Nursery clothes

Wasn't sure where to post this....

My two year old is about to start nursery. I've got no idea where the best place is to get her clothes/shoes from.... we mostly buy Next clothes for her and shoes are from Clark's.

They don't wear shoes indoors apparently but I keep hearing that the clothes get wrecked pretty quickly and to put her in old stuff. She doesn't have old stuff that fits so I need to kit her out for nurser.

Please can anyone share tips on what to buy and possibly where from of Next isn't ideal.

Budget is £100 but I've got to get her a pair of shoes out of that too.

My LO gets really dirty at nursery - not sure how they manage it! I buy most of her clothes second hand anyway (recently got a huge bag of stuff off gumtree for £20), so I make sure she wears 2nd hand stuff that I'm not very fond of on nursery days. Then if it gets covered in mud or paint that won't wash out I don't mind throwing the odd item in the bin.

girlmom21 · 10/04/2022 19:19

H&M are crap. They don't last. Primark for nursery clothes.

I got 5 pairs of leggings, 5 jumpers and 15 pairs of pants for £50 in the winter.

Your dc Clark's shoe size should be the same anywhere. So if it's a 5c then just try a 5 in another shop? The letter is the width in Clarks. I haven't bought anything specific for dcs nursery. He just gets sent in whatever he's almost growing out of so atleast it's getting used and I'm less worried about it being trashed. But agree with just supermarket basics if not.

Second hand shop. My child's nursery wardrobe is made up entirely of second hand stuff, tops and leggings for 50p for example. If it gets ruined at nursery then I'm not bothered if it has to go in the bin. I have also managed to get second hand wellies and shoes in good condition for nursery but I appreciate that sometimes its just luck with things like that. She has two coats for nursery and both were £5 from someone selling on Facebook. I did have to buy a puddle suit which I bought new as they can be harder to come by.

britneyisfree · 11/04/2022 09:35

Thanks again everyone.

I hadn't realised the shoe sizes were the same without the letter - rookie mistake!

I think I'll do a mix of sainsburys/primark and get the shoes from Clark's as normal.
I used to get stuff in m&s but none of it really lasts, all her newborn baby grows got bobbly after only a few washes. Although they sell great tights.

Thanks for the tip about Asda, I will get a few bits from there. They sell toddler leggings and she's been asking me for a pair for a while now but I hadn't been able to find any!!

I find Asda and Tesco clothes to be excellent quality, Asda cheaper than Tesco but Tesco styles are very cool!

OhRiRi · 11/04/2022 18:55

Worth having a look on Facebook in your area. When stuff is outgrown here, I sell some on (the branded stuff) but the rest gets put in a bin bag and is free to collector - usually an entire kit out suitable for nursery, some marks but no major stains, no rips and no damage. I generally just want it gone rather than bothering to sell it for any financial gain

Piper22 · 11/04/2022 19:13

Hi OP, I would get her a couple of packs of leggings/ jogging bottoms and similarly a couple of multipacks of tops from somewhere like Asda? That way you can mix and match and have loads of different outfits but equally it doesn’t matter so much if they come home in a bit of a mess

Rebecca1305 · 11/04/2022 20:51

Supermarket wellies will be the same size as Clarks they just don’t do width size ? They always come up wide anyway don’t bother with Clarks wellies.

MindatWork · 11/04/2022 20:58

Supermarkets are four best bet op, and the m&s 3 for 2 deal is good.

Bit mystified by you not being able to find toddler leggings anywhere though? Literally everywhere that sells kids clothes sells them!

britneyisfree · 12/04/2022 22:43

@MindatWork sorry that was auto correct. I meant jeggings!! She's been asking for a pair of jeans.

EBay, Vinted, bundles on local Facebook - that's loads of money for a toddler that only needs a few outfits for nursery, don't overthink it.

