foreverinadaze · 23/10/2021 12:28

Daughter is 14 months
Been full of cold now for over 2 weeks. Rang gp and couldn't get an appointment. Rang 111 and noone got back to me
Ended up in a and e for 14 hours and got diagnosed with a chest infection. This was on Wednesday
I'm not complaining about the wait at a and e at all, more frustration that i had to go to a and e at all.
Anyway 3 days later on antibiotics and she isn't any better at all.
Shes so chesty and she has a high temperature.
She hasn't eaten anything solid for almost a week now. Having milk and water.
All she's doing is crying and sleeping.
I Rang 111 this morning who told me someone would be in touch within 4 hours. Its now hour 6.
I appreciate there busy but I really really don't want to go back to a and e
Is there something I'm missing?

2 a and e visits in 2 weeks is more than enough for me!

If you feel something isn't right either take her to A&E where they are more than happy to check a child over or go to your nearest walk in clinic.

I hope she feels better soon. It could be that she needs the AB's changing over

BlueberrySugar · 23/10/2021 12:35

Also 3 days is enough time for the AB's to start working. You should've seen an improvement by now.

If your mother instinct is telling you that something is not right go with it. Ring 111 ask her to be seen again by a out of hours gp .
Always go with your gut .
Has she had a coronavirus test? I would worry that her temperature is still up after a week.

foreverinadaze · 23/10/2021 12:35

I dont think we have a walk in clinic anymore. At least not one that's reachable by public transport. I'll have a Google but i think it shut down
I feel like such a time waster going to a and e.
I did ring 111 but I dont think they'll ring me back.
Her nappies are dryer than usual as well.
Shes had a banana and some wotsits the last 2 days

Yes forgot to add in my original post. Her pcr was negative that we did last week and the hospital did one on Wednesday which was also negative. Her temperature is hovering between 38.6 and 39. She's having calpol every 4 hours

DC has had a nasty respiratory illness and wheezing and the nurse we spoke to said the last few months has been manic and they've never has so many children hospitalised with respiratory issues. This is in London BTW. She said it's likely due to the fact they isolated for so long and are now socialising again with little immunity.
She told me to never feel like you're burdening the NHS and that they are there to help, especially when it's a little one and especially when it's their breathing.
Hope she's better soon x

I think within 48 hours you should have some improvement, is she taking all the antibiotics? My little boy was the exact same with tonsillitis at the same age but he hated the antibiotics so wasn’t getting enough in him after spitting it all out. If temp is still that high after calpol and 48 hours worth of antibiotics I’d be going back to dr/a&e. If it makes you feel any better I went to a&e twice in 72 hours the other month (both on the advice of gp/111 for two separate reasons! X

It's in liquid form and shes taking it all twice a day. She likes it 😂. She would quite happily drink the whole bottle along with all her calpol. I think im going yo have to go back to a and e. Shes slept since half past 8 this morning. Woken up and thrown up everywhere. And now shes crying and shes hot again. I'll get her ready.. I feel so useless and I'm so worried there gonna think im a time waster or a bad mum. This is our 3rd visit in 2 weeks

Get her to A&E, she’s very young and I would have wanted to see an improvement in her by now. You are not wasting anyones time.

KL92xxxx · 23/10/2021 12:56

Don’t be give it a second thought, she needs to be checked out again. It’s not your fault every other service essentially closes over the weekend. Get to hospital. It’s best to do it now in the day so hopefully you can get back before nighttime. Sending love xx

Sipperskipper · 23/10/2021 13:15

Take her back to a&e.

I had a similar experience with my then 3.5 year old exactly a year ago. She ended up in intensive care with a chest drain!

This is not to worry you, and this was a horrible, extreme example, but the safest thing really is to go and get her seen.

And I say this as a nurse working in a crazily busy hospital too.

foreverinadaze · 23/10/2021 13:27

Just got to a and e. I'll update as and and when I can. Shes very chesty now and I'm glad I bought her

notasillysausage · 23/10/2021 13:30

My little girl was similar recently, same age too, and had bronchiolitis which needed oxygen treatment in hospital. It’s really common at the moment, you are taking her to the right place. Sending hugs

foreverinadaze · 23/10/2021 14:34

When we got to a and e she was seen fairly quickly by a nurse for her obs and stuff. Her temperature is high again. 39.4. She's really chesty. The nurse said she needs oxygen and the doctor is coming as soon as. I'm scared now

This happened with my DD at a similar age with an ongoing cold which became a chest infection and antibiotics that’s didn’t help; we took her to hospital and they gave her oxygen, got some fluids in to her and gave her some stronger antibiotics and within 48 hours she was so much better. Hope all goes well

takealettermsjones · 23/10/2021 14:38

So glad you went in and she's been seen OP. Fingers crossed it's not serious and she improves soon. Flowers

foreverinadaze · 23/10/2021 14:42

She has got an iv in with some fluids. She's fallen asleep. Messaging here is keeping me sane at the moment

OP posts:
dinosaurblues · 23/10/2021 14:45

Thank goodness you took her back. I hope she's on the mend soon.

notasillysausage · 23/10/2021 14:45

You are in the best place, well done for taking her in. I know needing oxygen sounds scary but it’s so common for little ones and the nurses and doctors will be used to looking after children like this day in and day out. The IV will do her the world of good.

KL92xxxx · 23/10/2021 14:56

You are at the best place, the docs and nurses can take over the responsibility of checking symptoms etc now, I know it’s impossible for you to stop, but it’s not all on you now. She might need stronger antibiotics or something. Kids bounce back so fast. Get yourself a drink and a little bit of something to eat if you can. You’ve done the best thing and you’re in the best place now x

thaegumathteth · 23/10/2021 15:05

You've done the right thing OP. Hope she's better soon

I’m so glad you went in. DD1 was admitted to hospital just before her 2 birthday in a similarish situation. Now it’s just a story we talk about.

Children go down hill very quickly but they can also turn a corner very quickly too.

foreverinadaze · 23/10/2021 15:34

Oxygen being given. She just looks so tired and she just wants to be held. Its so unusual, since she started crawling she has never wanted to be held. Always on the move. And to see her energy empty is scary.
They've taken some bloods. And a sample of the lovely green stuff coming from her throat.
Shes dehydrated.
She just wants to sleep. The nurse is going to watch her. I'm gonna grab a bite to eat and a drink.
I think we're gonna be admitted so want to get my energy up

OP posts:
Fallagain · 23/10/2021 15:37

I would prepare yourself that she may need a 3 day course of IV antibotics.
