Party bag alternatives??

Emily6457 · 10/03/2022 20:45

My daughter is turning 5 soon.

I’m looking for alternatives to the usual plastic junk in party bag?

I can only think of sweets (we usually end up chucking them too!) or books.

Just been to a party and they sent home seeds and a plant pot, which I thought was brilliant.

Any ideas much appreciated? Particularly cheap and easy.

Also the party is Lion King themed, so bonus points for anything that fits with that!! Xx

One of my kids just got one of those colour in yourself canvas bags with the colouring pens and a few sweets in which I thought was a good idea.

I thought I might do magic painting books with a paintbrush as my kids love them and they don’t make a mess.

Books from the works is good at that age. They are really cheap.

Books

I would just get them a Lindt bunny each.

Coffeesnob11 · 10/03/2022 20:52

I did a glass killer jar (£1 each from asda) with a all in one cookie mix in layers and a paper bag of pic n mix. Everyone made the cookies and tagged me in the photos.

Small craft set from wilko or hobbycraft

My dd turns 5 soon.
For her party bags I've gone for the colour your own canvas bags from the works (£1), some felt tips from the works (£1) and a flip sequin writing book from tiger tiger (£1)

We did sticker books last year.

BigDogLittleDog · 10/03/2022 21:15

I used this amazing company to do my 5 year olds parry earlier this year as their big thing is less waste and no plastic toot...they've got some great alternative ideas for party bags and also games including amazing no waste pass the parcel

I hated the plant pot gift tbh. It was a bit of trend round here. My boys were never going to plant the seed and grow the plant. We never had compost and it just sat about until I eventually binned it.

A book and a slice of cake it good option. Or a sweet cone.

InDubiousBattle · 10/03/2022 21:17

Hobbycraft are doing paint your own suncatchers for £1.30 each at the minute.

Baboutheocelot · 10/03/2022 21:19

I’ve gone with bath bombs, some bubbles and some sweets. Really they just want sweets/choc. I might send them home with a balloon too.

Scarby9 · 10/03/2022 21:20

I am 60.
When I was in primary school, I used to go to our next door neighbour's daughter's parties.
I still remember the brilliant take home gifts from different years:

  • choice of I spy book
  • choice of flowering pansy in a pot
  • choice of hair bobbles
  • colouring sticker book - choice of topic (mine was ballet).
NuffSaidSam · 10/03/2022 21:23

I'd either go sweets/choc and cake only or one good quality item (book, sticker book, colouring book and/or good pens).

Buying cheap stuff that won't last/they don't actually want/can't be used is no better than plastic tat.

The environmental impact of canvas bags and cheap felt tips isn't going to be much different from a few throwaway plastic toys.

Amammai · 10/03/2022 21:25

Pound shop notebook and pens/gel pens. You might find animal note books. I figured everyone uses pen and paper at some point!!

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 10/03/2022 21:26

My DD received one recently and it had a small activity book, a themed pen, small bubbles and a cartoon rubber. Then a slice of cake and a small pack of harbour sweets. It was a hit with the kids.

Absolutesuperstar · 10/03/2022 21:27

Water bottle filled with sweets is a good one. Cookie jar is also a great idea.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 10/03/2022 21:27

Haribo*

flashpaper · 10/03/2022 21:29

A slice of cake (wrapped in a cheap crappy napkin obviously) and a sweet cone.
I wouldn't do anything that has to have parental involvement. I know I'd never have baked cookies or painted anything with my DC.

Emily6457 · 10/03/2022 21:31

Some great ideas here!
Thank you so much x

Sweets or something edible, like an Easter egg/ chocolate bunny/ cupcake.

I'm a bit snobby about cheap books from big sets- they're normally crap stories imo. Ditto the plastic tat, which I accept most children love...it goes in the bin soon.

For our parties I go to a charity shop and buys loads of children's books ,wrap them all up and put them in a lucky dip box.so when the kids all leave they all get to choose a random book and get handed a slice of cake, cheap as chips and so much better than a bag full of plastic crap 😁🥳
