I'm a babywearing mum of 2 and wanted somewhere other than slingmeet and TBW to generally talk to other BWing parents!

I've got a 25 month old DS I still wear occasionally, when he doesn't want to walk. I almost only do front carries, though I have a range of carriers I bought to master the great back carry.

After I mastered the back carry - onbuhimo first, then Ergo, once or twice with a wrap, I decided I didn't really like back carrying as couldn't see DS and, actually, there's no reason to switch unless you have a smaller baby who needs the front.... Used back carries in the house when DS was too young to be kept out of the way of things I didn't want him in (e.g. dishwasher )

I use wraps almost exclusively, but DH prefers the Ergo. He did use stretchy wraps when DS was young enough for them though. And has become increasingly supportive of babywearing as time has gone on.

I have three buggies too, which have been used maybe a handful of times this year. I really don't like the buggy much, though they're handy for carrying shopping.

mrsgboring · 04/12/2007 16:31

Yes, Bealcain, I find I can't carry my DS for long. I need a sling as my arms are used to being free. And also, I have no waist so he won't sit properly on my hips.

EffiePerine · 04/12/2007 16:35

First, CONGRATULATIONS BEALCAIN

Back to the subject, am still using a Didymos which I love, can still manage DS in a frint carry though he's a hefty 1 yr old (not for long though). The back carry is OK but tricky in bad weather - what are these Kindercoats?

Was thinking of getting an Ergo as well but they are a bit pricy: is it worth it? I like the Didymos cos it is so versatile (I have a long version in the linen mix).

Just a note so I can find this thread later

Congratulaions bealcain! i'm sure you'll get plenty of use out of that mei tai

effieperine - can you borrow one first to try it out? Or even just practise with it in the shop.

I have certainly found that they are worth the money. i think that they probably have quite a good resale value as well.

kiskidee · 04/12/2007 19:18

congrats bealcain. a newborn is so perfect for wrapping ans sniffing their little heads.

I have quite a few wraps but dd 2.7yo now generally runs away when i grab a wrap. I actually managed to wrap her on my front with v. little fuss in Sainsbo's a couple weeks ago much to my shock. She was about to have a wobbly and somehow cooperated long enough to wrap.

These days we mostly do back carries in my newest favourite MT. I seduced her into it because she loves monkeys and the fabric has sock monkeys on it.

Effie, before you get an ergo, i really recommend trying out a few MTs. I had an ergo and sold it on as once i tried other MTs, there was little doubt which i prefer. of course, that may be also because i am small and it just doesn't fit people with small frames very well.

I find the fabric choice of MTs and other soft structured carriers (SSCs) more pretty and versatile too. Not to take too much away from Ergo I hope. It is a great first carrier but once you try other stuff, many people swap their loyalties.

will be back later but - kiskidee - where did you get a sock monkey carrier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lairyfairy · 04/12/2007 20:04

My ergo with 20month old actually stoppes my back pain which I have constantly from excessive boobs, must balance me out or something. I shall be v sad when can't wear my baby any more.

Indith · 04/12/2007 20:09

Mmmm slings

Have a ring sling, wrap and a MT that I shall have to give back at some point but will sulk when I do (KK do you know when the next meet is? Am useless at checking the boards. Hoping that I will be able to have ds with me next time but also very much wanting to not give the MT back )

Ds is way too heavy to have in the ring sling for long now though. Dp insisted on taking him shopping in town at the weekend in it. Half an hour walk there, shopping, to the rugby club then half an hour uphill home again. I checked a million times that he didn't want something 2 shouldered but no. About 20 mins down the hill "He is a bit heavier than last time I did this" Doh!

gingerninja · 04/12/2007 20:19

Bealcain CONGRATULATIONS, you're a nutter, 3 under 3? Flippin' heck. Mucho respect. (I knew this would be your thread )

I started with a baby bjorn before I was introduced to the world of slings and very soon realised it's limitations and sold it on ebay. I wish I'd known about ring slings and wraps in the early days, it would have made life a lot easier. DD was one of those babies that howled everytime she was put down.

I then bought an ellaroo wrap which I absolutely love. DD is 15 months and I can still wrap her on the front. I rarely use it for back carries because I've got an ergo which is brilliant. I carried her for about 5k in it today and I'm pretty small (5'1" and 8.5 stone) and shes pretty large. I find her pretty comfy on the front with it too but not for too long.

I'd love to try a MT and a ring sling but will probably save that for when I go for DC2

Our buggy is also mostly used for shopping, leaning on and a coat rack at home

mawbroon · 04/12/2007 20:31

OOOOOH hooray, somewhere that I can blether about my Kindercoat that arrived yesterday after months of waiting. It is FAB. DS is 2 and we are using an Ergo. Won't be for much longer I don't think because he is 13.5kgs but we live in a city and it is fabulous for going on the bus etc.

