My 1.8 yr old toddler fell down while walking on a hard, almost concrete like surface and bruised his upper lip , and slightly chipped away upper teeth .

Do I have to consult with paediatric dentist over this ?
You can see bruise and chipped teeth in pic.

Will it be something serious like this article almost scaring me

Like blindness and brain damage just due to chipped teeth. It's crazy!

Dd did similar and was fine. Her adult teeth came through ok too.

CanIHaveAHolidayPlease · 06/10/2021 17:15

My son this this at 18months old and I rushed him to an emergency dentist who advised to file the sharp edge off with a nail file and it will be fine. I didn't bother - what a stupid suggestion!

His adult teeth are through perfectly fine!

PleasantFucker · 06/10/2021 17:20

I'd take him to a dentist to get checked over, I think that's the advice when they've banged their teeth that hard. My DD did it but snapped half of her front tooth off! Looks a right mess, hopefully her adult teeth come through ok.

It’s probably not even a problem- that’s exactly what baby teeth are for! To get knocked and bashed and wait for the adult teeth.

@CanIHaveAHolidayPlease the dentist did exactly that with my then 8 year olds tooth when there was a belt meets mouth incident! It was his adult tooth and they just filed it off.

We did get it checked and they said they would keep an eye on it but 2 years on and it’s fine. He had also previously knocked out one of his baby teeth.

Peridotty · 06/10/2021 17:24

@sarahhoping I would take him to a dentist. They will want to take an X-ray today and also follow up Xrays. There is a chance that the permanent retry might be discoloured but we don’t know that yet until it erupts. If the teeth are just chipped then it’s unlikely. It’s really only if the teeth are knocked out of place and then the roots of these teeth knock into the developing teeth into the gums.

Peridotty · 06/10/2021 17:25
  • teeth not retry

DD chipped her front teeth as they erupted at 4 months Hmm. They have come through a bit grey but as she moves at the speed of light it’s not noticeable. Hopefully it won’t affect her adult teeth and if it does, what is parenthood about but paying for extortionate orthodontic work? Grin

H0cusP0cus · 06/10/2021 17:28

My DS done it at 18 months also, hes 3 now and absolutely fine, hasn't went grey.

Lunde · 06/10/2021 17:29

DD1 did something similar bouncing on a friend's bed at a playdate when aged 2 and embedded her front tooth into the wooden headboard. It bled and was a bit wobbly and we went to the emergency dentist which to be honest was more traumatic than the accident. After examination and x-rays the advice was to do nothing and unless it became more wobbly to leave it alone and it would tighten up itself and it did. Her new teeth came in as normal

DD2 fell on a pavement when she was 3 and broke her front tooth in half and it had to be extracted at the emergency dentist. It did not cause any other issues and her adult teeth were fine although she had to wait almost 4 years.

sarahhoping · 06/10/2021 17:30

This is driving me crazy thinking what if his teeth becomes discolored.. my baby is really cute. Wouldn't want his look to be spoiled. :(
What are signs his tooth will be discolored ? Is this merely a chip in his enamel. Am I overreacting

Two issues from PP:
I can confidently say that no dentist will be taking an X-ray of 1 year old's tooth and secondly, the suggestion of filing a fractured tooth in an emergency with an emery board is also perfectly acceptable in dentistry.
OP, The main issues are whether your DC now has a mobile teeth / tooth and possible Inhalation risk or can't bite together properly or has a concomitant soft tissue injury like a torn labial frenum; therefore best to see / consult with your registered dentist.

bizarrustii · 06/10/2021 17:35

It is possible that traumatised teeth lose their vitality and become discoloured. However, there is no way to predict this and no way to prevent this as the damage is done at the time of the trauma.

Kjr33 · 06/10/2021 17:35

Ah bless you (and your little one) mine did similar, possibly worse! And no lasting problems he is a grown up (of sorts) now. Take him to the dentist but try not to worry

sarahhoping · 06/10/2021 17:37

Sorry I didn't get you @bizarrustii

It might go grey. My sons did when he hit his mouth on a climbing frame. It faded back to white though eventually. No big worry dentist said it was fine.

Peridotty · 06/10/2021 18:14

@sarahhoping you would know if it becomes discoloured because it would go grey or brown.

LIZS · 06/10/2021 18:14

It is not urgent unless teeth are loose or he has injured jaw or inside the mouth.

Peridotty · 06/10/2021 18:15

@sarahhoping @bizarrustii

What she means is that if the tooth is loose then your son might accidentally inhale the tooth. There is also the problem of him not being able to bite. Is there any other injury such as a torn frenum? It’s the attachment between the lip and the gum.

itsasmallworldafterall · 06/10/2021 18:16

It's a tiny chip. If the teeth are not mobile ( which means a possible further break in the root-unlikely) then I wouldn't expect anything to be done. To turn black the pulp inside the tooth needs to die, it sits way further up than the level of that size chip. If it's sharp file it, if it's sensitive to cold rub toothpaste on at night. I wouldn't consider taking an x-ray on a 1 year old for that.

TreaslakeandBack · 06/10/2021 18:18

It will more than likely be fine. Even if it discolours it’s usually just cosmetic. He will still be cute! No one does cosmetic anything on children so learn to love it is your only option!
Worth getting it checked by a dentist but they are highly unlikely to do anything bar provide advice.

mogtheexcellent · 06/10/2021 18:21

Dd did this at 18 months. The tooth grew down a bit more and the sharp bit rubbed down a bit and its barely noticeable.

Dentist said it would be the first tooth to go when adult teeth came in. Still waiting for it to go 18 months after she lost her first one.

CookPassBabtridge · 06/10/2021 18:42

My little one did this but a bit more was chipped off along the whole bottom. They gradually wore down until they were about half the length they were. Looked okay though! But then he banged them twice more, they discoloured and wore away to nothing, the bottoms were yellow and black. Due to covid they were like this years and he's finally had them removed. The good news is he looks cute without them and wasn't suffering with them.

SmileyClare · 06/10/2021 18:53

Poor thing, these things happen. It's really common for toddlers to chip baby teeth.

My toddler son chipped a front tooth on my mum's glass coffee table. It started to go discoloured after a few weeks so our dentist referred him to a paediatric dentist who removed it under sedation.
This was to prevent the adult tooth coming through discoloured. It was an easy painless procedure, took about 20minutes and I took him home straight after.

I would advise keeping an eye on it and seeking advice if it discolours. Please don't panic though Smile

SmileyClare · 06/10/2021 19:01

I wouldn't want his look to be spoiled

Obviously he's still going to be a gorgeous adorable toddler regardless of whether he has a missing front tooth or not!
Brace yourself, all his baby teeth will fall out eventually. You'll have years looking at his gappy toothed smile when he's older. It really isn't a big deal.
