8month old not passed urine for 28 hours. Drs not concerned?

Sorry it’s long. Am I over reacting expecting health care professionals to be more concerned? Or am I worrying over nothing?

Not a dig at the glorious NHS. The service tonight has been great and swift to start with… But I am worried as there isn’t really a plan moving forward and we have been sent home! Without DS having a wee in 28 hours.

I called called 111 7pm. Spoken to clinician. Sent to OOH Gp 9pm and they agreed it was strange he has not passed urine. He is presenting well. Smiley and doesn’t look that sick. Still eating and drinking as normal. Which is why we are baffled. They seemed very proactive to start with and very fast to get him seen so I am grateful. The OOH gp said I can’t really let him leave without having a wet nappy, (I agreed) then they called the bigger but local hospital for us to see if we should go down for a water challenge 10pm. Left waiting room so they could arrange this. Then called husband expecting to have a few hours waiting in paediatric unit. Seemed like a good idea.

Next thing I know - they return and say actually you can go home. I’m sure he will eventually go for a wee. Give dehydration sachets if you like.

I asked how long it’s safe to wait?! But got no straight answers. So I’ve turned to the internet to ask for advice. The internet says if your baby hasn’t passed urine for 12 hours seem urgent care. But it’s been double that and they said oh well.. wait and see.

Thank you if you’re reading this.

A bump for you. Do you use disposable nappies? Could you weigh before and after?

superram · 06/01/2022 23:44

Are you sure? Sometimes it’s hard to tell with nappies.

Catchafallingstar15 · 06/01/2022 23:46

I’ve been putting cotton wool balls into nappies to see if they get wet. They haven’t been :(

I could also weigh before and after. Will start from now.

Could he have peed in a bath, OP? (I know one wee per day wouldn't be enough of course, but better than none?)

supermodel · 06/01/2022 23:51

I would be worried about this. Constipation can sometimes effect being able to wee, this happened to my dd when she was about 18 months. Give plenty to drink but I think I would be worried too.

snapple21 · 06/01/2022 23:51

I'd be going back really if another couple of hours passes. This could be dangerous and cause damage to the bladder if it is overfilled.

lynntheyresexswappers · 06/01/2022 23:54

I'd go back, that's not right

Houseofvelour · 06/01/2022 23:54

Go to A and E x

Nevermindful · 06/01/2022 23:56

Could the cotton wool balls have missed it? Have you tried just leaving the nappy off and then you'd definitely know? Cold air on bare skin always made mine wee anyway so it might help stimulate something too?

It really doesn't sound great that they just sent you away.

Catchafallingstar15 · 06/01/2022 23:56

Thanks all.

He could have peed in the bath. It was at 9am this morning though as he was very sick everywhere. Didn’t notice but could have happened.

Still would be over 12 hours since the last one.

I’m going to do my best to feed him lots in the next few hours and then take him back if nothing happens.

Would feel beyond awful is it causes damage :(

jevoudrais · 06/01/2022 23:56

I'd go back too. That's not right, especially if he is drinking as normal.

PurplePansy05 · 06/01/2022 23:59

Why was he sick OP? Could he be dehydrated? Any other symptoms?

Catchafallingstar15 · 07/01/2022 00:00

Have tried nappy free time.

Practically encouraging him to wee all over the floor. I don’t care at this point. Anything!!?

We’ve already spoken to a doctor that works in local A&E and have been told that if fluid goes in fluid will come out.

I’m sure they think I’ve missed the urine but I’m literally face planting the nappy and wiffing it.

They are normally saturated and saggy!

Completely dry overnight last night.

He could be dehydrated but OOH said he doesn’t look too ill.

He is still smiling and okay in himself. Doesn’t mean I’m not worried

Looks like I’ll be taking him back shortly.

Nevermindful · 07/01/2022 00:03

If you dress him without a nappy when you do go back you can say that you definitely haven't missed anything as his babygro would be wet. I'd do that as it's just simpler than weighing nappies. It won't do him any harm if he does wee, you can change him fast.

Catchafallingstar15 · 07/01/2022 00:06

Thanks all for listening.

@Nevermindful will dress without a nappy to show this!! Thanks x

Take him back in. I know this is a different situation but not weeing was a sign dd1 was seriously ill and a seemingly minor infection had spread to her kidneys. She had multiple organ failure and died 8 hours later. I’m not trying to scare you, and your son will be fine (dd1 was in hospital already and had health issues), but this rings alarm bells for me. Hope he is on the mend soon.

NatriumChloride · 07/01/2022 02:48

@Rrrob I am so sorry for your loss. 😔

Any update, OP? I hope DS is ok.

edin16 · 07/01/2022 04:20

My son had similar and it turned out to be something called an intussusception. His sickness could have brought it on. It usually presents with pain and discomfort but I've had a quick Google and this isn't always the case.

We were sent to a&e and admitted when they were trying to figure out what was wrong and it took them over 24 hours to diagnose despite it being one of the most common issues in under 3 males.

liltreasuretree · 07/01/2022 04:30

I'd be worried too OP, especially after 24 hours. I hope you've got some answers by now or that he has had a wee, but if not, is his tummy swollen? Does he seem like he's uncomfortable and could be retaining urine?

Hope to hear some good news from you soon x

Catchafallingstar15 · 07/01/2022 04:48

@Rrrob I’m so sorry for your loss.

brought him to A&E and have been water challenging.

He’s managed to pass something! Although not much at all. So planning some next steps.

Thank you all so much for encouragement and advice I don’t regret coming in the dark cold night.

I'm glad he's in hospital and being looked after. I hope they get to the bottom of it soon!

Alfixn · 07/01/2022 05:30

WTH OP, I can't believe you were dismissed like that the first time.

I'm a vet and a lack of urine output can have several possible causes, some of them very quickly serious. I would consider it negligence if a colleague failed to investigate this as a matter of emergency - as soon as reported.... in a dog or cat.... never mind a human baby!

I have the utmost respect for doctors, but I despair at how inadequate staffing levels are leading to patients concerns being dismissed even in potentially dangerous circumstances.

I'm so glad you went back and they are investigating. Do let us know how you get on.

Clymene · 07/01/2022 05:33

I'm so glad you're at A&E. This sounds really worrying
