Nursery clothes

Wasn't sure where to post this....

My two year old is about to start nursery. I've got no idea where the best place is to get her clothes/shoes from.... we mostly buy Next clothes for her and shoes are from Clark's.

They don't wear shoes indoors apparently but I keep hearing that the clothes get wrecked pretty quickly and to put her in old stuff. She doesn't have old stuff that fits so I need to kit her out for nurser.

Please can anyone share tips on what to buy and possibly where from of Next isn't ideal.

Budget is £100 but I've got to get her a pair of shoes out of that too.

That's a huge budget! Just go to charity shops, vinted etc or supermarkets. Clothes won't get wrecked as such, just a bit stained, which doesn't matter.

OhRiRi · 09/04/2022 23:40

Ebay, Facebook marketplace, supermarket multipacks

Whatalovelydaffodil · 09/04/2022 23:40

Just get some leggings, tshirts/ tunic tops. What have nursery said that she needs? Wellies? Rainproofs?

I'd get her a nursery 'uniform'.

Five pairs of basic leggings/tracksuit bottoms.

Five basic t-shirts.

3 hoodies/cardigans.

Pair of cheap trainers or canvas pumps.

You'll probably also need to send wellies.

I'd look at Primark or a supermarket (Sainsbury's clothes wash really well). Or stick with next but go for a basic pack of leggings and t-shirts.

I'm basing this on 5 days a week, basically an outfit per day is best.

NotNowBoris · 09/04/2022 23:43

I bought second hand stuff for nursery, mixed in with a few basic pairs of Marks and Spencer joggers. Next have multipacks of tops and bottoms that are good value if you want to buy new. Nothing of ours has actually been trashed any more than it would at home. They use aprons when they paint so its mainly a bit of mud on the knees if anything.

NerrSnerr · 09/04/2022 23:45

We didn't have special nursery clothes, they just wore every day clothes. Nursery clothes didn't get more ruined at nursery than being in the garden or the park.

TokenGinger · 09/04/2022 23:56

Asda has 20% off kids' clothes at the moment. You'll get loads for that. Though I buy a lot off Vinted/eBay too.

I'd probably get 10x leggings and 10x tops. We always send a spare in with my son and he often uses it - spilt food, wet from water play etc.

HalloHello · 10/04/2022 00:01

I get all my daughter's nursery clothes from Asda or Primark. She goes 3 full days. Autumn winter she has 4x joggers and jumper sets, and keeps 1 set in her nursery bag. Then she has 2 pairs of Lidl waterproof trousers, 1 set for wearing and 1 spare in her bag, and a warm coat. she always wears waterproof winter boots and has a pair of plimsolls for indoors, 2 hats, 5000 pairs of gloves!
Spring/Summer I've just bought 4x t-shirts and 4x leggings, 2x thin hoodies, normal wellies, trainers and a sun hat. She's usually covered in mud, sand, paint, slime, pen etc but I've never had a stain that didn't wash out easily! Don't spend loads though as they'll only wear for a term or 2 until they're either too small or seasons change.

AHungryCaterpillar · 10/04/2022 00:04

Primark.

NewYearEveryYear · 10/04/2022 00:04

Supermarket multi packs of leggings/ joggers and long / short sleeved tops were great.

I always bought outdoor coats for nursery from eBay (some really nice ones, hardly worn, but about 1/4 price of new).

The only thing I didn't scrimp on were shoes, maybe just something my mum told me in the 1989's but I have always believed that fitting shoes are critical for growing feet. So I stuck to Clarks or Startrite for those.

Danikm151 · 10/04/2022 00:05

Get to pep&co (poundland) and Asda. You’ll only need £50 including shoes. 🙂

NewYearEveryYear · 10/04/2022 00:05

1980's... Not specifically 1989 🙂

underneaththeash · 10/04/2022 00:11

We just had a load of clothes from sainsbury's and wellies (from sainsbury's) and the a pair of slippers for indoors. They got very dirty - which is fine as you want children to be able to play without being worried about dirt!

