I am going to Munich on saturday, to be Corporate wifey at a dinner hosted by some german colleagues of DH's; they all speak really good english but I am trying to learn a bit more german (i am ok in conversation for a while, then have to resort to english..) Anyway, I need a translation of 'I am learning german' and 'my german is rubbish' (mine deutsch ist crap?)

Doing ok here Berolina. Dd is feeling quite grown up coming home from school in the pitch darkness. Isn't too bad, Ku'damm is all lit up with the Christmas lights and it's all quite festive. I'm a creature of the sun though, so come February you'll be hearing different tones! I always think the worst of the winter is Feb-March when you're sick to death of it.

Sparkybaby, oh that Apfelsinen business used to floor me, couldn't for the life of me figure out what fruit it was supposed to be. They still use that term sometimes, nowadays though to be hip you have to say O-Saft.

SSSandy2 · 30/11/2007 10:46

On this thread though finky, let's make it Wackelpudding

captainmummy · 30/11/2007 11:05

Ok - O-saft. Dead cool. went to berlin for the christmas markets last year, it was beautiful - and handy that it gets dark so soon, shows up the lovely lights. Whats wackelpudding?

I've only just clicked about the Wackelpudding = jelly re Spode Was wondering what jelly had to do with Brezeln and C'mas markets

SSSandy2 · 30/11/2007 19:18

Rely on me to confuse everyone! Sorry about that Fink. To me my posts always make sense, you see...

Berolina how are your dc? Is everything ok with the baby and you all nicely settled back in Berlin?

PS Admylin - can I slip in here while I'm totally confusing everyone and mixing up everything on the thread anyway: Christmas Carols in English in your neck of the woods is Wednesday, 19th Dec 7.30 pm Marienkirche, Karl-Liebknecht-Str 8 (next to Fernsehturm) with the Embassy Singers. Should be good if your dc are up to staying up a bit late. No charge, collection at the door www.embassysingers.de

So how was Munich? Did you have a nice time?

sparkybabe · 04/12/2007 11:02

Hi SSS - yes we had a nice time thanks, but we seemed to spend most of it travelling - got in a taxi at 9.30 and got out of one in munich at 4 o'clock. We did get the chance to wander a bit round the christkindlmarkt on the way to the restuarant, but honestly if you're going to eat, whats the point? No bratwurst, no reibekuchen, no brezen, no mandeln even. Did get a gluhwein tho.
Anyway, I need help with the thank you email now - how about ' vielen dank fur den gemuetlichen abend, und danke fur sein hilfe mit meine versuch deutsche.' What's think?

SSStollenzeit · 04/12/2007 19:07

Who are you addressing it to and how chummy are you?

sparkybabe · 05/12/2007 14:01

I'm addressing it to the poor lady and her husband (she's the PR in dh's company, she set up the dinner) who sat and put up with my terrible german all evening.!I don't know her, other than being introduced on the night, so not very chummy.

SSStollenzeit · 07/12/2007 08:42

sorry sparky I totally forgot to come back to the thread. If you haven't already sent it, I'd write something like:

vielen Dank fuer den gemuetlichen Abend und fuer Ihre freundliche Unterstuetzung bei meinem Versuch, Deutsch zu sprechen.

Dunno if it's great but they'll get the message.

sparkybabe · 09/12/2007 20:23

Hi SSS - in the end I just wrote 'vielen dank etc etc ' and blamed the slow response on the email bouncing (!)
And then I got an email from her husband...

SSStollenzeit · 10/12/2007 10:01

ah c'mon spill the beans...

captainmummy · 10/12/2007 20:19

Yeah well, I was sat up the 'german' end of the table, between PR ladys dh and another corporate wife, and I was very aware that if I turned to talk to the dh, I was ignoring the Corp Wife, so I spent most of the meal talking to dh, who was doing the looking into my eyes-thing....anyway, he took my email address on the pretext of finding me a short-let apartment in the summer (they don't seem to do 1 month lets, or even house-swaps)....but I def. got the feeling he was going to contact me again. Def a bit of flirting going on!

OP posts:
SSStollenzeit · 11/12/2007 10:48

THought he might have been inviting you back for a naughty weekend! You obviously wowed him then!

sparkybabe · 11/12/2007 13:37

What really made me laugh, (and go off him rather) was that they brought their little dog with them - to the restuarant!Little jack russel, called 'lonely' (?) And he signed the email from him and lonely. eeew.

captainmummy · 11/12/2007 13:38

Sorry just posted that as sparky - it's me captainmummy.!

OP posts:
SSStollenzeit · 11/12/2007 19:34

That's ok, recognised your "voice". Everyone takes their dog to restaurants here, don't judge him harshly for that. Never heard of anyone sending emails from their dog before though

So this is what goes on in Munich then eh? Very naughty. Glad you enjoyed the trip

Lapsedrunner · 11/12/2007 20:38

Taking ones dog to a meal is completely normal in mainland europe. Our dog can't believe her luck since she left the UK, all shops (except food ones), restaurants, hotels & public transport etc are dog friendly here in Austria. In fact they prefer dogs to children her in my opinion .

sparkybabe · 12/12/2007 20:44

I had to sign off a bit quick cos dh came in, and he knows my 'captainmummy' name. Anyway, I think it was a bit norty, cos I was sitting opposite his wife of 22 years, (and the dog) and he was quite blatantly flirting. He did suggest that I contact him if I need any accomodation (!) over there. Hey I could do with a holiday...

And he told me that the dog even goes on planes with them when they go on holiday! They pay for a seat and he goes in the little basket with his blankets and chews etc
