Baby Formula

Hi all!

My little girl is 13 weeks and takes 6oz every 4 hours.
We use the kendermill formula and make it by boiling fresh water each feed, letting it cool for 30 minutes in the kettle, make the bottle then leave it an hour to come down to room temperature so baby can have it.

Has anyone done the 3oz of cool boiled water and 3oz of boiling water to make the feed?
Even when baby is sleeping I'm having to be up every couple of hours to boil the kettle then to make the bottle then waiting for it to cool.
Having to be up 1.5 hours before the feeds even due is really tiring me out.. all my sisters have done it but I'm reluctant as she can be quite sicky

Hi. Yes I make bottles like this often

I’m a maternity nurse

I find 1/3 to 2/3 is about right temp

I have two flasks, one with boiling water, one with cold previously boiled water

If making 6oz bottle, 2oz boiling, add 6 scoops, swirl, add 4oz cold

Perfect temp bottle made safely in a minute or so

coffeelover13 · 25/02/2022 21:44

Not sure what to suggest. We use a prep machine that makes the milk for you in 1 minute. Never had any issues x

Duracellbunnywannabe · 25/02/2022 21:46

You need to use water around 70c as the ‘hot shot’ part. 70c will kill any ‘bugs’ but any higher will compromise some of the nutrients. It’s fine to add water around 70c, mix and then add cooled boiled water.

It's fine to make bottles like that, I would do 2oz boiling water with six scoops and shake thoroughly, then add 4oz of cooled boiled water. It's important to measure the 4oz of cold water, rather than just topping up the bottle to the 6oz mark as you won't have enough water and the feed will be too concentrated.
You can also make up the whole feed with boiling water and cool it under running water or in a bowl of iced water which will cool the feed down a lot quicker than just leaving it to come to room temp.

OliviaL9530 · 25/02/2022 21:54

@NannyR thank you! We use the mam anti colic bottles so unfortunately can't sit the bottle in water as it has air holes punctured in the base 😭 x

Get yourself a formula kettle!

uneeqbaby.com/collections/multi-functional-formula-kettle

Water ready to go at the right temp, cool standing in water from the fridge, only a few mins start to finish

OliviaL9530 · 25/02/2022 21:57

@Blondeshavemorefun

Fantastic thank you!

Does adding the formula to the boiling water compromise the nutrients or does it not matter given you're adding the cook boiled immediately after?

This would save my life haha

Make your days bottles and store in the fridge. Make each one with formula and 4oz boiled water. Then get one out each time you need one and top up with freshly boiled to 6oz. The bottles last 24hr in the fridge.
You absolutely do not need to be carrying on as your are! Alternatively, get a perfect prep machine. Total game changer;

OliviaL9530 · 25/02/2022 22:01

@Lockdownmummy

Oh my god! Look at this. This would literally solve all my problems! How does it work?

OliviaL9530 · 25/02/2022 22:03

@smooshraspberry

I thought the bottles only lasted 2 hours or is this just once they're made?

I suppose you're only making half the bottle then completing it when adding the boiled water and formula

A top paed who works at Portland said it wouldn’t make that much diff

Better to have boiling to know no bacteria , rather then possibly killing off some of the good bacteria

If that makes sense

Sackofnickles · 25/02/2022 22:04

Yes, I do it for every feed and use kendamil.

Getting up 1.5hrs before a feed is bloody crazy. Stop it and sleep!!

Lockdownmummy · 25/02/2022 22:05

@OliviaL9530 I love mine! Fill the kettle and you select the temp you want it to hold the water at. It boils the water then cools to the temperature you selected and holds it there.

So fill mine, boils and stays at 70°C for as long as you want. It's really easy to use and has lasted for DS and DD.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 25/02/2022 22:06

The MAM anti colic bottles have a rubber base over the holes, you can sit them in hot or cold water. I was making bottles in advance when we were away last week and then just heating them in boiling water, a soup Tupperware is actually great for heating/cooling bottles.

HPmagic · 25/02/2022 22:10

Hi op I have a 10 week old and we also use kendamil.

I too have been making my feeds fresh each time and using boiled water immediately however I then place my bottle into a jug of cold tap water and it cools down within 15minutes to a drinkable temperature.

I usually anticipate the next feed and do this in advance. At night times when baby stirs (I put the dummy in) I will make a bottle and place the jug of cold water beside my bed with bottle in and go back to sleep, baby usually stirs properly within the hour and so bottle has not been sitting for ages and is ready to drink. Or alternatively if DH is doing work late downstairs he will bring up a bottle for me in the jug to cool.

I would never premake the bottles for the fridge because the milk smells horrible after a few hours.

I have said I use a jug but actually it's a protein shaker cup thing.

HPmagic · 25/02/2022 22:11

I use mam bottles also

Fleur405 · 25/02/2022 22:14

We had to give our son prescription formula and the dietician advised us to make up 24 hours worth at a time. We bought a big plastic jug with a lid that we could sterilise and made up 24 hours in. Allow to cool and then store in the fridge and throw away any you haven’t used within 24 hours. It was much easier than making up individual bottles!

EllieQ · 25/02/2022 22:19

Surely waiting for 30 minutes after the kettle boils means the water is not hot enough to kill any germs?

I used to make the bottle using boiling water (from a kettle that had boiled a few minutes earlier), then sit it in an ‘ice bath’ - a measuring jug filled with ice cubes and cold water to cool it down to a drinkable temperature. It didn’t take an hour, that’s ridiculous!

If you can’t sit the bottle in cold water directly, why not put it in a plastic bag like a food storage bag, then put it in cold water?

OliviaL9530 · 25/02/2022 22:24

@EllieQ

Great idea with the storage bags! Never thought of that haha

I've no idea, I've just always followed the instructions on the back of the tin and that's what it says 🙄 x

OP posts:
Lockdownmummy · 25/02/2022 22:30

@OliviaL9530 @EllieQ 'ideally' you want water that has been boiled and then cooled a bit but is still 70°C or above to kill any bacteria in the powder.Guidance has to be generic enough for everybody so it's fill the kettle with 1L of water, boil and leave for 30 mins which would leave the water somewhere over 70.

But do use common sense and adapt to your needs to make it as quick as possible. Our regular kettle as a display to tell you the temp of the water so when I have had to use it I've boiled it and then opened the lid so it cools quicker and kept an eye on the temp.

CoffeeAndCaramel · 25/02/2022 22:36

Hi OP
I also use kendamil and mam bottles. I used to make fresh every time with my first two, now on baby number 3 and I have been doing it the old school way, sterilise and make all bottles in the morning, rapid cool then pop in back of fridge, heat when needed, it's so much easier x

poorlybaby · 25/02/2022 23:10

Get a perfect prep machine - makes bottle in 2 mins at the right temp for the number of ozs you make. You 100% won't regret it!

newyearsresolurion · 25/02/2022 23:14

"The MAM anti colic bottles have a rubber base over the holes, you can sit them in hot or cold water."
Exactly!! I have these bottles and that's what I do! But am liking the idea of hot water then cooling straight away with boiled cold water. It's quicker!

newyearsresolurion · 25/02/2022 23:16

Great thread! Am learning

Itsnotover · 25/02/2022 23:16

Seriously, get a Tommee Tippee Perfect prep machine. Best money I’ve ever spent!
