Day off work - is it annual leave

BrilliantBetty · 07/10/2021 18:10

I had a day off work to look after my poorly child.

Logged on to do a few emails etc during the day but that's all.

Manager is saying a day is being deducted from my annual leave.

Just wanted to make sure that is correct?

We get 6 child dependency days a year at school.

Maybe next time say you are ill yourself?

BornIn78 · 07/10/2021 18:12

Depends on what your contract says, surely? Would you rather take it as unpaid leave? Do you get carers leave?

Soapflower · 07/10/2021 18:12

Annual leave or unpaid, we offer the choice

Where I work it would be a day off unpaid

MattyGroves · 07/10/2021 18:13

Yes, though often I agree with my manager that if I do some work through the day, we can count it as half day

minimecantrollerskate · 07/10/2021 18:15

You should discuss it with your employer, but you should be able to choose between holiday and unpaid leave, whichever you prefer.

Or can you make up the hours depending on what you do?

StripeyBadger · 07/10/2021 18:16

It would be unpaid or annual leave where I am, unless I made up the hours in the middle of the night.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 07/10/2021 18:16

I’m home with dd sick but she’s 10 so I’ve worked from home (was due to work from home anyway). Did all that was expected of me. My dept is really flexible but if I did it a lot it would be annual leave or unpaid leave. As I was on a call at 9.15pm on Monday due to an emergency call being needed you can see why they don’t hold us to that.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/10/2021 18:17

It would be paid for me. I had many days like this when my kids were tiny, 5 to 10 a year. Never unpaid or leave. Informally it was compassionate leave but managers just didn't note it. They were very kind.

My kids are 7 and 9 and I can't remember the last time I've had to be off for them.

I work at a university.

SummerHouse · 07/10/2021 18:17

We get dependants leave but it varies.

I tend to take AL as it seems fair for me and part of the give and take between employee / employer. But then my employer is very fair and we get generous AL. Not sure I would be so keen if that weren't the case.

megletthesecond · 07/10/2021 18:17

I would insist on it being unpaid emergency leave. I used to do this when we weren't allowed to work at home.

Lazypuppy · 07/10/2021 18:18

Yep annual leave or unpaid, surely this would be discussed when you asked for the day off?

WellTidy · 07/10/2021 18:19

It would be annual leave for me. We don’t get paid carer/dependent leave days, and (unpaid) parental leave has to be booked in advance.

Gherkingreen · 07/10/2021 18:20

I'm able to take several emergency days off a year for this type of thing, or line manager would allow me to make time up. Very flexible and employee focused in that sense

Severntrent · 07/10/2021 18:21

Al or unpaid

skatewanker · 07/10/2021 18:22

You need to check your contract.

Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 07/10/2021 18:23

Legally yes.
In my role I’d be allowed to work from home, look after sick child and be trusted to make time up if needed another time.

Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 07/10/2021 18:24

@megletthesecond

I would insist on it being unpaid emergency leave. I used to do this when we weren't allowed to work at home.
There is no legal entitlement to paid time off for this.
Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 07/10/2021 18:24

(Unless by contractual agreement but not as a statutory thing)

Level75 · 07/10/2021 18:25

Default would be unpaid emergency parental leave. Annual leave if that's what you specifically request.

FinallyHere · 07/10/2021 18:25

We get fourteen days parental leave to be used with agreement of your line manager.

Mermaidpool · 07/10/2021 18:26

Annual leave or unpaid I would be offered the choice

InTheLabyrinth · 07/10/2021 18:26

What do you think it should be?
It would have been annual leave at my old place. But I would have been able to request (and would probably have been granted) unpaid leave if I was short at the end of the year).

Current place, unpaid.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 07/10/2021 18:27

Does your workplace not have a "time off for dependents" policy?

My work place offer two days paid a year whereas my husband's offer five days paid per instance it is required.

You also have unpaid leave which is available to all parents and can take unpaid up to 4 weeks a year (but only 18 weeks in total per child I believe) up to the child is 18.
But I think you may need to tell them in advance for this.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 07/10/2021 18:43

This would be like sick leave for me - I’d still be paid and it certainly wouldn’t come out of my leave. Can’t remember what exactly it says in my contract, but certainly on the couple of occasions I haven’t been able to work because of a relative (sick child, and once when my mum had a medical emergency), there was no question of my having to take leave for it.
