Bed guard- yay or nay?

Katjolo · 16/08/2021 21:45

I will soon be moving my almost 3 year old (3 in a few weeks) from a cot to a single bed. What are your opinions on bed guards? Any alternatives which you'd recommend? Thanks.

Totally personal preference.

I didn't bother with mine. Never had any issues.

Pissinthepottyplease · 16/08/2021 21:47

I used them with my kids but from just before 2. By just past 3 DD1 didn’t need them anymore.

Morechocmorechoc · 16/08/2021 21:51

I have them on 3 and 4 year oods beds. They move a lot at night. My sisters fall out of bed at 7 without them! Depends on the kid

I never used them with my children, no issues.

I rolled a large towel lengthways and put it under the edge of the fitted sheet. It acts as a reminder as to where the edge is but still allows the independence of getting in and out of their own bed.

I had special sheets that had pockets for blow up cylindrical tubes, they were fab!

I did until they were out of nappies. Bed guard makes it too hard to get up for a wee.

They fell out anyway after the guard was removed. So I dont think I'd bother again.

I did this too!

We also had a nest of pillows next to the bed to cushion any falls.

Katjolo · 16/08/2021 22:19

Towel under the sheet is a good idea. Lots of pillows on the floor too...

Definitely not. My child was moved at 2.5. we suspect he may have fallen out of bed once, but could never be sure. He has a decent carpet in the floor, but his bed was fairly close to the floor, I mean it's not a bunkbed 🤷‍♀️

8dpwoah · 16/08/2021 23:37

I saw on here to use a pregnancy pillow under the sheet but towels or special sheets sound much better! I hated the pillow though so that's still on her bed, I'll have to take it off at some point and see how she copes but every night is a 'not tonight' at the moment.

Spanglebangle · 17/08/2021 17:43

Pool noodle under the sheet might work well.

AegonT · 17/08/2021 19:29

We didn't use them. She fell out every night for about a week then never again

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 17/08/2021 19:32

We started off with just the single mattress on the floor, then after a few weeks put the bed up (no guard)

I was going to say this. Worked perfectly for my DD.

Totally read that as pot noodle...and then went 'ooh' 😂
Popcornbetty · 17/08/2021 19:52

Depends on the child but my 4 year old still has onr and I'll be using one for my youngest when the time comes.

Katjolo · 17/08/2021 21:57

My DS1 went from a cot to a single bed at 15m. We put a baby gate across his door but he was so much happier with the extra space to sleep in that he went off far quicker than in the cot.

OldTinHat · 17/08/2021 22:57

Oh, no guard btw. He just climbed round, over and under them 🙄

Katjolo · 18/08/2021 16:34

Oh dear! 🙊

3 yo fell out of bed a couple of times. We just used to put a pillow on the floor. It stopped happening pretty quick. I assume the bed is not that high. You can get a soft carpet as well.

I think kids can go through phases where they fall off the bed. I certainly did at about 7/8 but it goes away.

I would buy a bed guard if it was for a younger child

Whitenoise23 · 11/03/2023 12:22

Can i ask which one do you have and do you recommend it?

AlwaysLatte · 11/03/2023 12:39

I didn't - the cot bed was so low down. If you're going straight from a cot to proper bed I would though.
