How old were your children when they moved to full sized cutlery?

Just that really - a few examples as guidance would be great. Thanks in advance.

DD1 - I can’t remember when we started using metal children’s cutlery but she was using adult size at 4 in preparation for school. DD2 used metal children’s cutlery from about 8 months.

Mine started at about 1 and a half. We didn't encourage it, but he suddenly became very stubborn and wanted to copy EXACTLY the way everyone else eats. So it turned into no bib, no highchair, no booster seat, big plate, big knife and fork over the course of about a month.

I should clarify, the knife isn't all that sharp and he doesn't know how to use it. He just holds it or leaves it on the side. It's just that he absolutely must have the same as everyone else 🤷‍♀️

3ish. I bought the cheapest set of adult cutlery from asda because they were nice and light for them to use.

Mine are 8 and 6 and use the IKEA junior stuff still. Older one is fine with grown up stuff on occasion but 6 yo is not.

SunShinesBrightly · 11/08/2021 21:11

Hmm... My 18 year old still uses her small cutlery! It's plain (no teddies or fairies on it!) She has small hands and says it feels nicer to hold!

Thinking about it the adult cutlery we have at home is pretty heavy which is why they are not keen.

AnUnlikelyCombination · 11/08/2021 21:15

6ish, but they moved on from plastic spoons quite young (1ish), to the metal IKEA child-sized cutlery with a knife that actually chops things. Our cutlery is quite heavy, which delayed it.

ElfDragon · 11/08/2021 21:21

We have proper steel cutlery in kids sizes - my eldest (17!) and youngest (9) still use these mostly. Actually, think eldest only really uses the spoons now (she doesn’t like taking big mouthfuls!). Youngest still uses knife, fork and spoon from these sets - they are a better size for his hands.

Middle child (14) and eldest use salad knife/fork as a better size/weight for them, but my ‘standard’ cutlery is quite big.

Generally use teaspoons not dessert spoons (although the kids cutlery spoons are a better size - bit bigger than a teaspoon but smaller than a normal spoon so use them a lot)

glampingcamper · 11/08/2021 21:27

9 or 10 I think. Our full-size cutlery is pretty big and heavy, I avoid using the "big" spoons too Grin They used smaller metal cutlery though rather than plastic.

FartnissEverbeans · 11/08/2021 22:33

Since the beginning pretty much.

He doesn’t use big spoons though so he uses teaspoons instead, and he doesn’t use a knife. Just adult forks I suppose

Thanks everyone, that's quite a range too, which is interesting. I hadn't factored in the weight, just the size, so that's really helpful. I'm going to disappear from this thread now. Thanks again.