The kindercoat is expensive, but am ttc no2 atm, so it can be used from pregnancy right through until next babe is too heavy.

mylittleponey · 04/12/2007 20:47

I carry my little one around - in my left arm at home & in a sling or babybjorn carrier when out & about. So much easier for me than a pram or pushchair.

kiskidee · 04/12/2007 20:51

Indith, i think there may be a meetup over the Christmas hols but nothing yet set up.

I am 5'4" and 7.5 st and find that the waist strap for the Ergo is too big for me (or my waist is too small, heh, heh) and the shoulder straps won't stay up. one is always slipping off so i think my shoulders are too narrow.

About sock monkey. It was made my a WAHM in Norway. this is her site if you go to 'custom' it has the sock monkey fabric I have. You can also buy the fabric from an online retailer and have it shipped to another MT maker. There are a few makers in the UK and elsewhere will probably make one up for you using your own fabric.

jorange5 · 04/12/2007 21:04

kiskidee i am a bit shorter than you and i find the ergo a bit big especially on the shoulders. I thought that it would probably be the same with all slings so have stuck with it. Wearing a big coat helps make it more snug or better still - DP wears it

cmotdibbler · 04/12/2007 21:15

I carry DS who is 18 months and poss around 12.5kg (must find bathroom scales and check). Started with an Ellaroo ring sling until he was 1 or so, then got an Ergo as needed the two shoulder spread of weight to stop getting such amazing bruises, and then fell for a Mei Tai at the Sling Show. I can do a back carry on my own with the Ergo, but can't quite get the straps right on the MT on my own. Fortunatly DH is very good at sorting it out now. He is a sling convert, and goes on at length about the poor little babies in forward facing pushchairs who can't see anyone.
I think that if I was buying the Ergo again, I'd actually have gone for a Patapum toddler as DS could do with a bit more room than in the Ergo.

gingerninja · 04/12/2007 21:17

Sling show? I wanna go, where is/was that then?

peachygirl · 04/12/2007 21:23

can I join in too I have a coorie and a kimmer (pouch slings in different fabrics) and have a babyhawk mei tai which I got recently (waves hello to kiskidee)

funnypeculiar · 04/12/2007 21:27

Ring-sling user here - dd is 20 mths and still loves it. DH is also a convert (although he gets some looks as my sling is an oriental flower pattern & hardly very macho )

I'm also another one who tried to use an ergo & couldn't get on with it....would love to like it...

kiskidee · 04/12/2007 21:37

[waves] @ peachygirl. how is the BH?

at funnypeculiar. there is no way on earth that dh would be caught using a ringsling. he won't even use a wrap. I got the Didymos Jim because it (he) is all goth and rugged and sexy (well as sexy as a piece of cloth can be) looking but dh just smirked at the idea. I also bought a MOM tai which is black with flames and he did the same thing. I think half dh's problem is that he wants to lose a couple stones and then just maybe he will use the MOM Tai.

He will only wear dh while hillwalking in a big framed carrier or carry her on his shoulders elsewhere.

peachygirl · 04/12/2007 21:40

good thanks it worked a treat in London on sunday

chirpygirl · 04/12/2007 21:48

Ooh, hello!
I have 2 dd's, one 22 months and one 8 weeks and I was carrying dd1 on my back until I was 2 weeks off my due date. It actually helped me stand up straight and stopped my backache believe it or not!
Discovered wearing when dd1 was about 3 or 4 months old and have pouches/ringslings/mei tais and wraps but am having to sell some (on here and yahoo)to pay for domestic crisis!

Am totally in love with pouches and newborns, so handy! I made my own fleece pouch last week but screwed up and sewed it along the stretch so dd2 ends up by my knees, oops.

(slow typing tonight as am bfing)

shreddies · 04/12/2007 21:51

Ooh, sling people. I mostly use my hug a bub (tho I also have a coorie and a wilkinet) for 11 month old ds. It is v comfy once on but am increasingly finding it a bit of a faff. Is there anything else out there as supportive but less hassle to put on and get the baby into?

Indith · 04/12/2007 21:59

Kiskidee! Why did you have to post the link to that site? They are so beautiful yet so unaffordable!

Where can I get a really pretty MT for rather less money than those?

mylittlepudding · 05/12/2007 06:22

I have a question for those who wear bigger babies/toddlers on their backs - how do you carry the stuff you need? I only do little trip as I still haven't mastered it. My dd is still very refluxy so I don't go out for longer than an hour, say, without spare clothes, as well as all the other stuff.
