Black poo in babies

Black poo?

Or is it really really dark green. I'm not sure.

My 7 month old has had poos this color for maybe the last 2 days. Probably maybe 3 poos that have been dark. He's is perfectly fine and happy in himself except from a little cold. These poos have been explosions.

I was going to wait and see what his nappies like tomorrow before I contact someone.

Is it black (see someone tonight) or dark green (unlikely to be a problem)? Very different.

magicstars · 04/03/2022 20:29

Best you call 111.

How is he otherwise? Any temp?
Not meaning to worry you unnecessarily but if it is black poo, that can be a serious tummy/ digestive issue i believe. Needs urgent treatment.

AndSoFinally · 04/03/2022 20:30

Black, offensive poo needs looking at urgently.

Black poo could be a bleed high up in the gastric track or a liver or blood problem. Green could be an infection. If it’s black I’d get on the home to 111

JustWonderingIfYou · 04/03/2022 20:34

Has he eaten lots of spinach- that can do very dark green poop

pinkpolkas · 04/03/2022 20:38

You may think it's gross but if you have a pic to post might help? I agree if it's black then you should call 111

wingingit987 · 04/03/2022 20:39

Sorry to to this but these are the photos it's not as dark as the picture. Itself.

Maybe I'll call 111

You definitely need to seek medical advice tonight.

KatieKat88 · 04/03/2022 20:45

Lots of raspberries can make poo darker (freaked me out with DD once!) so could be down to what he's been eating, but definitely worth a call to 111 if only to put your mind at rest!

endofthelinefinally · 04/03/2022 20:45

I agree 111. But what has he eaten over the last 4 days? Anything new? Any medicine?

endofthelinefinally · 04/03/2022 20:46

111 will ask you, so have a think.

forlornlorna · 04/03/2022 20:46

Hi op. Is your baby on any medications?

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 04/03/2022 20:47

I would defo call 111

wingingit987 · 04/03/2022 21:01

No medications

He had been eating the Ella kitchen long finger puffs, we have the purple pouches and the red ones. We use those purple Wafers. He's been having porridge and this eve he had spat bowl.

I'm waiting for a call back now. Except form his cold he has been completely fine otherwise.

wingingit987 · 04/03/2022 21:03

Yesterday he had some calpol but that's nothing he hasn't had before.

pinkpolkas · 04/03/2022 21:15

It does look quite dark. Hopefully it's nothing but I do think you've done the right thing by calling.

endofthelinefinally · 04/03/2022 21:16

What purple wafers do you mean? (wondering about purple food colouring/beetroot).

ohidoliketobe · 04/03/2022 21:17

The purple pouches have prunes in, that could be the culprit but I'd keep chasing the call back to be on safe side

Then he's been having the purple pouches from Lidl. But not everyday. He had one Tuesday, he may of had one yesterday I can't remember completely

SuperSocks · 04/03/2022 21:20

Prune pouches would explain the explosiveness. I don't think you need to worry OP as he seems fine in himself. HOWEVER it's advised you seek urgent medical advice after black poo for a reason, so please do!

dewisant2020 · 04/03/2022 21:22

As a registered nurse id urge you to seek medical advice tonight from the 111 service, black stool can indicate a GI bleed

endofthelinefinally · 04/03/2022 21:28

Well blueberries cause very dark/black poo, but I guess he would have to eat a LOT of wafers.
Melaena (black poo due to bleeding) is tarry, sticky and has a very strong, really offensive smell and your photo doesn't really look like it, but it is always better to call 111 to be on the safe side.

Tee20x · 04/03/2022 21:30

My DD had a few instances of really dark poo. I think like others have said it can be caused by fruits etc. Does he take any supplements as I'm sure I was told that iron from multivitamins can cause this?

I'm sure it will be nothing to worry about but good that you've called 111 for reassurance.

MumUndone · 04/03/2022 21:31

Does he have formula? My DS had dark green poo and it went away when I changed the formula I was using.
