Newborn smell

Does anyone else not smell the newborn smell? I've just had DD2 and don't think she has an intoxicating newborn smell that I've read about, and I didn't think DD1 had it either. Neither of them smell/smelled like anything really.

Is it just me?

Congratulations on your baby daughter!

I didn't notice any newborn smell from my son at all. People say babies smell of milk etc but I couldn't detect that at all. Maybe cause I smelled the same as him 🤣

Luckystar1 · 25/05/2022 21:10

I didn’t! I read somewhere that the smell might be the amniotic fluid and my first 2 were water births so that would’ve erased any smell!

I did have an overwhelmingly delicious smell from my middle child as she got older though. It was amazing!

noblegreenk · 25/05/2022 21:11

I've never smelt it on other people's newborns, in fact I always think they either smell of sick, milk or sweaty. But when I had DD she smelt absolutely amazing to me. I couldn't stop sniffing her for weeks!

I can mainly smell it on the newborn onesies packed away and got out a year later!

ParadiseLaundry · 25/05/2022 21:17

DS1 had a little clump of something that looked like blood in his hair that dried and smelled absolutely intoxicating. I didn't want to bath him for ages because I knew it would go away (it did Sad)

When DS2 was born I was insistent that they barely wipe him because I wanted the smell again Grin

The milky, baby smell I could smell on them from about 5 months onwards.

I think babies smell pretty awful. I didn’t think DD smelt of anything nice at all lol, mostly milk which I can’t stand. I still thought she was the best thing ever, but didn’t get the smell thing at all.

Qwill · 25/05/2022 21:18

Nope! Didn’t have it either. But I like the smell after bathtime and the lingering smell from the fabric conditioner on the sleepsuits 😂

DD had loads of blood from a clip and I thought it smelt awful lol. We didn’t bathe her as wanted to protect the biome but she just smelt faintly of cheese to me

I did. My first dd had this smell, can’t describe it, it was addictive.

midwife took her and she had strong perfume on, never smelled it again, only her perfume. Did piss me off.

it was like the nicest smell ever

ElspethBoomingHowsen · 25/05/2022 21:21

My son had the most amazing smell for the first few days. Couldn’t get enough of it!

I am a midwife and can’t say I’ve ever noticed it on any body else newborn

Snard4 · 25/05/2022 21:23

The smell you get when you first have them and their hair is still wet- musty and earthy. I guess that’s the amniotic fluid? It smelled good but not intoxicating.

However, I loved the smell of my babies’ breath! When they only drunk breast milk, their breath was sweet and delicious and I actually used to time my breathing to breathe theirs in 😳 that sounds so weird!

TickleMyFancies · 25/05/2022 21:23

Puppies smell the same to me as well! Love it 😊

FishfingerFlinger · 25/05/2022 21:23

DS1 smelled amazing. DS2 smelled of nothing. I was so disappointed I genuinely think it impacted our bonding at first.

DS2 was a c-section, if that makes a difference.

BergamotMouse · 25/05/2022 21:24

I felt cheated. My son smelt like a goat!!!

We later found out he had loads of allergies so suspect this was the reason Confused

Snard4 · 25/05/2022 21:25

I guess it’s an animalistic thing. You love the smell of your own baby so that you a) can recognise it among other babies 🤣 and b) want to keep it! 🤣

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 25/05/2022 21:27

DD smelled rank. I told a friend, who sniffed her and was all 😍 - I'm clearly immune to newborn stench.

Carbis · 25/05/2022 21:31

I’ve never been able to detect a baby smell either. However, when my eldest started nursery, he came home smelling different (a combination of different washing detergent and food I think) and it made me really sad. So maybe he did smell of something but I didn’t notice.

Schulte · 25/05/2022 21:32

DD smelt of sausages… DH was convinced it was so he would bond with her.

myyellowcar · 25/05/2022 21:34

Puppy smell is lush but I never had the amazing smell thing with DS. He just had cheesy gross smelly hands after a while, even soap did nothing to get rid of that.

shivawn · 25/05/2022 21:35

I loved snelling my babies head in the newborn days!

I'm surprised someone here said babies smell sweaty to her, I have never smelled sweat off a baby.

TulipsGarden · 25/05/2022 21:38

Nope, mine never smelled of anything.

Gettissuesgotissues · 25/05/2022 21:41

Yep, both of mine for the first few months.

Normando91 · 25/05/2022 21:42

I thought I was a complete weirdo when I mentioned to my midwife that the smell of my babies head was intoxicating 🙈 Nice to know I’m not quite alone in that. I couldn’t stop for weeks, would just sit with him in my arms, smelling his head.

Sadly that disappeared after a while and now he mostly smells like whatever food he’s decided to smear all over himself 😭

TerryChoc · 25/05/2022 21:43

I have been waiting for this! Thought it was just me being a a poor second time mother.
Dc1 yes, never stopped sniffing the smell it was the best and adorable but unexplainable. Dc2 I was wondering where is this smell? Am I just used to it? Have I lost my maternal instinct? What the hell. As it happens she developed her own “smell” but it wasn’t that “newborn smell” but still I didn’t get that newborn smell second time

Neptunesgiraffe · 25/05/2022 21:45

Yep the smell of mine was like cinnamony-sweetness.
