High Chairs?!

Hi Everyone,

My baby is 5 months old and I want to start giving her some baby porridge as she’s a really hungry baby. I’ve been looking at high chairs but there is so many and I want to find the most suitable one. Most of them are from 6 months but I want one which is from birth so it’s more comfortable for her. Has anyone got any recommendations? Or has had any bad experiences with certain ones so I can steer clear of them?

Thank you!xx

IKEA antilop - cheap, easy to clean, you can buy an insert for while they're small. Fantastic.

This one. Definitely.

Avoid anything with a padded seat. Disgustingness lurks in the creases.

HalloHello · 31/10/2021 08:45

Yep I bought a lovely Joie highchair, which became so difficult to clean. Got the antilop and never looked back. Asda or Aldi do their own versions. Won't be padded or reclining but baby should be sitting upright anyway while eating!

Absolutely the antilop, I have friends who bought more expensive padded ones who then put them in the garage and got an antilop! Ridiculously cheap for how much we use it, the padded insert is great for when they are smaller

Findahouse21 · 31/10/2021 08:48

We didn't want a high chair when dd was first weaning (selling a house with a small kitchen!) so we used the mamas and papas snug seat

DicklessWonder · 31/10/2021 08:50

Babies don’t need porridge at 5 months (hence high chairs from 6 months). If she’s hungry, give her more milk!

ChuckMater · 31/10/2021 08:58

Agree with dicklesswonder

Another for this one.

But also agree with this

Another one for antilop. cheap and cheerful can't go wrong. Cheap enough to have one at grandparents house so you don't need to lug one round with you.

Easy to clean too.

Whatamuddleduck · 31/10/2021 09:04

The basic Asda version of the antilop is great. Ours has legs that detached to make it a little seat that toddler could sit in for snack. Just stopped using that now at 3.5 as she’s too big. Cost £12 I think.
The padded, multi position ones are expensive and just impossible to clean! We had one and it went back!

User00000000 · 31/10/2021 09:08

IKEA antilop! Pretty much every one I know uses it now. Expensive fancy ones get bought then discarded as they are far too difficult to clean and store.

SequinCola · 31/10/2021 09:09

Definitely the Antilop.... Only problem is there aren't any in stock at any IKEA in the country! We're trying to get one for our 6mo and have been told no stock til end November. The fancy highchair we ordered in September still hasn't arrived. So you might be best just to get whatever you can! We've bought a travel on to strap to a dining chair in the meantime and then we have it when we need it.

If you manage to get an Antilop you can get accessories for it on Etsy to make it less generic.

Sleepyquest · 31/10/2021 09:13

Hahah @HalloHello are we the same? Massively regret buying a padded one! I have taken the padding out

careerchangeperhaps · 31/10/2021 09:18

IKEA antilop without a doubt. It's cheap and totally practical. No creased or padded cushions for yukky stuff to hide in, the legs come off so you can transport it when visiting people who don't have a highchair for you to use, and you can even bung it in the dishwasher (without the legs)!
Most importantly, it keeps baby sat very upright so they're less likely to choke than they would in a highchair that leans back and they can easily reach good on their tray to self-feed. You can use it without the tray and sit baby at the table with you too. It's perfect!

Agreed. There is no contest. There is a reason that almost every restaurant, cafe or other eating establishment has ikea high chairs why reinvent the wheel when ikea have already made the best possible option. Smile

You don't need to give porridge at 5 months, nhs guidelines are 6 months and one of the readiness signs is that they can sit up comfortably, you shouldn't really need a big padded high chair. Don't feel pressured into weaning early, if I did it again I'd wait longer than 6 months really....my baby wasn't even ready then.

Fallagain · 31/10/2021 09:26

Most are from 6 months because unless their specific medical concerns and you’ve been advised otherwise by a paediatrician or a paediatric dietitian its believed that giving food before 6 months can cause medical life long issues.

Agree with this, if she’s hungry then she needs more milk. Also IKEA Antilop.
purplesequins · 31/10/2021 09:31

another one for waiting with porridge until baby can sit by herself.

antilop is great, the seat is small enough to go in the dishwasher should that be needed.
we had one of those seats that you place on a chair so that our dc were sitting with us at the table at mealtimes.

Santastuckincustoms · 31/10/2021 09:35

Agree, don't feed at 5 months, just milk. And also don't start with 'baby' porridge when you do. Start with veg and if you want porridge just use normal unadulterated porridge.

Get the antilop and Google the strap hack with a set of reins if your baby is a wriggler.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 31/10/2021 09:50

I also got a big fancy high chair and regretted it. Our rooms are small and it was hard work to clean.
We ended up getting the chicco booster seat which can strap to chairs or sit alone, so so small and easy to clean, and can bring to restaurants too! Godsend

Also re the weaning, have you spoken to HV or paediatrician regarding early weaning as sometimes it's not the right thing for a baby (although I know some people are advised to for their children if other things are going on with health and weight etc)
If you do start with porridge don't waste money with baby porridge. Just get really good quality whole oats and blitz them into a fine powder. SO much cheaper and nicer quality.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 31/10/2021 09:51

Ideally you do start with veg purées though I think? However I'm sure you are aware of all this anyway and just wanted chair advice 🤦🏾‍♀️

RobinPenguins · 31/10/2021 09:55

Another vote for Antilop! And DH still uses the inflatable insert as a neck cushion in the bath.

Re porridge, I’d definitely try giving more milk initially but equally, plenty of other countries around the world start weaning earlier than us and there is no convincing evidence that giving some solids at 5 months rather than 6 causes life long problems as suggested by a pp.

LittleBearPad · 31/10/2021 10:02

No you don’t have to at all. Never puréed a thing.
