ago, it's curly, very thick, unruly and easily tangled (but absolutely gorgeous).
Now he can brush and put it in a pony tail but again, not very neat but passable.

KilmordenCastle · 23/06/2022 10:02

I should add that my dd has thick hair that is nearly down to her bum. Reading other replies I think that hair type and length makes a big difference on this.

BeyondMyWits · 23/06/2022 10:02

Mine was about 9 or 10, with waist length frizzy hair.

But she still likes it when she sits at my feet and I brush it through for her while we watch a film. (Shes 20 next week)

stripeymonster · 23/06/2022 10:03

11/12 maybe? My 13 year old can do amazing hair styles on herself, my 10 year old won't even attempt brushing it. My 7 year old doesn't get why you need to and doesn't have the patience or motivation to try.