BundtCake · 12/04/2022 22:47

Asda George do multipacks of tops and leggings. Go for dark colours and patterned (hides stains better that won't come out in the wash)

gogohm · 12/04/2022 22:55

Supermarkets, primark, charity shops. Check with the nursery, some have nursery t shirts or polo shirts, and at the one that met in my old work the girls wore check dresses in summer

DyingForACuppa · 13/04/2022 11:16

@NerrSnerr

We didn't have special nursery clothes, they just wore every day clothes. Nursery clothes didn't get more ruined at nursery than being in the garden or the park.
This. I wouldn't send precious irreplaceable clothes to nursery, but I wouldn't bother getting stuff especially for it. I too heard tales of ruined clothes, but I've had maybe one top ruined ever (and the nursery were very apologetic that they hadn't noticed DC had pulled up painting overall and was decorating their light coloured clothes). We did send our own food in though and I didn't send in messy food, so maybe that makes a difference.
dannydyerismydad · 13/04/2022 12:31

Keep her standard shoes. Just make sure they are well named.

Bout a decent puddle suit, wellies and sun hat. For clothes anything that's easy to move about it, that is easy to wash and you won't mind getting mucky. You may be able to pick up a bundle from eBay or from an NCT sale. Otherwise multipacks of joggers/leggings/tops are handy.

Kitkat151 · 13/04/2022 12:48

Buy cheap wellies....if you don’t get much bad weather for a few months ....they won’t be worn...then they will have outgrown them and you will be buying more

areyoubeingserved1985 · 13/04/2022 12:55

For nursery my son was in primark/supermarket trousers and poloshirts. Red jumpers from matalan and had a couple of red nursery ones with logo, black gym shoes from the supermarket and wellies from primark. He had about 2 complete changes and his wellies stayed there in a bag personalised.

Even now at school he has a change as his school love outside learning and he attracts dirt.

tiredmummy198 · 13/04/2022 13:00

We have a nursery uniform, a basic pair of trousers for each day, and basic tops / jumpers. Primark or supermarket are good and can also pick up bundles on Vinted.

If something gets old or stained at home I also move to nursery drawer to be used there.

LadyMacduff · 13/04/2022 13:03

Supermarket multi packs all the way. I purposefully went for colours and things that I wasn't keen on to avoid feeling annoyed if they got damaged.

Practical, inexpensive shoes as well. They spend all day crawling around on the floor so they get terribly scuffed.

Mummy1608 · 13/04/2022 13:40

Don't think this has been mentioned - dark colours! Even if it's cheap/handmedown stuff, I'm always a bit sad if it gets paint stains on. So dark navy, purple, dark green works best. We get ours mostly from sainsburys or hand me downs. For nice stuff eg birthday dress, sometimes next or m+s, but they're more expensive so not for nursery

MsSquiz · 13/04/2022 13:46

My 2year old lives in Asda leggings, t shirts and trainers for nursery.
She also has hoodies and sweatshirts from H&M, peacocks & primark.
She has a showerproof coat from H&M

We got an all in 1 pac a Mac type thing from Amazon too that can go over whatever she's wearing if they're playing out and getting wet

sleighbellsjiggling · 19/04/2022 09:26

My DD loves primark jeggings, they last really well for £5. They're a nice fit too.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 19/04/2022 10:45

Do NOT bother with cute outfits, or anything you cannot afford to have wrecked and stained.

Primark, H and M, supermarkets. My dd lives in bulk buys of t shirts and leggings for nursery. Often mismatched. She doesnt care, and nor do nursery, as you will find if they have to change her mid way through the day!

She does have a good pair of Start Rite boots over the winter which last, and a decent rain mac coat from M and S.

noscoobydoodle · 19/04/2022 11:04

If she is anything like any of my 3 then she will want to (insist on) choose her own clothes. I used to hide their couple of 'best' outfits in my wardrobe and let them wear what they wanted at nursery and otherwise- provided it was weather appropriate. Its usually hand me downs, ebay or supermarket anyway. Always a couple of full outfit changes in the nursery bag (including socks), a pair of wellies and a couple of spare hats (cap and woolly) as these seem to get lost more. I buy stickin name stickers for everything. We usually have 2 pairs of Clarks type shoes and they just go to nursery in one of those but also sometimes supermarket shoes (peppa pig/frozen/Spiderman trainers) I never sent them in anything i was bothered about but my kids didn't get any more dirty at nursery than at home - often in photos they have coveralls on (school is another matter- they are always filthy!)
