Dummy advice

My 9 week old son doesn't get along with the tommee tippee orthodontic dummies or the bibs cherry teat, but he really wants the dummy and tries but he just can't keep them in his mouth/gags on them. He sucks and gets frustrated that he cannot keep it in his mouth, but he really sometimes just needs it to get him off to sleep/to soothe him. I would just like some advice on what worked for others! Thanks x

@GucciBear I didn't swear?!

GucciBear · 22/12/2021 17:23

I think you will find you did - even though it was descriptive!

ancientgran · 22/12/2021 17:35

GucciBear what do you think of the damage thumb/finger sucking does and how hard that is to break, you can't just take their thumb/fingers off them when you decide it is time to stop.

ancientgran. As I have no experience of a child finger or thumb sucking I have no opinion. This whole discussion has descended into the puerile and so I shall not be posting here again. No point.

ancientgran · 22/12/2021 18:28

I think it is fairly obvious to anyone that you can remove a dummy when you decide they have to stop but you can't remove their fingers or thumbs so clearly one is easier to break than the other.

GuckGuckDoose · 22/12/2021 18:31

We also had great success with the Nuk ones OP. Sometimes get them in larger boots stores, but mainly ordered on Amazon.

GromblesofGrimbledon · 22/12/2021 18:47

Some seriously ignorant comments on here. All from one poster.

OP my wee boy (12 weeks) has terrible reflux and glues himself to my breasts to soothe and comfort the pain. A dummy solved this instantly. The sucking helps him. We just bought a variety to see which worked and he took to the MAM flat ones.

He was starting to hunt for fingers and thumb and, as an adult who now has the very visible results of years of thumb sucking til the age of 9, I felt a dummy was an easier habit to break.

I wouldn't deny a baby who needs it a dummy anymore than I'd rip their security blanket away from them. Some people are either cruel or think that all babies are like their babies. It's hard to give them the benefit the doubt when their posts are so snot-nosed and condescending.

Mariposa123 · 22/12/2021 18:51

If you’re breastfeeding my LO gets on with the tommee yippee closer to nature ones - they only seem to sell them online though. He didn’t they on with the ones in the shop.

GivenchyDahhling · 22/12/2021 18:52

@GucciBear returned to sit under their bridge I hope.

The only dummies my little boy was interested in were these cheap Nuby ones from Aldi, something like £1.99 for 2 when they do their baby event. It’s a full cherry shape. I tried the pricier ones like MAM etc due to sorry about teeth development but no, only Aldi would do!

3WildOnes · 22/12/2021 18:52

Mine only liked the Avent ones. Dummies are great for promoting independent sleep if you don’t feel comfortable letting your child cry it out. I have friends who sucked fingers and thumbs for years, I think that had a much bigger impact on their teeth.

danidandan · 22/12/2021 18:58

@GucciBear

Why on earth anyone would give a dummy to a weeks old child defeats me! Why would want to start a habit which will be difficult to break and may well affect teeth and speech later in life. I didn't break this rule, even on fractious days.
😂😂😂😂😂😂

Who pissed on your fire to be so pressed by someone asking for dummy advice?

Yawwwnnnnn

OP, don't listen to busy idiots like this.

MAM ones worked a treat for us!

Cotswoldmama · 22/12/2021 19:01

My eldest liked the really huge cherry ones we used to get them from the poundshop which was handy as they were so cheap we could have lots sterilised. My youngest wouldn't take any dummy which was hard as he just wanted to comfort breastfeed all the time! It might be that they just won't take one, my youngest wouldn't take a bottle at all either!

ChampooPapi · 22/12/2021 19:04

The best dummies I found my little one had are the ones without plastic rings, there are various types. My little loved them, they did different shape tweets you can try. I'll link a few brands

Kidley do some...

Dummy advice
ChampooPapi · 22/12/2021 19:07

They like chewing the other side. The natural rubber can be a bit funny for sterilising though but they do some others as well. Have a look at kidley dummy section, they do three packs of natural ones in both a cherry teat, symetrical ect

Don't know how that other photo got there, that's what you get for typing and juggling other things!

I am not expert on childrens speech and language development so when speech and language therapist provided one for dd when she was a few days old I didn't argue. Perhaps you could share the evidence for dummies damaging speech and language development?
ChampooPapi · 22/12/2021 19:29

These are good

Winterlude · 22/12/2021 19:57

My youngest had the MAM dummies the newborn size.

Mommabear20 · 22/12/2021 20:00

Both my 2 have lived the advent ones 🥰

teddysmummyx · 23/12/2021 09:00

Thank you to all the HELPFUL responses on here, I think it will be a case of trial and error!

GucciBear - what a sad little life. 🤣

@GucciBear I used no swear words in My opinion.

GucciBear · 23/12/2021 14:13

iloveyankeecandle Well that's alright then. Your adjectives need some work though!!

Ontheroadtorecovery · 23/12/2021 14:19

@ Gucci bear

Just because you don't choose to do something doesn't mean you should make others feel bad for their choices. They do help to prevent SIDS when my dd was born she was very poorly and had to go to a different hospital before I could. The nicu staff asked me if I had a dummy and as I didn't they provided one I think it was a NUK one but I also used MAM and I thi k they can be sterilised in their own container in the microwave so handy that was. Good luck op ignore the rude responses 🙂
