newborn hair turning orange?

Hi all
I have a gorgeous 5 week old daughter. I have a genuine question about her hair colour, as it’s confusing me. I’m a brunette and my other half is blonde. I have red hair on my side of the family but no red heads on his side, although he has a tiny bit of red in his beard!!!). I strongly felt like our baby would have thick red hair, and when she was born was surprised that she had no red in her hair at all, it was just a browny blonde colour.

It very quickly started changing colour, it’s getting lighter and lighter and now looks orange /red or blonde depending on the light. Some parts are veryyyy gingery then others less so. Some people have commented on how ‘blonde’ her hair is, others have said it looks red!!

I’d be happy either way with blonde or red hair, but at the moment I’m a little worried as whenever I take a photo on my digital camera her hair glows bright orange /yellow and in some lights it looks like she’s had a dodgy hair dye job!!

Have any of your babies had something similar, and what was the outcome?

Attached photos , this is her hair all taken on the same day in different lighting. Crazy as it started a completely different colour a few weeks ago!!!

It looks like right now she just has some red undertones that are being picked up by the camera. It could really go either way.
Dd has red hair, the camera either makes it look bright orange or brown depending on the lighting but in reality she's in the middle of them both.

I would say its Strawberry blonde. Lovely colour.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 28/01/2022 20:38

My daughter was blonde until about three. She then went a deep shade of red. It's just stunning. The sort of colour deep red with subtle gold threads in it that people pay lots of money for. I'd post a pic but she's a teen and won't let me Smile

Thank you 😊 it’s so crazy how much hair can change! My first daughters has gone various shades too, but never as extreme as this baby girl 😀

I really don't see any ginger there at all but then again I'm Scottish so we do have real ginger gingers here. ❤️ She's gorgeous!

Oh wow your dd’s hair is stunning, would be happy if this babies hair turned that colour!!

She definitely has some major red undertones going on 😂 will just have to wait and see what happens.

DD went through a stage of being really quite ginger when she was about 4-5 months. We're both dark haired; DP was blonde as a child and gradually got darker over the years. There's also blond on my side of the family but no gingers either side (though DP doesn't know his dad so who knows).

Anyway, DD quite quickly changed to very light blonde after the ginger stage. She's now in KS2 and has dark blonde hair. Will definitely go brunette like me and DP I think.

Their hair changes so much when they are small. My boy had this black hair, then went blond, now he’s a murky brown.

I love red hair though! The little girl next door to me has the most striking red locks. I’m very jealous

My son has amazing hair

In normal light, it’s basically pale brown or kind of a mousy auburn

In sunlight it’s fiery red at times.

I think red hair is so interesting- definitely got darker over time - because when he was born it really was bright bright red, before falling out and coming in a mellower tone when he was about six months old.

He really loves it, he’s 13.

And in case you’re secretly worrying - he has literally never heard a negative comment from anybody. And he goes to quite a macho school where the kids take the piss out of everything.

ThirdElephant · 28/01/2022 20:50

Probably just red undertones. I had this with DD- she looked ginger in all her baby pictures.

Oh wow, I never realised that could even happen with hair. Sounds gorgeous and very unique, lucky girl! My preteen would be the same, in fact she’s now decided that she hates her hair colour and is begging me to die it bright red for her!

Ooh she does look like a redhead, her brows and lashes fit too. But they change so much at this stage, she's gorgeous!

AdamRyan · 28/01/2022 20:54

My DD had hair just like that as a baby, now it's natural colour is a gorgeous warm brown with gold highlights - the sort of thing that people pay ££ for in highlights. She dyes it dark brunette Confused. Apparently she gets teased for being ginger. Makes me sad Sad

Santahasjoinedww · 28/01/2022 20:58

My dd was born with brown hair. One day I actually accused her siblings of drawing on her brows with orange pen!
It went ginger... And her name is is a version of the colour red!! Oops!

So glad to hear your son loves his unusual hair. I’ve definitely been worrying about her getting teased if she has an unusual shade of red. I absolutely knew she would have crazy hair, in fact me and OH joked about it a lot when I was pregnant!

What a shame - brown hair is so DULL (my husband and I are brown)

Where do you live? I’ve only ever overheard ginger comments in Scotland

We’re in N Wales where nobody cares and you see plenty redheads strutting their stuff

ThirdElephant · 28/01/2022 21:59

@PinchOfVom

Midlands here and definitely saw some anti-ginger bullying in secondary school. It was like they thought it was the only acceptable thing to tease someone for. Lots of really nasty pranks and some outright assaults, unfortunately. Never saw bullying for anything other than being ginger.

M1RR0R · 28/01/2022 22:01

DS3 was strongly orange as a newborn for a few weeks. It all fell out & has grew back white blonde. No doubt it’ll turn brown in a few years (eldest was blonde until he was 2).
Hair colouring is crazy!

AdamRyan · 28/01/2022 22:15

South West pinch

InTheNightWeWillWish · 28/01/2022 22:31

My DDs hair is similar. We’re getting comments about her being strawberry blonde. I’ve no idea how it’ll turn out as she’s 10 weeks old but both DH and I went darker as we got older.

We’ve concluded that babies fall in 3 categories: no hair, strawberry blonde to dirty blonde and jet black. It’s pot luck which one you end up in and often a complete surprise (friends of ours are both very fair but have a baby in the jet black category).

StarlingsAreAmazing · 28/01/2022 22:56

I never see any post from parents asking the same question re blonde/brown. Just red.
