Covid vaccine whilst breastfeeding

There is no right or wrong answer to this post I'm just curious... how many ladies have had the vaccine whilst breastfeeding? My baby is nearly 4 weeks old and I feel I'm been pressured now I'm not pregnant to receive the vaccine. I'm by no means anti-vax and if I wasn't breastfeeding I would have got it immediately but it just doesn't sit right with me knowing I wouldn't chose to give my children the vaccine but it would be passed through my breast milk to my son!

I'm breastfeeding my 16mo and got the vaccine when he was 10mo. No issues!

mayblossominapril · 02/08/2021 10:56

I was vaccinated whilst bf, first jab was fine, second jab baby (I think she was about 9 months) was a bit grumbly like she was after her 8 week jabs. I am hoping some immunity has passed from me to her as this year she has been quite ill with a chest infection and we only narrowly avoided hospital. Having been in hospital with small babies before I dont want to go again.

Pissinthepottyplease · 02/08/2021 11:48

I had my first dose (AZ) in April when my lo was 21 months. I choose to keep feeding until I had the second dose so she would get the antibodies.

The vaccine can’t pass through your breast milk but your antibodies do.

debbs77 · 02/08/2021 11:53

I haven't had it because it didn't feel right to.

We both had covid so have antibodies now anyway.

Zarene · 02/08/2021 11:55

There is a right answer - of course you have it.

(I had 2x Pfizer while BFing)

What makes you think it passes through breast milk? It doesn't.

graciesmammy · 02/08/2021 12:08

@Zarene please don't push your opinions on people because that's all that they are. Like I said in my original post there is no right or wrong answer but just to reply to your link here is a quote taken from tommys.org

It is important to be aware that there is no evidence to show that vaccine ingredients could pass to your baby through breast milk.
There is currently limited safety data for these specific vaccinations in breastfeeding. But there are many benefits to breastfeeding your baby, including protecting them against future infections. Therefore, women should be encouraged not to stop breastfeeding after vaccination

Somethingsnappy · 02/08/2021 13:36

I'm in a similar position OP. I haven't had the vaccine yet due to BF. I'm not personally too concerned about the safety aspect, but The Breastfeeding Network have shared that there have been some women who have reported anecdotally about a change in milk supply following the vaccine. From what I can gather, this does seem to be a minority though. But based on that, I decided to wait until my baby is well established on solids, so that a supply dip for a few days would be easier to navigate. That's just my personal approach though. I actually started a thread asking for the experience of others. The vast majority who posted said there had been no obvious changes x

I’m breastfeeding my now 9 month old and I’m double Pfizer jabbed.

When I recently went for the second jab, I was told there had been a big research study in the US with 90,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women which found it was safe, and actually beneficial from an antibodies perspective. I was going to have the jab anyway, but that’s always good information to hear.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 02/08/2021 14:26

Just to add, I had no side effects from the first jab but had a rough 48hrs after the second jab, but noticed absolutely no effects in my baby.

MindyStClaire · 02/08/2021 14:27

I had AZ when DD2 was about 8 and 11 months, I'm still breastfeeding her at 13 months now. I was just delighted she might get some antibodies through the milk.

Persipan · 02/08/2021 14:41

I had both doses of AZ.

BeansMeansBeans · 02/08/2021 14:45

I absolutely did not and would not. I'm young and fit and the risk of covid is so minimal. No point

saywhatwhatnow · 02/08/2021 14:52

I've had one jab whilst breastfeeding, and I currently have covid and am continuing to breastfeed. DS has had no side effects. He is 18 months and the pandemic has spurred me on to keep feeding him for longer than perhaps I would've. I want to at least give him antibodies and offer him
comfort in what is a tricky time for everyone.

Miliao · 02/08/2021 15:54

I think you may need to do a bit more research on how vaccines work as you have got the wrong idea judging by your comments.

SamanthaVimes · 02/08/2021 16:43

I’ve had both my Pfizer jabs. Still bfing my 1yo. I was hoping that the antibodies would help protect her. She caught it after I had my first jab but before my second and although she was a bit ill it was no worse than a normal cold. Obviously there’s no way to tell if it made a difference or not but hopefully it helped a bit!

BerthaYoung · 02/08/2021 22:26

Yep, had 2 x Moderna jabs when DD was 6 and 8 months. No adverse effects on milk supply or baby. I felt a bit off after the second but paracetamol helped and I was fine by the second day. I feel immensely lucky that here in the UK I have free access to the Covid vaccine, and I feel a responsibility to protect myself (and thereby the NHS) and others as far as I can.

Cloudyrainbows321 · 02/08/2021 22:38

@BeansMeansBeans that’s a very arrogant attitude. As an NHS worker aware that we are dealing with so many very poorly, young and otherwise healthy covid victims, I can tell you that you are wrong in your feelings that there is no point. Absolutely each to their own in terms of their feelings re taking the vax whisky BF (I did and absolutely no issues for me or baby) but to say there is no point because you don’t see yourself as at risk of covid is simply incorrect

Cloudyrainbows321 · 02/08/2021 22:40

*whilst, not whisky! Definitely don’t like that stuff 😊

greenmacaron · 02/08/2021 22:43

I had mine at the start of the year while BF my toddler. I’m very grateful to have had the chance so early, and will be happily having my booster if recommended too. I’m pregnant now, but the safety data is reassuring 🙂

Losttheequipment · 02/08/2021 22:47

You seem to have misunderstood that quote from Tommy’s.org.

DiscordandRhyme · 02/08/2021 22:50

I have.

Having second on Wednesday.

Exclusively BFing DS (5 months)

OatyBarKid · 02/08/2021 22:50

My DC was older, over 2 years, but he had no ill effects and made no comment on his milk being less or different. I don't know if that helps as he's much older, but he's the first to shout if things aren't how they should be in that area.

HelloViroids · 02/08/2021 23:06

I did, based on the report by the JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation) as reported here www.rcog.org.uk/en/news/updated-advice-on-covid-19-vaccination-in-pregnancy-and-women-who-are-breastfeeding/ Was concerned about my ability to look after DC if O got seriously ill.

OddshoesOddsocks · 02/08/2021 23:15

I had my second jab on Saturday (pfizer) and am bf my 14mo. I’ve noticed no dip in supply, side effects for her and hardly any for myself.

I thought long and hard about it and was grateful that I had longer to consider it what with being in a younger age bracket but I was assured by several professionals that it couldn’t be passed through milk as it is not a live vaccine and that only the resulting antibodies would be which is only a positive.

No need to be pressured OP, your body, your baby, your choice
