How the hell do you get a nappy on…

… a 10 month old!??!!

Its a bloody nightmare. He will not stay still! I’ve gotten good at attacking from behind and putting it on backwards as he scurries away from me, but now he’s taken to sitting down and when I try to put it on that way he makes his grand escape 🙈 Help needed!!

Pull ups and get him to stand up. They are just as absorbent as normal nappies.

Or if you still have a toy arch from when he was younger, use that.

Or hand him a forbidden toy like car keys or bum cream, and be quick.

LoveSpringDaffs · 20/04/2022 12:18

Don't make it a fun game!

serious voice, use arm/leg to pin him down, give him something to look at he's not usually given (not too heavy as they often drop in on their face!)

look forward to wine & remember 'it's just a phase & wont last forever!!)

NannyR · 20/04/2022 12:21

I change them laid down on the floor, and use my leg to (gently!) pin them down if necessary.

@LoveSpringDaffs… am I allowed a glass of wine after every nappy change?? That may make things more bearable 😂

I know some people hate changing tables but I find it the only way to contain them. Whenever I try on the floor they just escape.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 20/04/2022 12:45

Lie them down, putting your legs either side of them so they can’t turn their head. If they can’t roll over to get up they can’t get away.

Well, I meant at the end of the day & I wouldn't want you to swap one problem for another! Maybe you can have another treat during the day & save the eine for when you've got wriggle bum in bed!!

ancientgran · 20/04/2022 13:03

I always did it on my lap, they don't feel so secure and tend to stay still. Well mine did, maybe they had a strong survival instinct.

Normando91 · 20/04/2022 13:32

@ancientgran… that’s about the only suggestion here I haven’t tried. I’ll give it a go but he’s absolutely mental, throws himself off every surface he gets near 🙈

I always use the Pampers active fit nappy pants from about 6m onwards. It's like a pull up so even as they're rolling off or crawling you can still yank it on! Honestly, they are a life saver!

HerculesMulligan · 20/04/2022 13:58

Another vote for pullups as soon as they get wriggly. I do nappy changes lying on their tummy across my knee when they're little and standing up once they're able.

See I always did this too . Sit forward on your sofa with everything to hand , keeping a good hold of the legs and change away , the oldest methods are always the best .

Moochio · 20/04/2022 14:00

Pull ups. Give them a nappy cream tub to hold.

RunnerDuck2020 · 20/04/2022 17:00

My 11 month old DS is exactly the same - I absolutely dread nappy change time! I’m not sure I can really help as we still really struggle with this whatever we try, but I can definitely sympathise!

Is your DS standing steadily? We switched to pull ups and I tend to try and get him to stand up and step out of the old nappy and into the new one which makes things a bit easier. That obviously only works if it’s just a wee though😆

Have you seen the Wriggler changing mats? They claim to solve just this problem… I have just ordered one and it arrived this afternoon, so I am hoping that may help though I’m a bit sceptical!

Normando91 · 20/04/2022 19:02

@RunnerDuck2020 No, he’s not quite standing steadily yet. We’ve tried the pull ups but same issue, suppose they will be easier when he is standing himself.
Ooh, I hadn’t heard of the Wriggler changing mats but I’ve just had a look and they look worth a shot! Let me know how you get on with yours! 😂

I use reusable nappies and my little one has taken to enjoying the challenge of trying to undo the velcro now mid change. I try singing, games and toys.... occasionally I don't end up covered in poo.

SoggyPaper · 20/04/2022 19:08

I used to change nappies on the floor and pin my small people down using my leg across their chest. 🤣

Svara · 20/04/2022 19:19

I struggled from when DS was 5 months and crawling. No tricks like stickers on his hands worked for long. I ended up putting him in the smallest size of nappy pants when uncooperative from 6 months. I offset the cost by holding him over the loo at nappy changes from 8 months, so fewer nappies.

Rainallnight · 20/04/2022 19:21

I used the @SoggyPaper method! Sit perpendicular to them and pin them down with your legs across the torso

Will he stand holding on to something? I was putting them on DS standing up from 6 months, he didn't stand alone until 10 months.

Fromthebirdsnest · 20/04/2022 19:22

We use pampers pull ups on our just turned 1 year old girl , she is the most difficult baby to change (she's the youngest of 4) and its much easier! X

BakeOffRewatch · 20/04/2022 19:27

I thought using pull ups before you want to potty train was bad for when you did, due to them getting used to feeling of wetness in pull ups?

if you’re planning to send to nursery, they don’t allow pull ups in baby room, so going back on that will be hard.

I had same problem OP, I bought mini board books which I kept on changing table, baby grabs those. Initially they were interested in them, then I’d read it to them, and now they “read” it to me! Got these ones from boots www.boots.com/peter-rabbit-big-box-of-little-books-10259117?cm_mmc=bmm-buk-google-ppc--PLAs_HeroCompare--Baby_Nursery-_-UK_Smart_Shopping_Baby_Nursery Aldi has some tower sets as well. www.aldi.co.uk/search?text=Mini%20board%20book%20library&category=ALL

Svara · 20/04/2022 19:34

Nappy pants aren't pull ups, they don't feel wet. If nursery don't like them then they can use regular nappies surely? I didn't use pull ups for toilet training as they are too much like nappies, I used cloth training pants that only catch a bit if they are holding on and need the loo.

Daqqe · 20/04/2022 19:36

Nappy pants are a game changer for wees. DD could hold her body weight supported by the sofa at 10 months. I’d pop a book or toy on the sofa, lean her against it, whip trousers & nappy off, quick wipe to freshen up & pull a new one back up. Problem solved.

Unfortunately, doesn’t solve the poo nappies. They remained a battle for a long time 🙈 DD2 was so bad & would get poo EVERYWHERE 😫 I resorted to putting Bing on my iPlayer on my phone & that solved the problem. She would lay still & watch it. Probs not amazing parenting but whatever works when poo is involved 😂

Daqqe · 20/04/2022 19:38

@BakeOffRewatch - I’ve used 3 nurseries & all 3 have allowed nappy pants.

Nappy pants are not pull ups. Pull ups are really thin & designed to feel wet. Nappy pants are just a regular nappy but in a pant shape!