I'd be amazed if you needed to spend more than £40.

Howmanydaysuntilfriday · 10/04/2022 00:14

Matalan are selling 6 t-shirts for £7 in 6 different colours and 6 leggings to match for £7

Roseandgeranium · 10/04/2022 00:17

We’ve never bothered with different clothes for nursery. Nothing’s been ruined. Sure, he sometimes comes back dirty but no more so than from a day at home playing in the garden or baking/painting with me. Nothing a perfectly normal 40 degree wash won’t sort.

Chely · 10/04/2022 00:56

Most of ours went to a school nursery and were sent in uniform. Eldest went to private nursery and mostly sent her in supermarket clothes, if you can pick up stuff there on sale it's super cheap.

SnowRoses · 10/04/2022 01:04

Primark. Tesco. Asda (George)
But buy good shoes , start rite or Clarks still

britneyisfree · 10/04/2022 10:54

Thanks a million everyone!

The only thing they told me was that she'll need wellies, nothing else.

I'd rather get the wellies from the supermarket than Clark's but I only know her shoe size in Clarks!! Does anyone know how I can find out?

We just buy bundles from Facebook and label everything using a stamptastic stamp.
The Clark’s size should be the same in supermarkets too, you may struggle to find half sizes but you can get welly liners if needed.
Nothing we ever put our LO in has been destroyed but there are some paint spots which I can’t get out even with vanish but that’s half the fun of nursery.

sleighbellsjiggling · 10/04/2022 11:05

I just send them in their usual clothes with a spare of everything in their bag (unless potty training in which case a hundred spares). To be honest they get more wrecked being at home than they do at preschool/nursery with my two.

Primark and Asda were great for leggings and tops plus their wellies were good too. Just use the same size as you do at Clark's. I prefer other shops shoes to Clark's too TBH. M&S and Next have been great for trainers and sandals.

8dpwoah · 10/04/2022 11:16

I agree with the above, she didn't get any grubbier than should would at home but equally I didn't send her in her 'best' clothes either. Mainly it's important to have them in comfy things that they can relax in so it was basically top suitable for the weather, leggings or jeggings and hoody or cardie every day. We did have nursery wellies and also left a puddlesuit with them rather than carrying back and forwards. She did also have a specific nursery coat, once I'd discovered the joys of secondhand this wasn't such an extravagance! But we only ever lost hair bobbles if I remember rightly, she had her name in everything and nursery were good. We did gain a hoodie one weekend but the parents hadn't put the name in it so hardly surprising!

As for shoes we like Sainsbury's the best, sizing is the same as the startrite measure thing although you don't get the variety in widths. To be honest if you said here's £100 for kids' clothes and shoes I'd be in Sainsbury's before anywhere else, next and m&s washes nicer and is perhaps a bit more generously sized so lasts longer but I wouldn't say their stuff is worth double what you pay from a supermarket, although I don't like Asda so much as the other ones it's still fine for basics. There's just too much reliance on character clothing in there for me whereas Sainsbury's and Tesco especially seem to go more for interesting prints and colours.

8dpwoah · 10/04/2022 11:19

Forgot to say, a little backpack is good for putting spare clothes and any other bits and bobs like a hat and glove set to stay at nursery then come home for the weekend or whenever they've used spare clothes, if the bag was in hand before the end of the week I knew they'd had a messy day!

MotherOfDragon20 · 10/04/2022 14:20

I really like H&M for nursery clothes, lots of leggings and t shirt sets. Reasonable quality to take a battering at nursery for a fairly good price. They’re also quite generous in size so last a while if you roll up the sleeves!

forestsmurf · 10/04/2022 14:48

Draw around her foot on paper, cut out, measure on sole of wellies. Or take her to try on.
Ebay and sainsbury's are my nursery clothes staples, especially when sainsbury's have a sale.
