We eat a lot of spicy food - mainly curries. This has led to dd not eating the same food as us (me especially) as we have it pretty spicy indeed (me especially). I occaisionally tried her with a touch of chilli and she wasn't keen. But I am so used to it - I can't taste it until it's pretty strong.

Some South Asian friends did tell me that their kids were on full strength by 3. DD is now 2.5, and I fear she will never be able to eat the same food and I will have to eat a lot of bland dinners if we all want to eat together.

Anyone else successfully introduced chilli into thier child's diet? If so how, and at what age?

I hope it's genetic - doesn't seem to be so far though. DD has a VERY sweet tooth and I don't at all - that's her father's genes though I think.

My bfather and family are all chilli fiends - but they are Pakistani so who knows. But I grew up on bland food and always hated it. So who knows.

I'll make you a nice dalh instead. (So hungry - and it's HOURS to dinnertime...)

I thought I was the only one to carry a bottle of chilli sauce in my handbag! Yep, DH and I put chillis in everything, tuna sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes etc etc.

And i we also get chilli cravings if we've had non-spicy food for a day or two!

I personally am not trying to force my DD to eat spicy food (am sure none of you are trying to force your DC's either but hope you know what i mean), I just make our normal food and let her eat what she likes. Am sure with time she will develop a tolerance to spicy food and we'll all be eating the same meals. DS at 20 months i think is far too young to have anything hot although i do make him spicy dahl and rice which he loves. (i put in all the normal spices but just leave out the chillis powder).

I just wander what Asian families do. Are village mums in India cooking separate bland meals for their toddlers? I tried asking my bsis about this but never got a good answer -she's in the US now and her boys prefer pizza etc. I must email my SIL and see what she's done.

I feel guilty for continuing to have different food to dd a lot of the time - as though I were undermining our family life by not tolerating more collective bland meals.

i'm making a curry for myself for tea.

a madras, of course.

I could eat my own fingers right now. I'm so hungry (tries to focus on resolution to lose a few pounds). Especially with a little lime pickle. And a nice chianti.

Would it be OT to put a drop of The Sauce in a cup of tea...

Well (insert lip-smacking & finger -licking), that was a dam fine curry if I say so myself. So good, I finished dh's as well (hmmmm, this NY resolution to lose a few pounds is not going well...).

My DS would not eat anything spicey but DD and DB will and do. I did give DS1 spicey food as a baby but he does not like anythign like that now. DD and DB eat what we are eating and I just put a portion aside for them and add more spice to ours if we want it fairly hot.

Dh and I loves our curries and spicy foods. Birdseye chillis are a staple ingredient in our cooking and we don't do wussy thing like de-seed them.

Dd won't go near spicy food. But then again, she doesn't go near much food at home, spicy or not. Fussy eater. But that is a different story ...
