Which wipes, nappy bags and liners are the best/cheapest eco wise?

Hi

I'm now addicted to my Bumgenius nappies and love them!! But I don't see the point in using re-usable nappies if I'm not doing my bit by using eco friendly wipes etc!

I still want to use wipes (I know water and cotton wool is cheaper) and the bags to put the pooey liners and wipes in? I usually use Johnsons or Pampers wipes but I'm under the impression these are not bio-degradable? I've found some degradable bags in Boots, a bit more expensive but not too bad!

Can anyone recommend some reasonably priced liners, wipes and bags that are eco friendly? Also can you get flushable degradable liners? I don't mind purchasing off the internet.

Thanks

Willow

Use washable wipes and stick them in with your nappies. Either buy them from one of the nappy websites or chop up an old towel or similar.

Buy flushable liners (in the past Boots brand were not flushable - not sure now?)

If you still need bags use any old bags/wrappers you have around. Don't be sucked into buying special or scented ones. I use all kinds of things - old carriers, the outer part of multipacks etc. Might not look as nice but still does the job...You are only putting stuff in the bin so doesn't have to look good.

Some of the ladies on here that pay to advertise in the small business section will no doubt be more than happy to advise you further. They will also be able to sell you what you need in terms of wipes/liners etc.

Hope this helps.

buy a fleece throw... cut it up and use as homemade wipes, as its fleece it wont fray

you get get 2 colours... one for hands and faces in the kitchen etc and another colour for nappies and bums!

very cheap, can be washed with any thing at any temp and will last for ever

If you are unsure about using washable wipes, just spend a couple of minutes working out how much you spend on "normal" wipes - you will be possibly be .

nature also make nappy bags... they arnt scented and i think they are amde from starch.... they are quite eco friendly if that is what you are after

Octothechildherder · 14/01/2008 21:48

You can buy cheap washable wipes - I use the Lollipop ones and a waterproof washable bag for dirty nappies from them as well - don't use disp anything if I can help it!

JingleyJen · 14/01/2008 21:49

nature baby make their nappy sacks from cornstarch. and the nappy lady.co.uk does washable wipes like mini flannels for the bum.
I take a few dry ones out with me and the spare nappies and wet them (usually find access to water) then wrap them up with dirty nappy for bringing home - if we are out that is!

As for liners we go with flushable ones that are like loo roll, we should do this bit as well but haven't.

onepieceoflollipop · 14/01/2008 21:51

To avoid any confusion (following Octo's post) I would like to confirm that despite my name I am not a Lollipop agent trying to drum up business!

Someone asked me before if I was an agent and I was puzzled but now I have just realised why they asked!

Nappyzone · 14/01/2008 21:55

dont know about eco but cheapo i use face cloths - for the bag i use an old carrier or for nursery a special snazzy wetbag.

I did wonder onepieceoflollipop!

moljam · 14/01/2008 22:01

we got pound shop fleece blankets.chopped up in 2 sizes, smaller square ones for wipes and bigger oblong ones as liners(gave up on liners in end though as ds has better bum without).for wipe solution we either used plain water or camomile tea, drop of olive oil and tiny tiny drop of tea tree and lavender oil.kept in small tupperware tub.nappy bag we used old pe/swimming bag-much cheaper than 'wet bags'.

When I started using cloth - there didn't seem to be any of these extras around and when I had ds2 I was amazed that it never crossed my mind re the waterproof bag thing and washable wipes! I used to put them in a nappy sack with huggies wipes and then empty half of it into the bin when I got home!

FlameNFurter · 14/01/2008 22:18

I got some lovely wipes from baby bufters as part of a gifty set thing - they are soft cotton on one side, terry on the other. You can get em to match your nappies I have a set of little pirate ones.

I assumed you were an agent too Lollipop!!!

You can get various flushable liners (I can't use fleece ones) - I find the cheapest ones the best (I sell em and so do babykind) - they are nice and wide to catch everything, will last one wash cycle so you can reuse if just wet, and flush. Bambinex are meant to be good for flushing, but I found them that bit too narrow for my liking - I like long enough to go over the edges and cover all the bases.

What to stick em in? I got a couple of bambinex bags free when I bought multipacks of wambamboos (as they were then). i either use those, or old carrier bags I have to be used up.

lollipop - see it wasn't just me who thought it ...and here we are on the same thread again

willowwisp I've been using washable wipes for quite a while now and haven;t looked back since I worked out a way that worked for me - horrible baby wipe things are so expensive, not entire;y sure what is in them but they are very good at removing mould from pvc and bathroom tiles you know!

I use loo roll to remove the worst from the bottom and flush that down the loo. Then the bottom gets a wipe over with a piece of cut up old bed sheet onto which I have sprayed a camomile solution. I used to soak my wipes but they smelt a bit musty after a day or so I prefer to use a spray bottle. The solution is just camomile tea, a couple of drops of olive oil and one drop of lavender or tea tree oil. I put it in an old ecover spray bottle and it lasts for a few days. Really easy to make and saves loads of money. Used wipes just go into the nappy bucket

I use fleece liners.

With my system no need for nappy bags either. Nice to be completely reusable.

Baby Bufters site

Pannacotta · 15/01/2008 09:57

Thanks Flame and lennygrrl.
COby like your system, I tried wipes with a solution in a box but wasnt too keen. Will try a spray bottle too.

Nappyzone · 15/01/2008 11:54

i thought you were to but only coz i know there is a lady who comes on here who is and i thought you were her name changed lol! For nursery i have used the free drawstring bag i got fromthe halifax - very versatile as a wet bag and i get to wrap the cord round my neck when carrying the world into nursery!

onepieceoflollipop · 15/01/2008 13:43

coby stop following me! I am going to go on a really random thread later and see how long it takes for you to crop up!

Ladies perhaps I should change my name just on these type of threads to avoid confusion. . My name comes from the Hungry Caterpillar book, the bit where he eats one piece of chocolate cake etc etc and my dd1 always says "onepieceoflollipop!"

Anyway, Willowwisp sorry for slight hijack but hope you found some of the advice useful. Once you get washable wipes you won't look back!

bobsmum · 15/01/2008 13:48

Just noticed that Asda now do eco nappy sacks and wipes. Not convinced of the chemical content tbh, but they are biodegradable.

When dd was in nappies fulltime I got my washable wipes from Nappies by Minki and Ella's House. Gorgeous patterned fleece with terry or hemp on the other side.

I kept them in an ice cream tub filled with chamomile and took some out in a mini wet bag for days out.

But dd's just toilet trained now. Just have to wait until baby no3 arrives in April and I can have one last nappy frenzy
