When could your daughter brush own hair?

Would love to know when other people's daughters have started brushing their own hair effectively, maybe with a reminder, and help if they are very tangly.
I'm writing a picture book on this and only have a 2 yo son. My book agent is questioning the age I assumed. Thank you so much!!

My DD did hers from age 4 or 5. She liked doing it so I didn't interfere, but I must admit it's a bit messy in most of her primary school photos!

My daughters nine and doesn’t. But then she has had mixed race hair (black/white) and it’s very curly, and it’s far easier if it just do it.

maybe you need to consider what kind of hair the child has as well?

SirenSays · 23/06/2022 10:06

Depends on the hair type and texture. The curls, kinks and coils of 3 and 4 hair types means they probably won't be doing hair care solo until nearing teens.

My just turned 8 yr old CAN do it but hates doing it so will just give a very cursory sweep through. If I actually want the tangles out I have to give it a once over after she does.

dramalamma · 23/06/2022 10:09

Really depends on the hair.... my 5 year old with shoulder length fine hair can do it pretty well herself but my 8 year old with long thick hair can only really do a surface job - not get knots out. To be fair she is quite sensoryily sensitive so most 8 year olds are would probably do a better job! But def depends on the type of hair

Mine is 6 and has just this week begun to brush her own hair and keep her own room tidy on her own.

stormelf · 23/06/2022 10:20

My four year old has a just above the shoulders bob cut, she's are to brush the front and sides but still struggles with the back. She likes to brush her hair but still needs me/her dad to finish it before styling it

Ah, that's not my son, just a fun public image of a girl with tangly hair.

My mixed race daughter was in year 4 when she started doing her own hair so around 9? Mixed results until she was 13/14.

My 6 year old has been brushing her own hair for a couple of years but only tying it up herself in the last few months. She can’t plait it yet.

Lavendersquare · 24/06/2022 10:46

My 9yo has 'brushed' her hair herself since she was 3 or 4. However it's really only the last year or so that I would say that she's been able to do it properly and get the tangled out etc.

SheWoreYellow · 24/06/2022 13:12

So what did you think and what did your agent think? Did we help at all?

MolliciousIntent · 24/06/2022 13:20

My 2.5yr old brushes her own hair, but can't do ponytails etc. It's short and straight and doesn't tangle tho, so it's very easy. She just hates anyone else doing it.

Hullabaloo31 · 24/06/2022 13:23

My 7yo has just got the hang of brushing hers and getting it all, right round the back etc. Hers is bum length and she'd still need help if very knotty.

usernotfound0000 · 24/06/2022 13:25

7 year old DD will attempt to brush before I style it. She doesn't do a terrible job but her hair is very thick so she doesn't get the underneath.

SkankingWombat · 24/06/2022 15:12

It is totally dependent on hair length and type. DD1 is 8yo with 3c curls and bum-length hair (when it's wet and pulled straight. It sits on her shoulders when dry and curly). She can brush it out wet in the shower when coated in conditioner, and she can do a basic ponytail with mixed results. If it's got super knotty then she needs an adult. It is never brushed dry!

SquigglePigs · 24/06/2022 15:17

Not helpful but my DD is 3.7 with curly hair and I think it's going to be a fair while before she'll be doing it herself. She loves having a go at mine though!😄

R1408 · 24/06/2022 15:20

4 nearly 5, straight fine hair in a short bob - can brush her hair and put a clip in the front.

Chaotica · 24/06/2022 15:27
  1. She's still not great at it at 16. I think PPs are right: it depends on hair type, but also on the child.
