Day off work - is it annual leave

I had a day off work to look after my poorly child.

Logged on to do a few emails etc during the day but that's all.

Manager is saying a day is being deducted from my annual leave.

Just wanted to make sure that is correct?

Of course it's correct, sick leave is for you not your dependents. So either annual leave if you want paying or unpaid leave (at employers discretion) if you don't mind losing the money and would rather keep the annual leave or if you've no annual leave left.

Unless you have a specific contractual paid dependants leave entitlement (and these are fairly rare), then the default would be unpaid leave, but usually with the ability to take annual leave so that you don't miss out on pay.

Which would you prefer? Using a day's leave, or losing a day's pay? I would imagine either are likely to be possible, so it might be worth speaking to your line manager if you'd prefer to take a day unpaid rather than use up your leave.

NHS here and we have up to 6 day's paid carers leave per year, or could choose to take it as annual leave. If we'd run out of both then we could make up the time, or ask for unpaid leave but that would be a last resort as 6 days carer's leave plus fairly generous annual leave means people rarely need go ask for unpaid. If someone had done some work during the day they'd probably be able to just take half a day as leave. What do you think it should be OP?

Time off yes, but not PAID time off which is what Miss was referring to.

Unless you do a lot of overtime or have a flexi policy, it would be a/l or unpaid for us.

I wasn't sure, wanted to find out that's all.
I worked in the same LA for several years and not taken time off for this reason before and was surprised it would be AL and not some sort of dependency leave. I haven't argued it, it's gone through as AL.

In my workplace, officially its unpaid dependent leave, or annual leave.

Unofficially, most managers don't put it through the system unless someone is taking the piss.

Allowed one carers leave per year. After that AL or unpaid.
