If your child bottom shuffled, when did they walk (and reach other physical milestones)?

I have a 18m bottom shuffler who is generally quite behind in reaching his gross motor milestones. He started bottom shuffling at 14m, before this he only sat. He learned to sit up from lying down and pull to stand only very recently (around 17/18 months). When holding hands to stand or walk he is fairly wobbly.

I understand that babies who move this way rather than crawling tend to meet their other physical milestones later than average. I know of no other bottom shuffling babies and so would like to ask those whose babies were, firstly if they also struggled with pulling to stand and secondly what age did they learn to stand independently and walk?

We are seeing a physiotherapist but I’m interested in others’ experiences.

In a different situation - my ten month old bottom shuffles, started about a month ago, and can now pull to standing too. I hadn’t heard it was associated with delayed physical milestones. Sorry, that is not much help!

Mine bum shuffled and I was told to expect her to walk late but she walked just after her first birthday. Has done everything else late though! Try not to worry, they all get there in the end.

My dd started crawling at 4 months and then started bottom shuffling at 12 months. She wasn't interested in trying to walk, if we held her hand she would just try and get back down onto her bottom and move that way. From 11 months she was able to cruise along by holding onto furniture etc so she was able to move on her two feet but seemed to lack the confidence to do it independently. She was so fast at shuffling on her bottom and could move whilst holding something in each hand that I don't think she was interested in changing it to walking which for her would've been slower. One day at 16 months she stood up by herself and ran around the kitchen completely unaided. Those were her first real steps.

Now at almost four she is an active child who enjoys running and climbing, however she tires very easily when walking. This may be due to one of her feet turning inwards a lot which causes her issues. She has been referred to a pediatric orthopedic unit however we are still waiting for that to come through four months later.

DD (now 11 years old) bum shuffled, and walked at 19 months. She was pretty steady after she got going. She only learned to crawl after she walked. Absolutely no issue, and DD2 walked at 14 months so it's a very individual thing . I know it's worrying when other babies seem to be walking so much earlier, but it's totally normal for bum shufflers to walk late, as they have learned how to get about upright very quickly and so have less need to walk.

Wormsarecool · 06/08/2021 21:21

Oh and a friends little one, didn’t walk till well after her second birthday, is now top of the class and very good at sport!

youaremysunshine2623 · 06/08/2021 21:22

Mine was a bum shuffler too and he tended to get to other milestones later than my second child who crawled/walked. I don’t know the data behind it though - just my experiences.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 06/08/2021 21:24

My DBro was a bum shuffler and was a late walker (over 2 yrs). He was later diagnosed as dyspraxic. He had lots of physio and other support throughout school. He's in his 30s now.

Mogtheanxiouscat · 06/08/2021 21:28

My DD never crawled. She bum shuffled then walked at 18m. However, she has now, 10 years later, been diagnosed with DCD( dyspraxia). It can be an early sign, so something to consider if you notice other co-ordination issues as they get older.

But my DD is prob the exception rather than the rule from above responses.

Ds1 was a bottom shuffler but he walked at 9m. Ds2 crawled and was 14m.

BeyondMyWits · 06/08/2021 21:31

My first Dd was a bum shuffler. She walked at 2 and 2 months. She never crawled. Her verbal and reasoning skills were fab, but she has never really been sporty. She has a weak ankle, the one she used to lean on most, so the HV saying it would make no difference was incorrect. Not sure we could have done anything differently though anyhow.

hiredandsqueak · 06/08/2021 21:32

My dd bum shuffled and was incredibly speedy. She was slower with all her physical milestones so she sat at eight months, rolled at twelve months, she never crawled. At eighteen months within the space of a week she stood up and walked. Within a month she was just as able as her cousin who had walked at 9 months. Dd was able to speak well long before she walked it was only the walking she lagged on.

Crossstitchismyhobby · 06/08/2021 21:34

6 kids-2 bum shuffled
One was 18/19 months
The other 2 1/2 years (he had problems with his knees)
You wouldn’t know he had issues now-he’s a real gym bunny

PostMenWithACat · 06/08/2021 21:36

DD never bum shuffled. Neither did she walk holding onto furniture. At about 16 months she spent two days learning to stand and then walked.

I suspect she is mildly dyspraxic. Cannot hit, throw, catch or dance and her handwriting was/is dire. At 17 she was diagnosed with ADHD.

She has just taken a first from a very well known Cambridge College and has a training contract with a legal firm so it hasn't held her back.

Taswama · 06/08/2021 21:39

Ds2 was a bottom shuffler. He walked at about 18 months. Bum shuffling is also linked to dyslexia, but as my DF and DB already have that I'm not sure if it would be a clear link.

MissisBee · 06/08/2021 21:39

My daughter's nearly 14 months and has been bottom shuffling since about Easter. Really fast! She's only really got the hang of pulling to stand in the last week or so. I'm not that worried about when she's going to walk (my son did at 17m after doing awkward crawling) but she's destroying the arse of all her clothes, so I'd quite like her to get a move on!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/08/2021 21:40

Walked at 13 months.
Shes 10yo now. Rather uncoordinated in many ways. Very messy handwriting for example. But other skills are advanced. (She rode a bike at 4yo for example, but trips over her own feet, can climb anything but walks into things...)

They are all individuals. But when they are 18 year olds no one is going to care when they walked...

Couldhavebeenme2 · 06/08/2021 21:41

Both mine were bum shufflers and both took their first steps at 20m. Literally within days of each other (3 years apart).
Hv told me it's less effort than crawling once they (finally) master sitting, and then so efficient that walking is too much of a struggle especially at playgroup with the polished hall floor

fufulina · 06/08/2021 21:43

DD1 was a bum shuffler. Never really crawled at all. Walked at about 14 months. Hit every milestone (I think!?!), and never had any issues. She just never really crawled.

MrsBungle · 06/08/2021 21:43

My dd was a bum shuffler. She never crawled. She’d use her hands to propel herself super fast! She was referred to the paed because she wouldn’t weight bear on her feet at all by around 16 months. The day before we saw the paed at 18 months she literally stood up and took 3 steps.

All other physical development was well within milestones.

fufulina · 06/08/2021 21:44

And she is what I’d consider a normal 12 year old now. Excellent football skills (so DH tells me), loves physical activity of all sorts.

namechangedyetagain · 06/08/2021 21:46

DS bottom shuffled and didn't walk until nearly 17 months. However by 18 months he was speaking in full sentences. He's now 13 and at grammar, doing really well. He's also learnt to walk, ride a bike, swim etc the usual childhood stuff. I wouldn't stress too much.

user1493494961 · 06/08/2021 21:47

A friend's child was a bottom shuffler and didn't walk until he was almost two but hit all other milestones.

DS bottom shuffled and eventually walked at 22ish months. He’s now five and reaching or exceeding all physical milestones.

Crazycrazylady · 06/08/2021 22:02

My now 8 year old bum shuffled till he was 19 months and was generally a bit slow on physically Milestones. Was coming down the stairs one leg at a time kind of thing. Now a super sporty 8 year old who is pretty excellent at most sports .🤷🏻
