Halloween hanged bin bag man

AIBU told think that this is not tasteful and Hmm especially if you have young small kids in the house. Why would you want to show them how to commit suicide? And whilst you're at it the rest of the neighbourhood kids?

It's lots of black bin bags stuffed into a human shape hung from the upstairs window.

Jeez, I'm into black humour but that's really poor taste.

Sackofnickles · 31/10/2021 13:42

I agree.

It's a common method of suicide. My late partner does that way. If I saw it I would be really upset.

Died*

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 13:43

It's right outside the church!!

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 31/10/2021 13:46

That's too far. It really is
What's wrong with some pumpkins and cobwebs? Do we really need to reenact crime scenes and tragedies?
I have never much liked Halloween but the way it's getting more and more horror movie like and extreme I really hate.
I like horror movies myself but that's different to what should be inflicted on non consenting passers by

NuffSaidSam · 31/10/2021 13:47

It doesn't sound very tasteful, but I also don't think it's 'showing kids how to commit suicide'. I think that's a bit over dramatic. Most kids will file a man made of bin bags under the same category as skeletons/witches/pumpkins/ghosts etc i.e. just a Halloween decoration.

Do you fear that the sight of a crucifix in the church will show them how to commit murder?

Mumteedum · 31/10/2021 13:47

Halloween has gone wrong Haloween Sad

Cute witches and skeletons and pumpkins✅
Stuff resembling props from 18+ horror movies 👎

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 13:47

Does it need to be reported. Or am I I being too sensitive? I mean I know its Halloween but it's not exactly a ghost or glow in the dark skeleton... Poor little kids. I saw probably a 3/4 Yr old coming out of the front door?

OP posts:
Leftphalange · 31/10/2021 13:49

I agree it's too much

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 13:50

@NuffSaidSam you're can't really compare the two... One died to save the world. He had plenty of opportunity to escape if he wanted to so was it really murder if he let it happen? Anyway not the purpose of the debate.

MrsGeralt · 31/10/2021 13:51

Most Halloween decorations are really gross and past the boundaries of what's in good taste and what's not. That is awful but so is a lot of the crap you can buy in high street shops.

AosSi · 31/10/2021 13:51

Reported to who on what grounds? I think it's tasteless myself, wouldn't want to upset a family who've had a member take their own life (or trigger someone who's attempted this method themselves). But I just don't see how my dislike of it means that the homeowner can be forced to take it down. And it being opposite the church is neither here nor there.

Do you honestly believe that's what small children think when they see a crucifix?

Why don't you tell them the bin bag man died to save the world too? Presumably then it would be fine?

It's a suggested decoration all over pinterest this year with instructions for making it so I can't say I'm surprised someone has done it.

😂👍

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 13:56

Do you honestly believe that's what small children think when they see a crucifix? obviously not they usually ask what happened and most typical adults know enough to explain even if they think it's mumbo jumbo to explain!

It's just pretty rank imho.

I work in mental health and I just can't ever find suicide or violent death a source of entertainment and I think people should give some consideration to those who have been affected by such tragedies and draw a line.

Of course you can't report it to anyone. It's not a crime. I probably wouldn't even go as far as a note through the door. I would just be quietly upset by the memory of all the people I have known who died by suicide and their families grief being so disrespected.

BirdyBee · 31/10/2021 13:57

Someone here has a chopped up body in the garden with a chainsaw and tons of fake blood, hand prints, a weelie bin filled with body parts ect very effective if on a horror movie set, front garden on a family estate not so much...

MazzleDazzle · 31/10/2021 14:00

Awful!

Suicide, sadly, is increasingly common. We live in a small town and off the top of my head I can think of 4 local people who have hanged themselves in the last 5 years or so. It could be upsetting in that many people will know of someone who’s been affected by this.

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 14:03

Exactly. Hasn't there been way more suicides because of covid this and last year to?

It's really sickening.

I agree that it's in very poor taste.

But I don't think it's going to teach kids how to commit suicide any more than a representation of Jesus on the cross would teach them how to crucify someone.

And similarly if they ask about the binbag man you can tell them any old mumbo jumbo i.e. 'he's a monster and they've just hung him out the window as a decoration'. You don't need to tell them 'it's actually a representation of someone who has taken their own life through hanging'.

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 14:09

No but they wouldn't need to ask as it's pretty clear what it is Confused it's a stark obvious image that a kid isn't going to forget.

I think it would just register to me as regular halloween decorations, in similar vein to fake blood, axes in head, bandages around severed limbs etc, all quite horrific, but fairly standard halloween deco.
I would say bin bags are not a realistic depiction of suicide, although can understand that anyone that has lost a loved one that way could find it triggering.
What can you do, who would you report it to?
I personally I think halloween is a good way to celebrate some of the darker aspects of the human experience in a fun way, we live in a very sanitised world.
