Newborn - 1 day old

Just wanted some advice - my baby is one day old and already won't settle for naps unless held - everytime I put her down after a feed she cries until she's held. Her sleeps seems very shallow. She also seems gassy and settles for a short feed, passes some gas and falls sleep on the boob almost instantly. Is this normal for 1 day old?

Yep. Congratulations! :-)

ofwarren · 05/06/2022 23:10

Congratulations!
Yes, totally normal
Have you been winding her after her feed to try and get the air up?

Verbena87 · 05/06/2022 23:12

Very normal. Congratulations!

She's so fresh. She is used to be enclosed and held every second of her life. First day is nothing. They don't really like being put down for a while!

BelleTheBananas · 05/06/2022 23:12

Perfectly normal: google 4th trimester.

Neither of my babies could be put down at all. I coped by (safe) co-sleeping, feeding on demand and carrying them in a sling. Babies don’t sleep like adults, they wake often and do most of their feeding at night because prolactin is higher at that time.

It gets easier but be prepared for many hours of cluster feeding (to build supply!).

Good luck!

Aria2015 · 05/06/2022 23:12

Yes! Very normal! Got Vern minimal sleep with both of mine the first few days. I found swaddling helped. Congratulations 🥰

bloodywhitecat · 05/06/2022 23:12

Yup, she's come from a small, secure safe place and is used to that feeling of being cocooned so being held and hearing familiar sounds (your voice, your heartbeat etc is reassuring and comforting to her.

Congratulations!

Barleysugar86 · 05/06/2022 23:13

Very normal. I had some luck with a cocoonababy and/ or a sleepyhead if I didn't to get the baby off me to get things done- i used to feed to sleep in them in some ridiculous positions and then back away and let them nap in them. Never had much luck trying to put them down in the cot or a moses basket!

DuckDuckNo · 05/06/2022 23:16

Congratulations! Just nurse to sleep, it'll make everything easier.

Youseethethingis1 · 05/06/2022 23:16

At one day old, she literally doesn't know she's born yet. She just wants to feel safe and you are all she knows in this great big world.
Congratulations 💐

Yumchips · 05/06/2022 23:17

My goodness - this is reassuring (to know everything is ok) but I always thought the newborn phase was meant to be very sleepy! She smells fantastic so at least there's that to enjoy. 😀 the midwife today told me breastfed babies don't need to be burped - is this right? I'm still giving colostrum at this point, the milk hasn't come in yet. Should I burp her after this? Thank you!

yes, all normal.

look up swaddling - it keeps the baby enclosed and feeling safe when they are very little. Mine would not sleep without it for the first 3 months.

and get a very soft wearable sling - you can wear your baby during the day for the first few weeks and that will allow you to move about the house / eat a sandwich etc.

ChuckBerrysBoots · 05/06/2022 23:24

Have a read about the 4th trimester - she’s never been apart from you. Congratulations!

JanglyBeads · 05/06/2022 23:28

People will have a range of views on this but I never burped my bf babies as a matter of course. Whole countries (eg France iirc) don't burp their babies.

Perpop · 05/06/2022 23:30

Fourth trimester

give this a read! If you can - spend the first few weeks doing skin to skin, feeding, cuddles, rest, and being taken care of while you take care of baby!

Well done on breastfeeding. My baby has been breastfed for 8 months and didn’t need much burping in the beginning. All babies are different, maybe try burping when your milk comes in and see if they need it! If they do you’ll know as they’ll be uncomfortable.

You’re doing a great job! X

CandyLeBonBon · 05/06/2022 23:37

All my bf babies belched like you wouldn't believe! So I wouldn't agree with your midwife's a suggestion but I'm only going on a sample of 3. Congratulations on your newborn rollercoaster ride!

FuoriComeUnBalcone · 05/06/2022 23:38

the midwife today told me breastfed babies don't need to be burped - is this right?

Not true at all - it really depends on the baby! I breastfed both of mine and they always brought up big burps when winded and squirmed and cried if put down without doing it.

quietnightmare · 05/06/2022 23:43

Normal ! Congratulations! Breastfed babies need burping majority of the time. Baby will eventually be able to nap without being held but right now baby needs all the cuddles they can get

cdba88 · 05/06/2022 23:53

Google 4th trimester.

Lilbunnyfufu · 05/06/2022 23:56

I have to disagree with your midwife all 3 of mine needed winding after breast.

easyday · 06/06/2022 00:23

Babies are different. My son was born during a heatwave, three weeks early, and had no problem sleeping.
My daughter was also born a bit early but was tricky to put down.
But I did start a routine from day one with both. Just really did the same queues every day. Repeat repeat repeat. Takes a while to sink in but by three months I had babies that went down awake but drowsy and slept well.
During the day naps were pretty much baby led, but I also woke the baby up if going on for too long.

SunflowerGardens · 06/06/2022 01:47

Yeah they tend not to sleep anywhere but on you... nobody really tells you that! I used a sleepyhead with my second baby. They aren't recommended by the lullaby trust but I'm fairly sure falling asleep sitting up whilst holding the baby isn't recommended either and co sleeping not an option as DC1 in the bed so I went for the more sensible option.

SazCat · 06/06/2022 02:04

My first would not be put down to sleep for a while, she was BF and I could never get much wind out of her and she always seemed unsettled.

My second however would burp easily after BF and she would go down in the crib right from birth! It's amazing how different babies can be.

It's hard at the start but it passes so quickly xx

Marty13 · 06/06/2022 02:16

Mine didn't have this issue but weren't breastfed. I think swaddling can help.

I'll probably be stoned for saying this but I'd want to get my baby used to falling asleep on their own as I don't fancy being used as a pacifier. Once babies are used to being held all the time it can be hard to break the habit, same if they're used to falling asleep on the boob.

TheTeenageYears · 06/06/2022 03:30

My breastfed DS projectile vomited all across the lounge and bedroom at about 6 weeks and we ended up at the hospital. He was blue around the mouth which is a sign of trapped wind. I was told to wind him more than I had been.
