Mixed sex siblings sharing bedrooms

What age is too old to share?

DS is 10 DD is 8 they have their own rooms at home but will be sharing on holiday and it got me thinking about how old until they won't want to share/it won't be appropriate?

DS is quite immature and still reasonably happy to walk around naked. DD more self aware but very keen to share with DS.

Me and my brother who is 5 years younger than me were always happy to share when on holiday. We only used the bedrooms to sleep - got dressed/undressed in the bathroom. I think if they're both still happy to do so, it's fine.

HSKAT · 21/05/2022 09:52

I think me and my brother stopped sharing when we literally stopped going on holiday as a family and went with friends.
It's to sleep in, all part of the fun.

KangarooKenny · 21/05/2022 09:54

I’d let them decide individually. Perhaps, when your DD starts her periods, she might decide she no longer wants to share.

Qwill · 21/05/2022 09:56

Only stopped sharing when we stopped family holidays. It’s only a few weeks, it’s absolutely fine. I’m not why periods would stop you sharing a room? Maybe my family is a bit more open about it, same with any bowel issues!!

TeacupDrama · 21/05/2022 09:57

sharing on holiday is completely different to sharing at home on holiday bathroom can be used for dressing etc my friend still sometimes shares with her brother on holiday and they are adults

milkysmum · 21/05/2022 09:57

I think sharing on holiday is very different to sharing a room at home.
I have a 13 year old girl and 10 year old boy. We have rented a 2 bed house abroad in the summer and they will share.

I thought the legal age was 10.
Ok for this year but definitely rethink for next time.

Legal? You mean you think children can't legally share after the age of 10?

A week or so on holiday is fine, OP.

There’s no legal age - the police aren’t going to rock up and arrest OP. You may be thinking of social housing guidelines

Mine shared on holiday up until 17 and 15. Due to the pandemic the last 2 years we've had holiday cottages in the UK, but if we'd been in a hotel abroad they would've still shared. As long as they have access to a private bathroom and separate beds, I don't think it's an issue for a week or two if they are happy.

Cotherstone · 21/05/2022 10:39

Our 10yo DD and 5yo DS will have to share a king size bed on holiday this year. It did occur to me too when DD might be too old to like this but I’ll leave it to her to decide. Plus DS is awesome to sleep with.

But it will only be for sleep - DD will read in our bed while DS falls asleep, then go over later to sleep in that bed. They’ll live for a week. We can’t afford a 3 bed in the summer peak.

Moancup · 21/05/2022 10:39

DP and his sister would still share on holiday into their 20s.

Awrite · 21/05/2022 10:40

Last summer was the first time my two stopped sharing on holiday. Dd was 15, ds almost 11.

They shared a room at home until dd was around 10.

lookforthesun · 21/05/2022 10:40

I would say no upper age limit when on a holiday

Hadalifeonce · 21/05/2022 10:42

DS and DD shared a room on holiday, they were 19 &17 at the time.

hellcatspanglelalala · 21/05/2022 10:48

My two are in their 20's and will still happily share a twin room if we all go on holiday!

ChocolateHippo · 21/05/2022 10:50

Don't children always share on holiday? They just get dressed in the bathroom when they're at the age to need privacy. The only thing I would be slightly uncomfortable about would be mixed sex siblings with a big age gap sharing a bed when past the age of around 11/12.

Hallyup89 · 21/05/2022 11:11

I don't think it's an issue for any aged siblings to share on holiday. There'll always be a bathroom they can go to for privacy, or hopefully they'd respect each other if one of them wanted the room alone for a few minutes. The rest of the time they're only going to be sleeping. It's a non-issue if it's only for a week or so.

That's a guideline for social housing to determine how many bedrooms you'd be entitled to. There's nothing illegal about it.

Hotcuppatea · 21/05/2022 11:16

Mu 15 year old and 13 year old will be sharing this summer. Its not an issue for them.

ChristinaBlang · 21/05/2022 11:17

By the time ours were that age they were more comfortable sharing a room with same sex parent on holiday.

StopStartStop · 21/05/2022 11:22

Not a good idea at all.

Zemw · 21/05/2022 11:24

My DS 19 and DD 22 still willingly share on a holiday. Its a few days.

Snowiscold · 21/05/2022 11:26

Completely fine and normal.

You'll need to expand on that!
