Dummy advice

teddysmummyx · 21/12/2021 20:30

My 9 week old son doesn't get along with the tommee tippee orthodontic dummies or the bibs cherry teat, but he really wants the dummy and tries but he just can't keep them in his mouth/gags on them. He sucks and gets frustrated that he cannot keep it in his mouth, but he really sometimes just needs it to get him off to sleep/to soothe him. I would just like some advice on what worked for others! Thanks x

Hiya ! Not sure if it will help but I’m the opposite from you. My baby is 5 weeks and he will only take the tommee tippee dummies. Dummies he’s declined are nuk ones and Asda/sainsburys own newborn ones … maybe your son would take to these better especially the nuk ones as they are a different shape

Bim2021 · 21/12/2021 20:41

We got tommee tippee ultra light dummies, all the others were too heavy for my little one and they kept falling out of his mouth. These ones look a bit Hannibal lector but he prefers them.

MAM ones we used.. 0-2 month size are tiny. Ds was 4-12!!
Went to 0-3 size at about 6 months!

Mam ones here as well

GucciBear · 21/12/2021 21:53

Why on earth anyone would give a dummy to a weeks old child defeats me! Why would want to start a habit which will be difficult to break and may well affect teeth and speech later in life. I didn't break this rule, even on fractious days.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 21/12/2021 21:58

Well aren't you good and proper?
Meanwhile back on earth some dm's realise baby's need to suck. Or dummys surely would be items bought under the counter in back street shops?
Shop away op. In big stores like Boots. Where real dm's shop.

ohcantbeliveit · 21/12/2021 22:04

Mam dummies, hands down.

Don't feel belittled by other comments, OP. Your baby, your choice.

I'm a speech and language therapist. Both my children had dummies. I just took it away at 1 when their teeth were coming through. It's only a problem when they are used well past 1. Babies need to suck. Some mums like me couldn't breastfeed and had to turn to dummies. Why judge someone who is trying to settle their frustrated newborn? OP defo try mam they were the only ones my two would use.
GucciBear · 21/12/2021 22:16

Santahates braised cabbage. Do you, perchance mean dummies?

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 21/12/2021 22:24

Said the dummy....
Pedantic and so righteous?

Val2021 · 22/12/2021 08:04

@GucciBear shut up Smile

GucciBear · 22/12/2021 09:58

Santahates Neither, just correct.

Val2021. No. Everyone is entitled to their point of view.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 22/12/2021 10:04

SIDS? Or is that rubbish advice to use a dummy to help prevent that?.

Because my baby had reflux and screamed for hours at a time, and I was so tired I was hallucinating?

OP, try the mam dummies, they come in several different sizes and the glow in the dark ones are great for night time.

Well done you are obviously a much better parent and person than I will ever be.

Have a medal.

TheRedTowel · 22/12/2021 10:08

Meanwhile the advice of a frazzled mother who had a velcro baby who cried for 8 hours a day every day for four months is to try a bigger size.

Chanel05 · 22/12/2021 10:10

My daughter was using her bottle as a sucking/comfort device. I'd make her milk and she wouldn't have any, just suckled on the teat. Introduced the dummy and that settled her.

Ignore this guilt-inducing stuff and do what YOU feel is right and what makes YOUR baby happy and enhances family peace. It is nothing to do with being a good or bad parent - dummies work for some and not for others. They - or their equivalent - have been used for centuries and have worked well. Do not be guilted into letting your poor baby scream and be miserable when there is comfort at hand.

I hope you find the right dummy for your little one.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 22/12/2021 10:15

Dd liked the nuk genius ones at that age, they are quite small and an easy shape to keep in the mouth. Never got along with the cherry shaped ones.

Which rule is that? Confused

It's alot easier to break than sucking thumbs/fingers. One of mine needed years of orthodontics due to the damage they did sucking fingers. The orthognathic surgery might have been avoided as well.
iloveayankeecandle · 22/12/2021 10:22

@GucciBear aren't you just charming. Off you pop with your crap opinions.

birdglasspen · 22/12/2021 10:27

Dummies are great for settling baby to sleep, problems are caused when a 2 year old is marching around with a dummy stuffed in all day when they could just march around without; practicing their speech! 😳 I used dummies till 6months no issues taking them away and no one missed them once gone including me! Good luck finding a brand that suits think ours are bibs ones.

GucciBear · 22/12/2021 10:34

IloveaYankeecandle. You are entitled to think as you please. However, at least I can type a post which does not include swearing.

Mischance · 22/12/2021 10:57

GucciBear - you are of course entitled to express your opinion or talk about what worked for you and that might help the OP.

What is unacceptable is the aggressive challenging manner in which you worded your post - this is not helpful and implies bad parenting.

It is good that so many posters have had kind and helpful things to say.
