Do you wash the fruits before you give them to your kids?

I mean, you get a pack of strawberries or blueberries.

Do you wash them under running water or just give them to the little ones?

I always wash them to get rid of dust, dirt, soil etc. but then I have seen people that open the pack and start eating them....

If it's something different, like an orange or banana, I don't wash them.

Nope, I open and they get eaten without any harm having come to me or DD. I also commit the cardinal sin of never washing veg either.

AHungryCaterpillar · 28/03/2022 12:58

Not always no as sometimes we eat them when outside and bought from a shop

Not always, doubt it will hurt them

Easymeasy · 28/03/2022 13:02

Yes of course.

MadeForThis · 28/03/2022 13:12

I always wash fruit.

BertieBotts · 28/03/2022 13:13

No, I don't.

babywalker56 · 28/03/2022 13:14

Yes without a doubt

oatlattetogo · 28/03/2022 13:17

I wash them if I’m at home, but I also think it’s unlikely to do any harm eating them without washing. I’ve definitely bought a punnet of strawberries from a supermarket on the way to somewhere and eaten them as part of a picnic.

I’m not sure washing an orange or banana would do much good though, as you’re not eating the skin. Or is that what you meant?

Babyvenusplant · 28/03/2022 13:26

You should wash them, it even says on the packaging 'wash before eating' or similar

Most supermarket fruit is sprayed with chemicals to clean it, I use to have to dip salad and veg in a bleach solution when I worked in a supermarket cafe

Also, the fruit goes through various warehouses and lorries before it gets to the supermarket so just imagine all the germs it encounters on route

Fluffruff · 28/03/2022 13:31

I try to - berries and apples. Sometimes strawberries still have soil on them so I like to give them a rinse.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/03/2022 13:34

I always wash all fruit except bananas. My husband eats orange peel ( weirdo) so I wash those too. Given how many people don't wash their hands after going to the loo, and how many hands food passes through on its way to us, it seems a sensible precaution.

Donkeywonk · 28/03/2022 13:34

Having worked in places packing fruit for supermarkets, I'd definitely wash before eating

carefullycourageous · 28/03/2022 13:35

Yes always.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/03/2022 13:36

Don't wash melon either. Did see recently though that anything you cut should be washed as germs on the skin can be transferred to the flesh.

Babadook76 · 28/03/2022 13:37

Never washed a fruit in my life, and I never intend to.

A580Hojas · 28/03/2022 13:37

Yes, always wash everything thoroughly. They are covered in fertiliser and insectiside (if not organic).

sweepeep · 28/03/2022 13:37

Most pesticides will be removed with just water however if you want to clean fruit and veg better then a salt water (2-3%) solution is best.

liveforsummer · 28/03/2022 13:38

I try to but wouldn't bother if it was forgotten or make a fuss if dc helped themselves and forgot. Sometime I'll buy them to eat in the park or whatever though then they can't be washed. Hasn't seemed to have done me/us any harm

liveforsummer · 28/03/2022 13:38

It's not just in the outside of the fruit though so doesn't help much
FlowerPower4 · 28/03/2022 13:38

Yes I always wash fruit

PatterPaws · 28/03/2022 13:38

I always wash fruit and veg, including lemons, melon etc. where you don't eat the peel.

Berries and salad veg are heavily sprayed with pesticides. It's just common sense to rinse them and doesn't take very long.

liveforsummer · 28/03/2022 13:39

Waiting for the soaking in Milton crowd to come along soon and shame us though 😆

Odile13 · 28/03/2022 13:41

Yes, I wash fruit before I give it to anybody.

Blossom64265 · 28/03/2022 13:41

Yes, I wash my fruits and vegetables. I don’t relish eating a cocktail of pesticides and chemical fertilizer. Not to mention the risk of e-coli or other bacteria that are easily spread by mass commercial processing.
