Hi,

DS is 2 years and 3 months old. He has a speech delay but health visitor assured us that his cognitive ability was there and it was just a delay. Recently, he's talking all the time and forming sentences.

He has trouble with pronouncing his words, like this:

Slide: Hide

Blueberry: booby

Dinosaur: d-saw t-tops (triceratops)

But can also say a lot of words crystal clear, though this has taken some time.

When did words become clearer for your little one?

What speech delay does he have @merrygoround23? I thought it was pretty normal to mispronounce some words at this age but I'm happy to be corrected Smile

LuckyWithMyLot · 16/01/2022 17:29

Does he have a speech delay?

He sounds just like my son of the same age and I'm happy with his speech. I wouldn't say he's forming full sentences yet as he doesn't use propositions so it's more like "Max eat soup. Ooh yum" or "up stairs mama" or "Dino come too". He mispronounces loads of words but I know what he means e.g. he says Blooby for blueberry and "bu-ball" for football.

LuckyWithMyLot · 16/01/2022 17:32

*prepositions not propositions ! He's forever making propositions (chocolate for breakfast , skip bath tonight Grin)

Mines just turned 4 and his pronunciation is still pretty bad. You should have heard him trying to get my OH understand him saying testicles today. He asked me what they were called today.

blyn · 16/01/2022 17:52

He sounds OK to me.

merrygoround23 · 16/01/2022 17:54

Health visitor said he had a speech delay, he didn't utter a word until 26 months

What speech delay does he have. Its perfectly normal for a child his age to mispronounce words or miss out some sounds in a word, it's a normal part of speech development.

Cross posted. So he's been talking for only 1 month?

In which case he sounds like he is making exceptionally good progress.

merrygoround23 · 16/01/2022 17:56

Thanks everyone, feeling reassured now. Nursery had made a SALT referral without my consent because he wasn't hitting their speech markers. His health visitor contacted us after being alerted by the nursery and she told us he likely had a speech delay, but she thought the words would come as his cognitive ability seemed perfectly fine.

Fast forward two months to now and he's chatting away, but the words are clear to me, but sometimes others struggle to understand him

If he's gone from zero words to forming sentences in a month he's doing just fine! Some children take longer than others.

My DS is the same age and still mispronounces lots of words. "Daddy-saur" is my favourite.

PushingAnElephantUpTheStairs · 16/01/2022 17:59

It sounds like the delay is that it's taken him longer to say words, it sounds like he's not any different to many others his age pronunciation wise which, considering he's had less practice, is fab!

My youngest is 28 months and blueberries are booberries here. 🙂

Opalfeet · 16/01/2022 18:01

That's normal for others not to understand.

samsalmon · 16/01/2022 18:02

I think when children first start talking OP, they are often only intelligible to their closest carers. I just dug out an old diary my childminder kept of my toddler and I had actually put some ‘mummy translation’ in there for her from time to time 😄 (similar kind of sound ‘errors’ that you’ve listed).

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/01/2022 18:03

Did he have a hearing check?

Mispronuciation is normal. But can also be something like glue ear.

Twonkers · 16/01/2022 18:06

I found the app ‘Speech bubs’ quite useful. Also, ‘Tiny Happy People’ on the BBC website.

My son’s speech only really got going during lockdown (he was three). All credit to Paw Patrol on that one!

Brunilde · 16/01/2022 18:09

He sounds just like my little boy who is 29 months. Nursery and health visitor have both said he's a little behind but he is constantly improving so they aren't too concerned yet. He has a fantastic vocabulary but pronunciation and joining of words is behind. Said they would reassess in Feb to see if a referral is needed. If it is I'm happy for them to do it as it's a little extra help. But all the tips they gave we do already. I'm sure he will get there

BlueSky8 · 16/01/2022 18:10

My DS had a speech delay, 8 months on there's still some words mispronounced.

For seat he says shit 🤣 we're working on that.

If he's only just started talking really I wouldn't worry.

merrygoround23 · 16/01/2022 18:47

Thanks everyone, I panicked when nursery made the referral as he's my first born and I've not been around any other toddlers, then I started panicking that something was up. He's doing so well now, I was desperate to hear his voice after so long. I love his little words

I'd go fir the SLT sessions OP. My DD was a late talker then had some problems with pronunciation. SLT sorted it out very quickly Smile

Exactly the same as my DS. Nursery have been working on his pronunciation a lot which has helped but there are definitely still plenty of words that only I understand. Even DH doesn't get a lot of them. But he never shuts up! I'm not worried either.
Theoldcuriosityshop · 16/01/2022 22:14

My brothers speech was so bad my mum used to stuff him full of biscuits on the bus so no one could hear him. He was still awful when he started school at the age of 5. Mind you this was 65 years ago when people didn't worry so much, he soon started speaking properly at school when he realised no one understood him, he was lazy.

Opalfeet · 16/01/2022 22:46

@Theoldcuriosityshop this is what my four year old is like, I can understand everything he says and he has a good vocab, long sentences etc. Pronunciation is terrible (not all words to be fair and possibly I'm a bit hard on him). Never really crossed my mind to get SALT involved and nursery haven't said anything either 🤷‍♀️. I think he's just lazy too, starting to feel guilty reading this thread that I havent referred him, he knows nearly all his times tables though and is really good at adding up

BluebellsGreenbells · 16/01/2022 22:52

Have they checked his ears? It’s worth asking for this even if they haven’t - they are different departments.

Footnote · 16/01/2022 22:53

My daughter was like this and she has glue ear.

Kirstyr455 · 16/01/2022 23:00

He sounds perfectly normal to me! My 2 year old mispronounces things all the time, its so sweet. Bash instead of bath is my favorite.
