How much did your 6-7 month old move around?

DD is 6.5 months and is pretty stationary. She can roll front to back but doesn't do it often and has never rolled back to front. When lying on her tummy she sort of kicks her legs and moves her arms as if swimming but doesnt go anywhere. She sits unaided and is pretty content just staying still playing with her feet or toys.

My pal has just sent me a few videos of her DD who was born only 2 days before her and OMG. She rolls all over the room and can bum shuffle herself a good few meters!

I googled and found that by 7 months she should be able to get around a bit so I'm panicking somewhat.

Has anyone else had a late mover and it's been fine or should I contact the HV?

My friend's son barely moved until he was 10 months, crawled at a year and walked after 18 months. He's perfectly adept at walking now that he's 7 :) there's a huge range of normal. My DD only ever rolled once in each direction. If your child can sit unaided and roll a bit I wouldn't worry.

LydiaFTM · 01/03/2022 13:29

Please don't worry, all babies are different. My 6.5 month old does roll both ways and can spin round 360 degrees on his front but that's about it so far. But there is such a wide range of what is 'normal'. I'm sure she will catch up.

Do you do many exercises to encourage rolling? Plenty of tummy time?

SouthParkCovid · 01/03/2022 13:33

Mine is 8 months and exactly the same! Sounds very normal op.

My niece was exactly where your DD is at this age. My little girl was moving much earlier, but i think that's because she has an older sibling she is trying to keep up with. Is your pal's baby around older children a lot by any chance? :)

Honestly I think they work on whatever is important to them at the time, and some babies prefer fine motor skills first. They certainly all get there so no need to worry. I actually wish my little one had stayed less mobile for a bit longer because it is exhausting once they are crawling!

HalfWomanHalfHobnob · 01/03/2022 13:35

Um, not at all. Didn't roll until 8 months, didn't crawl until 10 months. Started walking at 13 months and is now a perfectly normal 2.5 year old. Don't panic! Some babies just prefer to watch the world go by.

StrawberryLadybird · 01/03/2022 13:44

My friend has a 2.5 year old son as as well, so yes baby is often around him and his friends too I imagine!

We try and do lots of tummy time but tbh she gets frustrated after too long.

Thanks for the reassurance all - I will try not to worry!

Mine was commando crawling at 4 months and crawling on all 4's by 7 months. He was a very very active baby and still is a hyperactive toddler which is exhausting for me as he does not sit down. Mine put importance in his physical milestones and not so much on social and communication which is why he is delayed in speech. Every baby is different and they come in all different personalities as I've seen the stationary babies doing the same thing as ds now but are very advanced in speech as well!

silkypillows · 01/03/2022 13:49

DS1 didn't crawl until he started walking a week after his first birthday. He just sat around demanding things out with his reach.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 01/03/2022 13:53

DS was greased lightening. Crawling, acruising, pulling up- total nightmare.

buckingmad · 01/03/2022 18:16

Mine is 7 months and has been sitting up unaided for about 2-3 months but has yet to roll properly. She can also now bum shuffle a fair bit.

My sister bum shuffled but never crawled. Babies are all different!

CornishGem1975 · 01/03/2022 18:17

Bloody tons and he was walking by 10 months but my others were slow at everything - one didn't walk until 20 months.

DockOTheBay · 01/03/2022 18:19

Its fine. My oldest could just sit at that age, she could roll but didn't much. My youngest on the other hand was crawling at 5.5 months. I wouldn't be concerned at this age but you could speak to the health visitor just for peace if mind.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 01/03/2022 18:24

Dd1 crawled at 8 months
Ds crawled at 7 months (and walked at 8! Shock)
Dd2 bum shuffled at almost 11 months until then shown absolutely no interest in moving at all.
That are all different op don’t worry!

Footnote · 01/03/2022 18:28

One child moved a lot. The other was a big placid teddy bear who just sat and smiled. From 15 months up you couldn’t have said which was which.

Dogsandbabies · 01/03/2022 18:33

First crawled at 6 months and walked at 10. Second crawled at 5 months and walked at 8. My third didn't crawl until 10 months and walked a month later. They go at their own pace. It's normal to worry but she sounds pretty normal.

Equally my first spoke at 9 months but second didn't say much until he was over 2. They catch up quickly once the manage it.

Clockbookbeast · 01/03/2022 18:34

All dc are different.
My 3dc all rolled at 3 months and by 4 months could all get around by rolling. However none walked before a year old, one never crawled.
My siblings dc1 didn't roll till 18 months but just got up at 10 months and walked (having not been mobile at all). The second dc crawled at about 10 months and was walking by 11months.
If your dc is content to sit and play they don't really have a need to move (I found my youngest two were mobile earlier wanting to get to older sibling). Try putting things slightly out of reach that always encourages them (just make sure you're close by to catch incase they they fall.

Daffythedill · 01/03/2022 18:36

Both of mine were late movers. Didn't crawl until a year and didn't walk until 18 months. Both primary age now and never sit still.

The main issue of concern IIRC was if they can't weight bare. If your DC can sit unaided and raise their head doing tummy time, then it looks positive.

RedHelenB · 01/03/2022 18:43

Mine all crawled just shy of 6 months but that was very unusual amongst their peer group. Quite a few weren't mobile or rolled over.

AliceW89 · 01/03/2022 18:49

Not at all. If I remember correctly, he could roll both ways by 7 months but never did. Never crawled or bum shuffled - was effectively completely static until walking at 15 months. Now doesn’t stop moving at 21 months and finally learnt how to crawl a week or so ago (only 1 year late 😬)

Svara · 01/03/2022 18:54

Crawling (all fours) at 5 months, crawling up the stairs, cruising, and sitting unassisted at 6 months. They are all different!

Chely · 01/03/2022 19:03

Ours will be 7 months next week, she can sit up but not for ages. Hits and grabs stuff. Absolutely fascinated by her hands and likes watching the rest of the family. She will shuffle round on her back in her cot. She can roll front to back but not back to front. She likes to pull herself to her feet when holding our hands, not using furniture to do it yet but can hold on if we place her on her feet next to it. She is a big and heavy baby so I think that does slow some development down, all our others were crawling at 8mth and walking unaided by 12mth.

helpmum2003 · 01/03/2022 19:09

My dc never rolled or crawled and was stationary until walked at 16 months. Has been absolutely fine so don't worry!

Vicky1989x · 01/03/2022 19:19

I wouldn’t worry, my DD was only rolling front to back at that age and that was only to get out of tummy time! Didn’t roll back to front until 8.5 months and didn’t crawl until 10.5 months.

jupitermars1345 · 01/03/2022 19:44

Mines 9 months almost
Sat unaided at 7.5 months
Rolled back to front at 8.5 months
Rarely rolls front to back so she isn't mobile at all ATM.
My first didn't roll really and didn't crawl until 12 months so was not mobile for a whole year

They are all different

HumunaHey · 01/03/2022 19:52

DS2 willnot keep still. He will do several rolls ina row and pull himself over to things. Constantly waking in his cot due to rolling.

DS1,on the other hand, could not get from one point to another at that age. Even more worringly, when he began to "crawl" at around 10months, it was very lopsided. His left leg seemed to lag while he did a kind of stepping motion with the right. We sought medical advice numerous times.

He's 3.5 now and very bright. He's also a very fast runner. No cognitive/physical issues/delay at all.
