Is a cash register a suitable present for a boy?!

Reassure me - it's perfectly acceptable to buy a toy cash register as a present for a 3 year old boy, isn't it?! It's not too girly? I feel it's sexist to even ask that

Perfectly fine. Unless, perhaps, he is heir to the throne of somewhere and will never have to handle money.

Callisto · 29/11/2007 10:25

Arrggg!!! Gender specific toys p* me off so much. It is fine to buy your boy a pink fluffy rhinestone studded cat suit if that is what he wants.

Callisto · 29/11/2007 10:26

Re: the cat suit - I'm thinking of my daughter's pussy cat dressing up suit rather than some dodgy latex adults version.

Yes, it's fine. My DSs have the one from Bright Minds that also works as a calculator. They have played with it a lot as well as using the calculator to check their mental maths.

boo64 · 29/11/2007 10:28

YES why ever not??!

denbury · 29/11/2007 10:29

sounds fine. my 4 year old(well he turned 4 yesterday!!) loves to play with his henry the hoover(on box it said girl toy!!) and shopping trolly. my 2 year old loves kitchen sets and microwaves. the 4 year old likes pink and purple but if you ever saw them you wouldn't say they were ever girlies they are always in wellies and covered in mud!

floaty · 29/11/2007 10:30

I have three boys and can honestly say that the cash register taht the eldest had has been one of the most useful ansd enduring toys which we have had ,they still use it now the youngest being 6(today!) and 10.also role play in reception always seems to involve some form of shop ad this seems to trigger lots of games at hoem too

filthymindedvixen · 29/11/2007 10:33

my boys had cash register, dustpan and brushes, toy kitchen and a pushcahir (though not pink, purely as I am allergic to pink..) all asked for by them and played with for years.

QuintessentialShadowOfYuleTide · 29/11/2007 10:34

No, it is a great toy!

My oldest had one when he was around three. He set up boxes, and lined out goods to buy, and was a real shopkeeper, he loved it.
It is broken now, but my youngest son(2 1/2) will get one for christmas, with playfood, the lot.

There are so many male grocers out there, and many male great chefs. Little boys should be given the chance to play with a whole big spectrum of toys, and a cashregister is fab!

Niecie · 29/11/2007 10:36

Yep, my boys love theirs too. Boys do work in shops and do shopping as well. Mine also have a kitchen, a post office, a dust pan and brush set and a hoover. I am planning that they will be proficient in the use of these things when they grow up so it doesn't harm to get started young.

Mind you, I wouldn't buy a pink one.

lispy · 29/11/2007 10:40

When I worked in a preschool the cash register was ALWAYS the most popular prop - boys and girls!!

Tinkjon · 29/11/2007 10:51

It's not for my child, I certainly wouldn't have a problem with my son having one! But then I dress him in his sister's old pink snowsuit too It's for a friend's son and I just wondered what that friend would think of it - my husband thought that some parents might think it was a girl's toy so we wondered if anybody here did. Glad we're wrong though! I will buy him one today then, thanks everyone!

A cash-register girly? I've never heard that before. We've had cash registers and our boys and girls have both played with them. I'm mystified by the suggestion of them being girly.

brimfull · 29/11/2007 10:58

So am I juule,ds loves his.

choufleur · 29/11/2007 19:23

i bought one for my ds the other day to put away for his birthday next year. can't see how it's a girls only pressie.

Hallgerda · 30/11/2007 10:50

Why ever not? Are you expecting to manage his financial affairs until he has a wife you can hand them on to?

And yes, all three of my sons have loved their cash register and money, though we keep on finding stashes of it in the garden buried as treasure when DS1 was about 7 (and he's 13 now).

NineUnlikelyTales · 30/11/2007 11:01

We;; I would be concerned. Surely we should buy toys for our children that are directly related to the jobs they will be doing later in life? Obviously only women use cash registers. Buy your son a great big plastic butcher's knife and some latex meat. Or a management consultant's suit

Sorry. I didn't mean to be horrible but honestly, why would you be worried? Is he not allowed to play with 'girly' toys as all? What do you think will happen to him?

My DS (15m) is getting a cooker for Christmas and also a dustpan and brush, as he loves to play with these at M&T.

EmsMum · 30/11/2007 11:05

Seems like one of the most gender-neutral toys possible to me. Not that it matters anyhow.

Pheebe · 30/11/2007 11:08

my 3yo son has one and loves playing with it. he's learning about money, food, shopping and most importantly we're having fun together!!! he also has a kitchen unit with a washing machine and regularly makes the tea for us and a whole box full of power tools and several boxes of cars! he loves cooking with me, doing the hoovering and helping his dad with the diy, fixing the car, and wrestling him . a good balance i think

madamez · 30/11/2007 11:13

Working in shops and buying things in shops are things that men and women do on a regular basis, so I really can;t see why anyone would think of a cash register as a gender-specific toy.
Admittedly my DS dad has forbidden me to buy DS one but that is because DS dad used to work in Sainsburys and hated it.

Flier · 30/11/2007 11:16

my son loved his, got it last christmas when he was 3

clumsymum · 30/11/2007 11:19

Of course, DS had one from being 3, we played shop a lot, and teacher's were impressed that he knew all the coins and could do simple sums at 5.

In fact, I have an early learning centre Cash register to sell, in excellent condition, along with a basket of sainsbury's play shopping. Forgot to post it on ebay yesterday.

Oblomov · 30/11/2007 11:24

Yes, my son loves playing 'shop'. His cousing has a till and he loves it.

Furball · 01/12/2007 05:30

my ds is 6 1/2 and still loves to play shops! Infact it's usually played during school holidays straight after a trip to sainsburys and I have to buy all my food again before putting it away. His shop prices are extortionate most items are about £10!

get a little basket and some toy packets as well.

Buda · 01/12/2007 07:15

Am sorry I never bought DS one - can't think why! But he wants one now - is 6 too old do you think?
