Teething and bad poos! NHS says no but I think yes!

I was looking up teething symptoms in babies and saw this on the NHS website...

'Some people think that teething causes other symptoms, such as diarrhoea, but there's no evidence to support this.'

I'm convinced that my daughter's extra loose poos are a result of teething. It's all coinsided with her dribbling, fist in the mouth constantly, red cheeks, etc.

What are other people's experiences of this?

OP posts:

100% agree. It’s all the drooling and sticking gross stuff in their mouth. Mine also got coughs with teething

Vebrithien · 29/10/2021 08:28

Absolutely with you too. Both mine have had runny bum when they have been teething. I think the theory is that they are putting all sorts into their mouths to bite down on, so are likely to get some irritants or germs into their digestive system.

I thought it was a pretty well known thing
' teething poos' 🤷‍♀️

My DDs were babies 30 years ago, but I still vividly remember some of those teething nappies! Yes, OP, it is definitely a thing.

KatyMac · 29/10/2021 09:53

I think its because the are constantly dribbling and swallowing so the stomach is constantly producing acid as it thinks its getting food and that causes very acid loose poo

WitchsFamiliarWhichIsFamiliar · 29/10/2021 09:54

I'm with you op. I thought the acid caused by the excess saliva also gave them nappy rash. We definitely had to look out for nappy rash when ours were teething badly.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 29/10/2021 09:55

This is absolutely a well known thing. The NHS says no because of course, what do us silly emotional and hormonal women know! Wink

FelicityPike · 29/10/2021 09:56

Yep….they shit to their shoulders with their teeth.
Seen it happen to tonnes of babies.

Noshowlomo · 29/10/2021 10:01

Runny poops, red arse, dribbling, red cheeks, fever, snotty nose. my son has had it all with teething

AnyFucker · 29/10/2021 10:04

Horrid poo that smelled like rancid oranges (acidic)… yup

ThePlantsitter · 29/10/2021 10:04

Yeah no "evidence to support this" = mothers said it. You can even smell a teething poo I think.

DanceAllDay · 29/10/2021 10:05

Also 100% agree with this. No evidence? I’ve not met one parent who has not experienced teething nappies - they’re horrid!

nanabow · 29/10/2021 10:55

Agree.

I wouldn't say DD gets diarrhoea, but she gets horrible loose nappies.

She also gets a slight temp a few days before, and then a nighttime cough from all the drooling. Which isn't ideal in Covid times.

nanabow · 29/10/2021 10:57

Loving all the 'no-evidence' comments.

Just another example of women being ignored and told they are unhinged!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 11:00

when teething acidity of the saliva can change and yes, of course it can change the consistency, colour, smell, & frequency of poop!

mine had absolutely rancid, acrid poos that devastates their skin. have you seen a baby butt with blood seeping out of the skin as if the baby had sat on a hedgehog?
that was my kids' bottoms, every time.

also most of them would have mild to high fever for up to 5 days, loss of appetite, disturbed sleep patterns and extrems clinginess during the period of the teeth cutting through.
7 kids here, that NHS info was absolutely not my experience

Bonnytoon · 29/10/2021 11:03

Definitely with you on this, OP!

PotteringAlong · 29/10/2021 11:05

I’m with you too! I never understand why the NHS say there’s no evidence

TheGriffle · 29/10/2021 11:05

Yep horrible acid poo that you have to slaver their bum cheeks in yellow metanium to keep nappy rash at bay. I do not miss those teething days!

megletthesecond · 29/10/2021 11:07

Yes. Teething causes a weird, sweet smelling loose poop.

The NHS never bother to check this because it's almost only women who mention it.

Hoesbeforebroes · 29/10/2021 11:08

I honestly never knew either of my kids were teething until I saw teeth!

The younger one was rosy cheeked, drooling, gnawing on everything from about 4 months and everyone insisted he was teething, the first tooth popped through at 9 months.

Kids have teeth coming through until 12yo+, so when do these symptoms stop?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 29/10/2021 11:10

Excess saliva always caused runny and acidic poo in mine, causing more nappy rash.

girlmom21 · 29/10/2021 11:11

Mine definitely had god awful poos

Seeline · 29/10/2021 11:12

Yep both mine had it too! Although both mine got upset tums with calpol, so if they had that for pain relief for teething, I suppose it could have been down to that.

@Hoesbeforebroes I found symptoms stopped at about 2. I suppose their systems were more able to cope with it then?

oviraptor21 · 29/10/2021 11:13

Not bad poos as such but a really sore bottom.

MrsWooster · 29/10/2021 11:17

Absolutely. Different poos and a smell of burning rubber, in my two’s case.
