Nearly 3 year old going to the toilet independently?

Am I crazy to think my nearly 3 year old could potentially start using the toilet independently?

She has been potty trained since 20 months & used the toilet (with seat) for 6 months now.

She is able to pull her trousers & knickers up and down independently, and wipe herself after a wee (still needs help after a poo so she would need to shout me).

Is she too young?
If she were to go alone the only thing she struggles to do is get up and down off the toilet independently, even with a step she isn't quite tall enough. Has anyone found a solution to this?

Mine did by 3.5 years, if that helps you at all

Pugroll · 14/01/2022 17:41

I don't think that sounds like it would be overly unusual, of course its not too young if capable of doing it.

SarahJessicaParkin · 14/01/2022 17:46

Not unusually young ime. Assuming you don't mean you'll do the shopping while she takes herself off to the loos in sainsbury Grin

My dc1 was doing this pretty young. The little one still can't be trusted to wash his hands at almost 4yo! But if she can do it, she can do it. Don't know what is "crazy" about it

Mine's been taking himself off since he was trained. Are they not meant to? He says when we're out or at another person's house but at home he just goes by himself and shouts if he needs a hand. They go by themselves at preschool, apparently it's hilarious when someone hides the toilet roll.

ViceLikeBlip · 14/01/2022 17:50

In your own house? Completely normal! Down the pub? Less so.....

Classicblunder · 14/01/2022 17:51

That seems perfectly normal?

Seeline · 14/01/2022 17:52

I assume you've got a step stool for her?

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 14/01/2022 17:53

My son is 3 in March and goes independently m, has been doing so for about a month

JugglingJanuary · 14/01/2022 17:55

Perfectly normal AT HOME

You can put something under the step, we had a couple of kitchen cupboard doors in the garage from a previous kitchen, and a rubber mat to stop it slipping). Just make sure it's big enough so the step won't slip off.

But keep an eye/ear out for not hand washing or flooding the bathroom!

Svara · 14/01/2022 17:56

Ds was taking himself at two and a half, then called out for help with the loo roll for a few months after that.

LittleBearPad · 14/01/2022 17:57

Get a bigger step 🤷‍♀️

LakeShoreD · 14/01/2022 17:58

Mine could manage the loo for a wee at that age on her own but was a total liability with the sink for hand washing so still supervising unless I wanted it to turn into a water table play session!

PinkSyCo · 14/01/2022 18:04

Although not all my children were fully potty trained by your DD’s age I’m pretty sure they were all able to use the toilet independently by 3. I’m surprised your DD can’t reach with a step. Is she very petite?

BlueLace · 14/01/2022 18:24

Thanks everyone. Clearly it's not crazy!

Obviously I meant at home not when out and about.

Think we will have to look at alternative step stools, the one we have is just a standard supermarket one but she can't get up using it.

This one from Safety1st has been great for us, DD has used it to use the loo by herself from 2.5yrs it is very stable, may be worth seeing if its higher than the one you have.

We have that stool too! DD is now 4 and still uses it in the kitchen.

Babyghirl · 14/01/2022 19:12

@BlueLace
I know someone who is 6 and still can't go on there own, and still uses one of them potty training seats on the toilet they r still be babyed but that another story lol.

SquigglePigs · 14/01/2022 19:17

DD was 3 last month. She is perfectly capable but likes to play with the loo roll a bit too much to be completely unsupervised!

Babyghirl · 14/01/2022 19:46

@squigglepigs
Can you put the toilet roll out off her reach and just leave a wee bit out to do her for when she needs to go.

modgepodge · 14/01/2022 19:59

My daughter is almost the same age and also struggles to get up using a supermarket stool, she’s just a little too small. She sometimes takes herself off for a wee on the potty by herself which she can do independently, but the toilet ut will be a while before she can reach I think.

She’s also a fan of unwinding the loo roll and flooding the sink…

Charley50 · 14/01/2022 20:03

My DS went straight from nappy to toilet quite little. I think he did fall and fold on the toilet once (he's 20 now, so memories fade), but he was basically good to go quite early.

Thinkbiglittleone · 14/01/2022 20:29

Ours did at 3, was trained early so more than able then.

He is very small for his age, but with a step he was fine.
We started just saying, ok you go I will be there in 5, then he would shout and we would say, coming in 5, you try until I get there, then before you know it, too bored waiting after 10 mins and just did it himself. Wipes are better than toilet paper to start with.

skkyelark · 14/01/2022 20:47

We have this stool to give a bit more height: www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/trogen-childrens-step-stool-yellow-80371520/. DD moves it back and forth to reach both the toilet and the sink.

And we do keep a careful ear out for sounds of 'hand washing' becoming 'splashing water everywhere'.

Carpetmoth · 14/01/2022 21:03

Most stools aren't worth using. Get a higher one as it makes it so much easier. My mum has a folding one £5 from multiple places inc. Morrisons and B&M (can take an adult weight) but solid ones are available. We have the one my mum had when I was young. They get there in the end.

Mousetruffle · 14/01/2022 21:06

We still joke now about how DS1 always used to announce he was going to the toilet rather than taking himself off for a wee
