If your child bottom shuffled, when did they walk (and reach other physical milestones)?

I have a 18m bottom shuffler who is generally quite behind in reaching his gross motor milestones. He started bottom shuffling at 14m, before this he only sat. He learned to sit up from lying down and pull to stand only very recently (around 17/18 months). When holding hands to stand or walk he is fairly wobbly.

I understand that babies who move this way rather than crawling tend to meet their other physical milestones later than average. I know of no other bottom shuffling babies and so would like to ask those whose babies were, firstly if they also struggled with pulling to stand and secondly what age did they learn to stand independently and walk?

We are seeing a physiotherapist but I’m interested in others’ experiences.

Hi my daughter bum shuffled. She didn't crawl or roll over. Just sat upright constantly. We tried laying her down to encourage other positions but she hated it. Would never pull herself up onto furniture or weight bare.
Bum shuffled till about 19/20 months, would take a couple of very wobbly steps just before started walking
When she started to take steps her feet never looked right. Went physio and she has flat feet and they turn in so she actually walked on the insides of her feet. Had to have insoles and special boots fitted.
Now she is 6 and wears insoles. She can be a little clumsy at times but other than that she is very confident and energetic and wouldn't think she had such a hard time getting up and walking.

First kid never crawled, never stood up, suddenly started walking almost overnight around 15 months. Must have been practising in secret.
Second was a pretty standard crawler, was walking around his first birthday.
Third bum shuffled at a surprising speed, not interested in standing up till he was around 18 months, walked a month or so after that.
All 3 equally active now, by age 2 there was no difference between them at all.

Thank you for the replies. It seems that there is a wide timeline range within bottom shuffling itself. I'm going to keep dyspraxia in mind, as this could well be something to explore. Especially as he's also behind on speech.

My DD didn't bottom shuffle but crawled until 19 months! Then she walked like she had always known how! Was a stressful wait!

My friends son bottom shuffled and walked at 20 months.

Youd never know either of them were late walkers now!

Didn't roll over till the evening of her first birthday. Bum shuffling at 15 months, crawling at 19 which was a surprise. Walked at 21 months.

Now 3 and a half and no issues at all. Once she did start walking she was off like a rocket.

She was seen by a paediatrician for a virus that was giving her a bit of dodgy breathing for a whole who said that bum shufflers are always later and nothing to worry about.

My first daughter bum shuffled at 11 months, stood and cruised at 17 months and walked at 18 months. Once she stood up the progress was quick, she walked well once she started. She hardly ever fell.

She's 6 now and has never been particularly good at running and jumping but we only notice at her gym class now. Her teachers at school haven't noticed. She wouldn't ride her balance bike till she was 3 but she was riding a proper bike by 4.5. She could also ice-skating (slowly) at 4.5 - she just has to try harder as these things don't come naturally to her and she is very cautious.

In other ways including fine motor skills she's always been ahead of her age and not had to try hard. She was reading, writing and doing sums before she started school and we can't keep up with her appetite for new chapter books.

My Dd bum shuffled. Started walking at 15 months. But had lots of words at 15 months.

Ds crawled, commando crawled, bum shuffled. He walked at 16 months.

Both reached other milestones early.

DS bottom shuffled. Late to pull up to stand. Finally walked at 19months. Was diagnosed with hyper mobile hips. (He also had a hip x ray to check that they weren’t out of the joint). Took him a while to learn to ride and swim. But he got there in the end. He’s now a fast sprinter - quicker than his brother!

My youngest DS also a bum shuffler and didn't walk til 19 months. He spent a month walking on his knees (which were red raw - he did the knee walk outside too!) The health visitor said that bum shufflers don't 'need' to walk in the same way as crawlers as they can carry what they need with them and still get about. Thought that was interesting.

I bottom shuffled and walked when I was 2!! My older brother also bottom shuffled and walked when he was 18 months. Don’t worry, your baby will probably be just fine!

OldTinHat · 07/08/2021 21:55

I had a commando crawler at 6m and who then walked at 10m. Then his younger brother skipped crawling completely and was walking at 9m. It was very unsettling seeing a baby walking.

I oldest (now adult) bum shuffled and walked at around 15 Months. She was early on other milestones though as I recall - speaking, toilet training etc. Anyway as an adult she got a first class SETM degreee and now has a well paid graduate job, so don't despar.

Musication · 08/08/2021 07:21

I had a bum shuffler! He went from shuffling to walking at 15mo with nothing in between. He was a bit late to physical milestones but not seriously so and is totally on track now at 6.

Maggiesgirl · 08/08/2021 07:48

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that a bum shuffler is often later to walk and such, because of evolution.

A child that crawls has to learn to stand and then walk as they need their hands free to hold things.
A bum shuffler dosnt as has their hands free so can hold things, so can use tools ( ie a cup, put food in their mouths) so has no need to rush to stand then walk.
