My baby has acne :(

DD will be 5 weeks old tomorrow and over the past week has developed what looks like acne on her cheeks. It doesnt seem to be bothering her but it's getting redder and I'm getting worried about it being sore for her.

Has anyone else had this and did it go away? Any tips to treat it?

It’s totally normal. Most babies get it and it will go away in a few weeks. It’s worse for you than it is for them!

orangejuicer · 18/09/2021 17:38

Very normal OP, it will get better.

LaMadrilena · 18/09/2021 17:39

My DD's went away on its own after a few weeks, without any treatment. She had it in her face, ears and chest. I know it looks like it might be sore, but I don't think it is. Unless it begins to look inflamed or something, I wouldn't treat it, at least not without consulting GP.

I hate to be that person, but you really could've just googled this. Completely normal in newborns.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2021 17:45

It's just the hormones from your body leaving her body, don't worry. It's peak time for it and it will go away by itself. Don't pick it or put anything on it, do give regular baths or top and tail wash just with warm water.

spikelou · 18/09/2021 17:46

One more to say it's completely normal and it goes away on its own. Don't worry!

Waternoice · 18/09/2021 17:47

Perfectly normal and used to be called ‘milk spots’
Congrats on your new born.

Did you miss the 5wk old bit? Perhaps OP is not thinking the most logically at the moment!
Heruka · 18/09/2021 19:11

I remember feeling a bit sad during that bit when my beautiful babies had really spotty faces! Passes after a few weeks iirc.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2021 20:58

To be fair it's usually smarter not to Google things when you're in that paranoid first time mum newborn phase so probably better to pay on here anyway!

BertieBotts · 18/09/2021 20:58

Post not pay

Silverdorkinghen · 18/09/2021 21:39

Our youngest ended up covered in spots - face & scalp. Didn’t get better so popped to GP and it was eczema. Soon sorted with diprobase. Worth asking them to check as there are a couple of cusses that can look similar but need different treatment.

SylvanasWindrunner · 18/09/2021 21:41

Yep, baby acne is a totally normal part of having a newborn! It'll clear up. DD's broke out the day we had booked photos Grin

Mumsnet was my search engine when I had a newborn! If you've got children maybe think back to how you felt having a 5 week old?

Yes but when you Google baby acne, all of the pictures look like hives to me🤷‍♀️

My DS had hives caused by a CMPA and everyone fobbed it off as "baby acne".

TolkiensFallow · 18/09/2021 21:56

It’s completely normal! They go spotty (and often a bit ginger) at 5 weeks! Like a teenage boy. Don’t worry, it will go!

Notaroadrunner · 18/09/2021 22:00

Lots of babies get this. I think it can be referred to as milk spots. I bought Ds to the pharmacy when he had it, not knowing what was going on. I think we just kept his face clean with cotton wool and luke warm water. It will go soon.

Opalfeet · 18/09/2021 22:20

I thought they all got it at this time

Heruka · 18/09/2021 22:47

I think baby acne is different to milk spots, if they are what I’m thinking of. Milk spots were white, baby ache is just big red plukes!

Kanaloa · 18/09/2021 22:52

Aww bless him. As pp’s said it’s totally normal, and it always looks worse to you because you worry more as a new mum. It usually goes as quickly as it comes but you could always ask your health visitor if you’re a bit worried or you think it looks quite severe.

It will go before you even know it!

This is exactly it I always end up feeling worse when I google things Blush

Thank you all for responding. It looks worse again this morning but I'm glad it's normal and will pass.

That's so funny, I said to DH yesterday that her hair looks a bit ginger in certain lights and in photos Grin

LaMadrilena · 19/09/2021 10:58

I'd never heard the ginger thing either but my half-Spanish DD looks ginger against the light too! I was blaming her cradle-cap!

OP I spent the first few weeks Googling everything - you're totally right not to! I ended up sending a photo of DD's spots to my Dr cousin (meningitis? allergy?), and I could practically hear the eye-roll in her (very patient) reply!

IWantT0BreakFree · 19/09/2021 11:06

DD had this. We got awful conflicting advice from midwife and doctor. One said put sudocrem on it, the other said moisturise it. In the end we just left it alone and it disappeared fairly quickly. Never seemed to bother her and that was that.

Don't worry about it Flowers
