Vaccines, Unwell 9 Week Old Baby, HELP!

Hello,
This is my second post in probably as many days. I have a 9 week old baby girl. She had her vaccinations on Thursday last week. Since Thursday last week she has had a temperature of between 37.4 and 38.6 throughout the day and night. Calpol was giving Thursday before vaccinations & two doses after. This continued till sunday as the temperature persisted. On Monday I rang the GP. We was seen he put it down to vaccinations told us not to come back until the end of the week if she was not settled. & to give calpol if required.

These are the things I am worried about;

  • temp of 37.4 to 38.6 throughout the day and night along with sweating/clammy/hot to touch/red etc
  • dip in the amount of feeds (breastfed) not feeding as regularly or as often or for as long. When trying to feed she is very fussy, cries, latching and unlatching, appears upset
  • appears to be much more sleepy, sleeping for longer periods day & night, sleepy throughout the day, less awake time
  • when she is awake she appears unsettled, fussy, crying, not content at all
  • since this morning she has now started to be sick after each feed, enough to have to change her clothes & my top & wipe the floor a bit

Am I just being an over anxious over cautious first time mum or do I have valid reason to worry? The GP has said he won't see us until Friday as he has said this is all related to the vaccinations but I am so worried. I keep thinking there is something wrong with her and that this can't all still be related to the vaccines but how would I know as a first time mum

I’d be asking for a second opinion. I’ve never heard of a baby suffering that long from their first vaccines.

BrilloSolar · 23/02/2022 22:33

Babies may become unwell / catch something AND coincidentally have their vaccines around the same time. Trust your instincts and get her checked. Ring 111 at the very least.

Hope all is ok

Cheesybiscuits01 · 23/02/2022 22:48

As in 6 nearly 7 days ago? Baby still having temperatures? I would seek second opinion now. Can you call 111?

Yes I agree it sounds worrying. I don’t think you should have waited the time since speaking to the gp until now to do something more for your baby but you can’t change that now. I agree that you need to call 111. The increased sleepiness really is a concern so long after the vaccinations. Please speak to someone tonight

Pru19 · 23/02/2022 23:01

In future OP, trust your gut xx

HiKelsey · 23/02/2022 23:12

Are you still giving calpol OP?

Try going to your local tesco pharmacy and getting their own brand paracetamol. I have a little one with allergies and a lot get unsettled with calpol, so stomach ache, sickness, refluxy and slight temperature. I'd definitely get little one checked out by out of hours though, it's not fair for little one or you for her to be this unsettled. Your gut is telling you what's right and you're worrying for a reason x

Choconuttolata · 23/02/2022 23:22

Please take her to A&E fever in a very young baby that many days after vaccination needs a full investigation. They will need to do blood tests to rule out a possible infection.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 23/02/2022 23:30

I’m quite calm and practical when it’s comes to the children being unwell.

If that was my baby? I’d be at A&E.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/02/2022 23:34

It may still be from the vaccination...but I'd be pretty uncomfortable making that assumption, especially as it's a couple of days since the GP assessed (and even more especially as it sounds like that assessment may have been done over the phone?) Sounds like the safest option is a face to face assessment tonight. Personally I'd be going with A&E.

tothemoonandbackbuses · 23/02/2022 23:35

I hope you’ve either rung 111 or taken her to a&e
When my older baby had a reaction to a vaccine (hard lump on leg at vaccine site) the nurse at the surgery saw her checked her over and explained exactly what circumstances I needed to call an ambulance and what circumstances to bring her back to the surgery and to ring if I was at all worried.

MaverickSnoopy · 24/02/2022 00:05

I agree. Mum of 3 here. That's a long time to leave such a little one with a temp. The GP can't be sure the vaccinations are the reason. I'm a Childminder and we always exclude children after vaccinations if they get a temp as standard and say we can't be sure the temp is from the vaccination and not a bug. Sometimes it's a coincidence. I would call 111 or take her to a&e.

aaliyahMoieenAmelia2021 · 24/02/2022 00:26

Thank you all for your responses. We was seen face to face by the GP who told us this was totally normal. I didn't wait until now to act I was seen by a GP on Monday, I telephoned 111 yesterday & was told to seek GP advice, which I did again yesterday & I was told by the GP that he had already assessed her & would not see us again until Friday. I guess my next option is A&E. Thank you all for taking the time to respond it's quite difficult as a first time mum when you have qualified professionals telling you it's normal or not to worry when you seek advice and help. I will take everything said on board thank you

Defo A&E ASAP, hope all is OK.

ChocDonuts · 24/02/2022 01:41

She has sicked up every feed today?

A&E now

Poppy709 · 24/02/2022 07:26

Hi OP, agree with others - a&e. Your GP has been very remiss leaving you a week with a baby that young with fevers that high. I was told the fevers from men b jab last 48 hours max. Hope you’ve been to hospital and baby is ok xx

Cheesybiscuits01 · 24/02/2022 12:49

Hi OP, how is your baby today?

aaliyahMoieenAmelia2021 · 24/02/2022 15:12

Hello,
Thank you again for all of your responses. We went to A&E they took her temperature which was 38.4, they gave her calpol, took it again 4 hours later were it was 36.8 and sent us home. They have said they are putting it down to the vaccinations. They wouldn't do any further investigation. We are about to go back as today again she has a high temperature, is feeding less & is sleeping a lot more & a week after vaccinations is too long for this to be ongoing. So I am about to take her back

OP posts:
tothemoonandbackbuses · 24/02/2022 15:52

Hope you get it sorted. Just keep going until they investigate properly.

Poppy709 · 24/02/2022 16:32

That is really strange op, in my area a baby under 3 months with a temp over 38 is given full investigations even if it does come down with calpol. My DS had a temp of 38 at 12 weeks and he was given a lumbar puncture and IV antibiotics until they ruled out bacterial causes, it turned out to be a UTI. Don’t worry about being a nuisance, you’re right to push. Hope your little one is feeling better soon xx

Luckyelephant1 · 24/02/2022 16:42

The high temp is worrying enough but the feeding and sleeping changes are quite alarming, I'm surprised they sent you home. At the very least some bloods need to be taken. Glad you are going back in and hope she's OK and that you get some answers.

LittleOwl153 · 24/02/2022 16:47

Is she producing wet and dirty nappies. That is usually an indicator of problems.
Hope you get some more sense from a&e this time. A week on paracetamol can't be doing her any favours- my stomach would be properly messed up by now and I'm not tiny!!

aaliyahMoieenAmelia2021 · 24/02/2022 17:06

Hello,
Thank you all for your input. I keep being told it's a reaction to the vaccines. I am here now so going to push for bloods to be taken at the very least. I'm really struggling as I am so worried about her and no one seems to be listening to me. She doesn't seem well at all to me & I know her best so I wish they would listen to me. I intend to stay here until they at least do bloods and check for any signs of infections. There is clearly something wrong with her. Thank you all again

OP posts:
aaliyahMoieenAmelia2021 · 24/02/2022 17:09

Sorry I didn't answer the question. She does appear to be having wet and dirty nappies which is another reason they keep telling me she is fine. In 24 hours she had two dirty nappies (it looks like diarrhoea) & 5 wet nappies. Which I agree is pretty good for a baby I am stating is unwell but surely they can't just decide she is fine off of her nappies

OP posts:
Poppy709 · 24/02/2022 21:56

So sorry you don’t feel you’re being listened to OP, I really hope you have been seen again and you’ve had some extra checks. It’s great that she is still producing wet and dirty nappies but you’re doing the right thing pushing for bloods xxx
