Somehow DS managed to escape the last epidemic that went round nursery. God knows how! Today the first case of the year has been confirmed so I'm bracing myself for him to pick it up this time. What do I need to stock up on to help him get through it? And did your little ones feel really awful with it? Dreading it, tbh, but it's not something we can avoid forever 😣

Calamine cream kept in the fridge rather than the lotion that can be drying. Naked as possible.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 19/10/2021 19:29

Porridge oats in a sock or tights/pop socks ove the tap. Makes a lovely oatmilk bath.

I'd recommend Piriton syrup as well but it made DS hallucinate which was great at 3am.

Vaccination

Seedlipvshendricks · 19/10/2021 19:38

Vaccination! You even get boots points for it

MWestie · 19/10/2021 19:38

My DS had it pretty bad when he was 3, it was all over his eyes and we had to take him to specialist eye dept at A&E.

We had his younger sister vaccinated.

MissConductUS · 19/10/2021 19:39

Get him the jab. It's standard in many other countries.

LakeShoreD · 19/10/2021 19:41

It is something you very easily avoid forever by getting vaccinated

SylvanasWindrunner · 19/10/2021 19:41

Another vote for vaccination! It's highly unpleasant and can cause lifelong scarring as well as other complications. If you can afford it, then I think it's a no-brainer personally (and it'll probably cost you more salary in missed work and/cancelled events when they do get it anyway).

TheFairyCaravan · 19/10/2021 19:42

Bicarbonate of soda in the bath.

DS2 had spots on top of spots. He was really unwell, however I read about bicarb baths and they worked wonders. He didn’t scratch and hasn’t got any scars. It was just a shame I didn’t know about it a couple of weeks before when DS1 had them.

You can’t give ibuprofen when children have chicken pox, either.

MWestie · 19/10/2021 19:42

Although it's still possible to catch even if you've been vaccinated, but hopefully a milder dose.

We found Virasoothe gel helped DS more than calamine, he did have it at the height of summer however so probably had a cooling effect.

doodlejump1980 · 19/10/2021 19:43

Don’t do calomine, it dries the scabs up making them more likely to scar. What you need is Virasoothe. It’s a gel. Cover child in it, and remember DO NOT give ibuprofen for chicken pox. It can make the spots go rogue. Google it.
If you have any other children, the second child to get it, will get it worse as they will be subjected to a longer virus load. My twins had it, first had it, around 50 spots, then two weeks later his brother got it and there wasn’t a bit of him that didn’t have a spot. But we used virasoothe, and neither has a scar. It’s miracle stuff!
Good luck!

CrabbyCat · 19/10/2021 19:45

Another vote for vaccination - it will also make it a lot less likely he gets shingles later in life.

Snowisfallinghere · 19/10/2021 19:46

Vaccinate, like we all do in most other developed countries.

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 19/10/2021 19:56

Vaccinate, why let them suffer if they don’t have to.

user1000000000009 · 19/10/2021 21:46

Pour calamine lotion in the bath

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 19/10/2021 21:49

Bah! I took my kids to Superdrug! Didn’t even think about the advantage cards points. Gutted! 😂

Seriously though, anther definite vote here for vaccination.

Dcrolo12345 · 19/10/2021 22:37

How much is the vaccination ?

jelly79 · 19/10/2021 22:38

Oat baths!

Porridge oats in a sock

Dcrolo12345 · 19/10/2021 22:38

Also how long does it take to work does anyone know? Nursery has pox going round at the mo I’m worried...

Spongeboob · 19/10/2021 22:44

Poxclin mousse and virasoothe were game changers for DD. She was in such pain and the Poxclin was utter relief. The virasoothe prevented scarring, she was absolutely covered.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 19/10/2021 22:47

@Dcrolo12345 it’s two jabs six weeks apart. I paid £70 for each jab.

WeeM · 19/10/2021 22:48

@Dcrolo12345

How much is the vaccination ?
We paid £140 at Boots for it-It’s 2 doses.
Pitavina · 19/10/2021 22:52

Vaccination is cheaper than taking unpaid leave from work to look after a child with chicken pox!

AtLeastPretendToCare · 19/10/2021 22:52

Vaccination. I really suffered as a child and didn’t want my Dc to go through that.
