I am going to Munich on saturday, to be Corporate wifey at a dinner hosted by some german colleagues of DH's; they all speak really good english but I am trying to learn a bit more german (i am ok in conversation for a while, then have to resort to english..) Anyway, I need a translation of 'I am learning german' and 'my german is rubbish' (mine deutsch ist crap?)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
luciemule · 29/11/2007 11:05

'Ich lerne Deutsch' und 'mein Deutsch is nichts so gut'

captainmummy · 29/11/2007 11:07

Ta lucie - I normally say 'ich bin deutsch ge-errrr learning.' Then we swap to english. Can you translate ' I have a terrible accent'?

German with an English accent sounds adorable!!

Mein Akzent is nichts so gut.

ps - I'm not German and have only done german A-Level and don't really do much german anymore so I'm really crap too!

DaddyJ · 29/11/2007 11:12

ok, say:
'Ich habe einen komischen Akzent!'
(I have a funny accent)

DaddyJ · 29/11/2007 11:13

lucie's suggestions are perfectly fine
just drop the 's' from nichts, i.e.
'mein Akzent ist nicht so gut'

luciemule · 29/11/2007 11:22

whoops - sorry - I said I was crap!

captainmummy · 29/11/2007 12:04

Thanks everyone, - German with an english accent sounds adorable????? Wirklich? (showing off now) Sind Sie Deutsch, daddyJ? Meine Mutter ist Deutsch und sie hat gesagt meine akzent ist -errrrr crap! (actually she has a really pronounced german accent even after nearly 50 years here!So I don't expect to have a good accent atall.)

Just drink lots of wine, you'll be fine - viel Spass!

berolina · 29/11/2007 12:56

Tbh, they'll be so desperate to speak English with you that you won't need the phrases I speak German like a native but if any German gets a whiff of my accent (which is not always immediately obvious in a short exchange) s/he usually jumps straight to English with eyes shining they just love speaking English!

Auch von mir viel Spass

finknottle · 29/11/2007 13:45

Agree. You will find everyone more than happy to practise their English on you.
Even ime the waiter sometimes!

ChipButty · 29/11/2007 13:51

Viel Spass! Muenchen is schoen!

OverRated · 29/11/2007 13:54

Ooo, Ich bin

Viel Spass

captainmummy · 29/11/2007 14:14

Ok (had to look up Spass) - i have noticed that I go up to people (stations/restuarants/shops) with my carefully rehearsed phrases in german, only to have them instantly reply in english! Yes even waiters! Do they all speak english? They put us english to shame.
And I fully intend to have viel spass on the sunday at the christmas markets - bratwurst/bretzeln/reibekuchen....

I'd go for the roasted almonds and the mulled wine, that's Mandeln and Gluehwein. Love the almonds

What part of Germany is your mum from?

SSSandy2 · 30/11/2007 09:38

What I'd look at buying and taking back with you if you get the chance timewise to go to a decent supermarket, dept. store is Spekulatius (yummy biscuits with cinnamon in different shapes) and Stollen which I find much nicer than our standard Christmas cake. Less heavy and just dusted with icing sugar, none of the marzipan, royal icing.

DaddyJ · 30/11/2007 09:42

Bin kein Deutscher, cm, nur germanisiert!

Will you lot stop talking about German food..
Thüringer..frische Bretzel..deutsches Bier..Schweinshaxensemmel!!!!

Jetzt hab ich Hunger.

finknottle · 30/11/2007 09:46

I've just bought Brezeln hot from the bakery... here, can you smell them?
hmm

DaddyJ · 30/11/2007 10:23

FINKNOTTLE!

Actually..I am off to the Vaterland in a few days so
looking forward to doing some serious food shopping.

And reminding myself how to spell Brezel..
doitsche Sprache, schwäre Sprache!

berolina · 30/11/2007 10:28

dh always says brezeln are the one thing he misses about the Schwabenland...

SSSandy2 · 30/11/2007 10:30

Lieb' Vaterland, magst ruhig sein..

OMG whispers I really like that song

SSSandy2 · 30/11/2007 10:31

why is he missing them Berolina? Berlin is brimming over with them

berolina · 30/11/2007 10:33

He thinks they do 'proper' ones down there

How are you bearing up? I forgot how early it gets dark here in winter. In the Ländle we definitely had a good half hour's more light (and that is not clouded by nostalgia, I couldn't wait to leave)

Hi Sandy - mum is actually from a place called Peckatel, in what was East germany - came across before the wall was built. She goes back to (west) germany once a year or so, and apparently she has an east german accent, even now! She also says olde-worlde things like 'Apfelsiner saft' instead of 'orangen saft' which it is now.
I must remember to bring back some senf - the mustard here just is not the same.
