When do kids stop waking at the crack of dawn?

DS is 2.5 and wakes at 5 or 5.30 every morning, sometimes earlier. Dd5 sleeps until about 6.

It's been five years since I slept past 7am, when do they ever sleep later?

My teenager never wants to be up before midday.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/01/2022 16:45

When they start staying up all night.

Rockhoppperd · 07/01/2022 16:46

With us it was more that he still woke early but was able to occupy himself until we woke up so we started getting more sleep as he got older.

He’s 13 now and still only sleeps until 8am

Watching! Our eldest is a dream sleeper and goes from 8pm-7.30am every night pretty much. Our youngest: not so much. Wakes every day at 5.15 or so. I'm so tired. I'm hoping he might sleep longer when he drops his nap entirely- have you tried that with your DS? I think it helped our eldest to reach the magic 12 hour stretch!

adoreyou · 07/01/2022 16:52

Dd is newly 6 and is pretty much up at 6 most mornings.... lucky if she sleeps past 7!!
It great for school days as she is up easily. Not so good on weekends and school holidays.
She does go to bed at 7pm though and is usually asleep pretty quick

Petrarkanian · 07/01/2022 16:52

Mine was 13

ajandjjmum · 07/01/2022 16:57

Never if mine are anything to go by! Have to say, they take after their father and not me!

ijustdontknowabout · 07/01/2022 16:59

I dream of a 12 hour stretch at least I would if I had a chance to get to sleep Both my kids only sleep 10 hours.

Earwigworries · 07/01/2022 17:00

About 11-13

Tayegete · 07/01/2022 17:02

DS is 11 and still wakes up 5.30/6 thankfully we no longer need to get up with him. DD always slept in more, and now, at 15 rarely gets up before 11 on a weekend.

stripyleopardsleep · 07/01/2022 17:03

My 11yo still wakes at 6am but requires no input from us now, he entertains and feeds himself. Been like this for a year or two.

hellsbells99 · 07/01/2022 17:04

When they start coming in at the crack of dawn!

Nitw1t · 07/01/2022 17:04

My eldest DS started consistently staying in bed until 7ish just recently. He's about to turn 8.

He was the worst sleeper (up in the night until he was in reception, always a 5am riser until the last year or so)

Can I get back to sleep now I wake up at 5am every morning like clockwork? Nope!! Angry

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 07/01/2022 17:09

It depends on the DC. I have 4, 3 of them woke up early and one woke up late. Now only the youngest wakes up early, he's 10, but I think that's to do with his ADHD.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 07/01/2022 17:18

Mine were old enough to get up without adult supervision before they started sleeping past 7am - my older two were both 14 (years) old before they started having the occasional lie-in, and even then only until about 9am maximum very occasionally after being allowed to stay up as long as they want on a non school night...

My 16 year old has just started longer stereotypical teen lie ins now she's at college.

We introduced marked clocks from the age of 3 and strictly prohibited getting up before 7am at weekends. That works - they were allowed to go to the bathroom and to play in bed with the quiet toys and books kept in their bedrooms, and to switch their audio books on.

Once the youngest is 6 you don't need to get up with them at weekends, though obviously you can't sleep til midday you can lie in til 9 or so IME. Then longer when they're older.

Are you a single parent? Obviously if not then take it in turns...

GrendelsGrandma · 07/01/2022 17:43

Oh no, looks like I have a long few years ahead then!

I have a partner. We take it in turns but currently my toddler kicks up a stink if my partner gets him up, so it's not exactly a relaxing lie in!

12 years old for my eldest but my younger one would always easily sleep until 8am if he wasn't woken.

m030978 · 07/01/2022 18:56

13yr old DS is just getting the hang of sleeping past 7am a few weeks before his 14th birthday!

School will be fun on monday...

Rainallnight · 07/01/2022 18:58

It’s so hard. We’ve actually just started to put ours to bed a bit later to make them sleep later in the morning and it is working.

And we’re waking up the three year old for a wee and a nappy change when we go to bed which is cutting down on the night wakings

Quornflakegirl · 07/01/2022 18:59

We used a Gro Clock with our twins from around age 2 and they knew it was quiet time/stay in cots until the sun came up which was set for 7am. This worked pretty much until they were about 5 and from then they used to wake up around 8 on weekends. They’re 9 now and we don’t hear a peep from them on weekends until 9, sometimes later. Over the Christmas holiday they laid in u till 9:45 a couple of times, bliss!

Matilda1981 · 07/01/2022 19:00

I’ve got 4, age 9,8,3 and 1, during the Christmas holidays they weren’t getting up until 8! Was brilliant, the older two tend to wake the younger two up!!!

Fabuleuse · 07/01/2022 19:01

Mine have been waking around 9.30am over the Christmas holidays, aged 4 and 7. During school time they get up around 7.15-7.45am. We are not a very early to bed family though! They've never been asleep at 7pm in their life.

alltalknobaby · 07/01/2022 19:04

Get a gro clock and a star chart. Set the sun to come up 5 mins later than he normally gets up so that it’s relatively easy to start with, then move it later gradually until it’s at a time you find acceptable. Lots of rewards and positive reinforcement.

Footnote · 07/01/2022 19:06

My 3 year old used to be up with the larks, now he sleeps until 8. At the weekend he’ll stay in bed longer for cuddles too.

KimmyKimdoo · 07/01/2022 19:07

Mine both sleep 7.30-7.30 and have done since 18 months ish (when they stopped napping). I think it’s just part of a child’s own makeup somehow - they don’t seem to follow any pattern at set ages. Some sleep and some don’t!
